The long-rumored Call of Duty adaptation might be finally heading into production, as it is expected to begin shooting next Spring under the direction of Stefano Sollima. The Italian moviemaker and screenwriter is best known for his work on the popular Sky Atlantic crime series Gomorra and made his English language film debut with this year's action crime thriller Sicario: Day of the Soldado.

The Discussing Film crew recently had a chance to sit down and talk with screenwriter Kieran Fitzgerald (Snowden, Wormwood), who is penning Call of Duty's script. According to Fitzgerald, first casting meetings have already taken place and the movie's producers are currently in the process of picking up the casting members. The writer also revealed that the film is expected to begin shooting next Spring.

During the interview, Fitzgerald confirmed that Call of Duty is eyeing a 2020 or 2021 launch window. Activision Blizzard Studios’ presidents Stacey Sher and Nick van Dyk are set to produce the movie along with Activision Blizzard chief executive Bobby Kotick. Stefano Sollima's adaptation doesn't have a distributor yet, as the Call of Duty video game series has sold over 250 million copies worldwide.

This is gonna suck but they should adapt Mordern Warfare if they pick any single game at all. That story is classic and I don't think any campaign before or after came close to the quality level. That's debatable and some came close, but CoD 4 was something really special before it became an annual release and still holds up today.

This has been in the works forever. Good to finally hear some positive news about the project. What we really need is that long-rumored HALO film.

@L0RDbuckethead

We’re getting the next best thing for Halo. Showtime is making it into a series.

@regularmovieguy - Oh shit yeah I completely forgot about that. Looks like they should be starting production June 2019.

They should adapt the modern warfare trilogy or the first black ops. Ever since MW3 there haven’t been any top notch stories anymore. Or they just make it some mindless shooting stuff, like the multiplayer

@MalseMarcel - I actually thought black ops 2 was ok.

They’re like 10 years too late but sure. If it’s as balls to the wall action as the campaigns it’s could be a fun guilty pleasure. This is the one series I actually think Michael Bay would be perfect for

Crazy idea. Make a movie with Viktor Reznov and Mason in prison (played by gary oldman and sam worthington) have scenes from the game and the climax being the prison break. Make it all emotional.

@LawyerCipher - the characters where really good in those games and could work based loosely on the games. I do want a scene in the snow where they have to sneak without being spotted and crawling under tanks and stuff.

Fallout please someone adapt fallout. I think it would be great on amc to replace TWD

@Grodd87 - dont know about that. They're really into saving money with these shows, to the point that they tried to have zombies heard and not seen to save money on make up and limiting the amount of outside shots. It worked fine for walking dead but you cant have the fallout environments without spending some serious money.

I enjoyed Tomb Raider but still feel waiting for the definitive Video Game film. Hopefully we get that with the Metal Gear movie.
