TOMB RAIDER: Lara Croft Is Ready To Embrace Her Destiny In This Action-Packed New Trailer

The new trailer for Tomb Raider has been released and it's clear now that the movie is going to take a deep dive into the origin story of Lara Croft. The question is, is she ready to embrace her destiny?

Assassin's Creed and Warcraft were supposed to put the video game movie genre on the right back but both movies ended up being critical and commercial disappointments. Now, all eyes are on Tomb Raider to make things right and if this trailer is any indication, it stands a very good chance of doing so!

There's plenty of great action on display here and we get an even closer look at how the movie is going to handle Lara Croft's origin story, a tale fans of the video game series will be all too familiar with.

Warner Bros. has clearly stuck closely to those but it does look like there will be some big twists and if all goes right, the Alicia Vikander led movie should help launch a new franchise. Directed by The Wave’s Roar Uthaug, the movie also stars Walter Goggins (The Hateful Eight), Dominic West (The Affair), Daniel Wu (Warcraft) and Hannah John-Kamen (Ready Player One). What do you think of the trailer?

@knocturnalzen10 - don’t know how they screwed this up but this looks horrible .. the game was critically acclaimed .. we haven’t seen a horror survival island type of film since hunger games and people ate that up.. the red carpet was laid out clearly from them... and they still screwed it up by making it about her father YET again, appealing to feminist , going lighter and being so cheesy... they should’ve just copied the game and went dark and bloody and scary and gave the characters more development and tweaked it . It would’ve been a gold mine for cinema

"the game was critically acclaimed"

The last two games were amazing.

"YET again, appealing to feminist , going lighter and being so cheesy... "

Okay now you've lost me.

Light and cheesy feminisim? People getting shot with arrows, guns, and axed in the heart is going soft?

Let's be clear, we don't know how violent the film will be but they can't show graphic violence in a standard trailer. This isn't going to be a Tarantino film, that's clear and you'd be a fool to expect that, but that trailer definitely doesn't make the film look like it's a G-rated romp at all.

Trying to stretch this into a "feminist issue" is just plain ridiculous. Lara Craft is a woman, always has been, and this depiction of her isn't any different from the game. If you want to criticize elements you wish were there, that's fine, but quit turning everything into "girls ruined my childhood" it's embarrassing for others who also value those same things.

The best elements of the Tomb Raider game series were never about how awesome someone's head exploded or body was torn apart.

It was much bigger than basic violence porn.

@Humperdink - The best elements of the last two games were the grit and darkness that everyone loved.. if it hadn’t been for those games tomb raider would have never been revamped ... no one said anything about heads being blown off.. your letting
your mind take you somewhere I didn’t even think of going.

And they are appealing to feminist it was clearly there just by using that song and using the whole she’s the only one whose smart enough and can save the world plot line AGAIN! and yet again your trying to sound smart ( which you don’t btw) by going somewhere I didn’t think of going. I loved Wonder Woman .. Hell I’m
Even looking forward to captain marvel..

If I wanted basic violence porn I would watch Rob zombies movies.. have you even played the games? If you had you would understand where me and the others are getting at . The game was more then violence .. it resparked interest in a dying iconic hero.. it was grit, real, and about survival, dark.. and there were losses and a sad but happy ending at the ending the fact she became who her father was though she didn’t want to be at the beginning, exploring and searching for what he gave his whole life to instead of her.

This is not about that anything you just said. Just me voicing my opinion by stating that the movie lacks what made the game so good and no video game movie has yet broke the “curse” many were hoping it would be this one and it doesn’t look like it will ... they don’t have to show violence in the trailer.. we should be able to see the tone from the trailers ... & that’s what red bands trailers are for.. every R rated movie
has one. This is clearly gonna be pg-13 ..

I respect your view, and you should respect mines.

Thanks

No, not everyone loved the changes.
As I recall many complained about the "less sexualized" Lara redesign and argued that feminism (there's that dreaded word again!) had ruined the character and games. You must have seen all of that, right?

I personally loved the dark gritty reboot but that game wasn't created in a vacuum it came with a history. The original game was a major success, having sold 7 million copies worldwide and it wasn't nearly as dark and gritty as the reboot. It's on the list of the best video games ever made.

The new reboot games were successful on the backs of the previous games. Don't forget that.

People didn't play the original games for darkness and grit they played it for the action, puzzle solving, mystery, plotting and adventure. I don't know your age, but I notice a lot of the next-gen gamers seem to think that darkness and grit means depth and it doesn't. If used right it can (The Dark Knight) but it's not guaranteed to work (Batman V Superman) on it's own.

What worked for Tomb Raider were the elements I mentioned. Removed the superficial darkness and grit and the games would still shine.

"And they are appealing to feminist it was clearly there just by using that song and using the whole she’s the only one whose smart enough and can save the world plot line AGAIN!"

Here you contradict yourself. You declare that you want a survival horror film but complain when it uses a song entitled "Survivor" which has a chorus that fits the tone of not only the trailer but the 2013 reboot.

If you've played ANY of the previous games you'll know that it's never been a secret that Lara...wait for it...HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE SMART ONE THAT SAVES THE WORLD...like in every game she stops secret cabals and supernatural forces. How on earth is that appealing to feminism when the games were embraced and beloved by millions of male gamers too?

I respect you're views, even if they feel a bit biased, unusually gender-focused and slightly melodramatic.

Just relax.
We don't need to complain about everything.

Thanks.

Sometimes, you feel like you've just been drug through the mud. For Lara Croft, that's an every day kind of feeling.

That wasn't bad! But the parts where she fell into the water clutching her backpack, and then she swung on the vine looked really, really dumb.

@Christuffer - Agreed. And it looked really fake in those scenes

@HeavyMetal4Life - Very fake indeed. And that's the opposite of what this movie needs to succeed and stand apart.

I am in love with Alicia Vikander so I will definitly see that movie. But I regret they don't go full Rated R and make a really intense and visceral movie :/

So that didn't look completely terrible. Looks pretty decent actually. Could be good. The guy playing the villain looks like he's phoning it in though

@BlindWedjat - It was certainly many times better than the first trailer. They should have released this instead of that one.
