Speaking with Badass Digest, director Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), said that he would love to direct Warcraf, a film based on the popular video game franchise World of Warcraft. Altough we all know that Sam Raimi is attached to that project for a long time now, he is currently working on the Wizard of Oz prequel, and it is unknown when will he start working on Warcraft.

So, here are some of Jones' thoughts about the World Of Warcraft and video games in general:

"I definitely think there is an intangible aspect of video games in the interactivity that a film is never going to capture. But that is not what a game adaptation needs to be. A good game adaptation is where you find the story or the emotional aspect that’s at the heart of a computer game and you replicate that on film. It doesn’t mean you need to have first person perspective or try and capture the mechanics of a game. If you’re going to make a film of a game it’s got to be about the essence of why you, the audience, care what’s going on. There are certain games where that will work, and there are certain games where it doesn’t."

"I'm hugely jealous of Sam Raimi...I really believe World of Warcraft could be the launch of computer games as good films. And from the little I've read of interviews with him the way he's approaching it makes so much sense. It's what I was talking about – it's not worrying about how the game plays, it's about creating the world of the game and investing the audience in that world."

So, it looks like he really is passioniate about the whole project. What do you think? Is he a better choice for this adaptation?

Never played the game I'd rather see WARHAMMER 40 000 done (LOTRS/STAR WARS).

...But if this could be as good as LOTRS I'm all for it!

I don't really know anything about WOW, but looking at some of the gmae cinematics, I think I'd be on board for a live action movie.

I think this could work as a CGI/animated movie trilogy or Saga (each episode as two hour length)? Made like those trailers!:)... That would be cool! Just needs a great actors as the voices!

Airkalel in the Garithos realm

I've taken a break from playing, it's been a month but before the expansion I was in the top 10 warriors in that realm

I would go for another epic 3-hour trilogy like Lord of the Rings.

I used to play on a fairly regular basis. Have several 80's, a couple 85's. It's all very Tolkienesque. Two warring sides, each comprised of uneasy alliances. Except no side is really evil or good, they all have their own motives. There's tons of different stories, most very deep and sprawling. If they ever get around to making a movie, the fact that it's a game shouldn't even enter into the equation. Sam Raimi, is directing, but it's way down on his to do list. He's not the right man to be directing it anyway imo.

how are they going to do this. There are hundreds of hours of game play in this game and you want to turn that into a movie.

I loooooove Warcraft! I've been a rabid fan of the franchise since the 2nd game (when the franchise was RTS). I've played WoW for over 5 years now (just hit 85 with my main, Nelf Combat Rogue last night). This movie CAN be soooo epic if done right and the choose the right place in the lore to pick up on. If they want to portray the horde in a positive light, why will have to start around the 3rd War, otherwise they could go back to Medivh opening the Dark Portal in Black Morass. I cannot express how much GREAT lore this game has. I dearly hope they at least turn it into a trilogy. I could go on forever about how awesome this film can be.

For those of you curious about WoW lore but haven't played it, check out the WoW comic series.
