SPIDER-MAN 3 Star Tom Holland Describes UNCHARTED As A Prequel To Naughty Dog's Video Game Series

It was previously thought that Uncharted would serve as a standalone franchise separate to the games, but in a new interview, star Tom Holland describes it as a prequel to Naughty Dog's four hit titles...

The next couple of years look set to be huge for Tom Holland; he has Cherry, Chaos Walking, Spider-Man 3, and Uncharted on the way, and the latter has generated a lot of attention online.

Many fans of Naughty Dog's hit franchise are disappointed that Sony Pictures is telling the story of a young Nathan Drake, but it seems there may be a good reason for that. In a recent interview with Total Film, Holland indicated that the movie is going to serve as a prequel to those beloved games.

"Uncharted is a film I finished last year," Holland said, reflecting on a busy few months. "It's Mark Wahlberg and myself. It's a prequel to the Naughty Dog game series, Uncharted. I play Nathan Drake. Ruben Fleischer is our director, and he did an amazing job. I'm really chuffed with it. It's fun, it's funny, it's epic. It's going to be really entertaining. The action sequences are some of the coolest sequences that I've ever done. So I'm super-excited about that."

The Uncharted games did a pretty good job of exploring Nate's youth, though there are definitely still some gaps that could be filled in. With that in mind, it's likely this movie is going to address some of those, while fitting into the timeline established by the games. That should be welcomed by fans, as it's clearly not going to put a completely different spin on the character.

Unfortunately, Uncharted was recently delayed, and is now heading our way on February 11th, 2022.

Not saying the movie is going to be terrible or anything (then again, I have no love for the original games, so I might not ultimately be the right person to say one way or another) and I know studios are very strick on what actors are allowed to say publically, but all of this is as basic and generic pre-release commercial talk as you can get.

Starting to get tired of Tom Holland.

@Battabing - For my part, I like Tom Holland well enough, just not as Peter Parker (mainly because of the way the character is written, Holland is not really at fault here). He seems like a nice person and he did some great performances outside of Spider-man so I'm really looking forward to his interpretation of Nathan Drake.

The sad thing is that I really think Holland could have been a great Peter Parker if the MCU incarnation was closer to the original characterization of the character.

While I'm in no way happy that they're going to prequel route instead of getting Nathan Fillion and making a present day set picture I do think that this is the best cast they could have assembled for this type of project.
Young actors usually tend to be divide, meanwhile Tom Holland has this natural likability that elevates him above other picks. Imagine one of the Stranger Things kids having gotten the role, certainly would have been more divisive.
Also Wahlberg is a solid choice as a younger Sully.
So overall: not the project I wanted to happen for this franchise but for what type of movie this will be they acquired the right gears to make it work.

When it ends up being a success I could see more adaptions from Sony games coming our way. The cross-promotion is just too sweet. Remember when the Mortal Kombat movies came out? Back then the popularity of the games also exploded and had copies sell through the roof. Also part of the reason the Resident Evil movies continued for as long as they did despite having little plot ties to the games.

Films and games have great synergy, cheap tie-in games ruined the push a little but I could see that concept work in a properly executed manner

Definitely not who I would picture as Drake, but it could be a fun watch given the source material.

Unnecessary film. The games are already epic stories with phenomenal gameplay and character development, except when they blow the ending (looking at you Uncharted 3) and decide that the supernatural is no longer cool even though it was the most exciting part of the first two installments (looking at you Uncharted 4) because Naughty Dog focused waaaaaaay too much on the multiplayer (which was also phenomenal).

Anyway, just make more games.
