Beyonce Begs for Wonder Woman Role

Beyonce Begs for Wonder Woman Role

It's true. Pop diva Beyonce Knowles wants to be Wonder Woman, and is meeting with DC Comics and Warner Bros to express her interest.

Source: LA Times

Beyonce's film credits include Dreamgirls and The Pink Panther
and now she wants a comic book movie credit.

"I want to do a superhero movie and what would be better than Wonder Woman?" she told the Los Angeles Times.

"And it would be a very bold choice. A black Wonder Woman would be a powerful thing. It's time for that, right?"

She will soon be seen playing singer Etta James on the big screen in Cadillac Records, and has a major role in the thriller Obsessed.

"After doing these roles that were so emotional I was thinking to myself: 'OK, I need to be a superhero,'" Beyonce said.

"Although, when you think about the psychology of the heroes in the films these days, they are still a lot of work, of course, and emotional. But there's also an action element that I would enjoy."

I think it has less to do with race (wonder woman is amazonian..not white OR black) and more to do with beyonce herself.. an absolute TERRIBLE choice.. shouldn't be allowed to bring back down the credibility of comicbook movies

I second 85!

It has nothing to do with race. The script and the character was Catwoman's actuall problem. Nothing else. It would have been the same problem with "The Grayson's" series. You can be they're biggest fan in the world, it still won't fly with the overall general audience. You can't make a bigscreen movie or a whole tv series with just a supporting character. Let's face it, would you go see a Jimmy Olsen movie? And like i said before, that is the ultimate problem with Hulk. The main character(Hulk) also passes as a supporting character(Bruce). Too much of a strech. Thank god the last one did okay, i just can't see the same success for the follow up. And i greatly fear that Thor will be affected in the same way.

As for main character race changes...iiissshhh. I dunno. Supporting character's races aren't very important but a main character... it's iffy. How would a black Superman fair? And i'm not talking about Steel, he's just supporting.

Beyonce is a lovely woman ~ however WW (Wonder Woman) is supposed to be around 5'11"-6' tall, Beyonce is 5'6", plus WW comes from a Greek heritage, the Mediterranean, and Beyonce just does not have that look. Lastly WW needs to have some muscle definition as she is a very physical character. Beyonce looks more like a fashion model than fitness model. Perhaps she can play Storm in a new X-Men movie, or Misty Knight in an Iron Fist, Luke Cage or Heroes For Hire movie, XS in a Legion of Super-Heroes movie ~ etc! Of course if she had the height and physique maybe she could play Artemis, Diana's replacement, as she is not from a direct Greek heritage. As for Fearless' derogatory statement ~ I dislike what he said, but respect his right to say it, however hateful it was. True Catwoman was not played by a Caucasian actress, but then that was not really Catwoman either, so race was not the issue in that movie ~ the story was the problem in Catwoman, not that Catwoman was played by the gorgeous Halle Berry.

THOUGH I BELIEVE BEYONCE IS INCREDIBLY SEXY BEAUTIFUL, WONDERWOMAN IS AS SACRED AS BATMAN AND SUPERMAN, ITS AN ICONIC CHARACTER. MAKING WONDERWOMAN AN AFRO AMERICAN CHARACTER IS LIKE YOU TRYING TO MAKE SUPERMAN BLACK OR BATMAN BLACK, NOT BEING RACIST, BUT IT NOT SOMETHING PEOPLE WOULD GO FOR. GRANTED NICK FURY,SAM JACKSON IS COOL, BUT ITS BECAUSE THE SPIRIT OF THE CHARACTER,THE HOOTSPA,THE BAD ASS OF NICK FURY COMPLIMENTS SAM JACK..PEOPLE NOW ARE REVED UP BECAUSE THE PRESIDENTS A BLACK MAN, THAT MEANS MAKE EVERYTHING A RACE THING..I BELIEVE OBAMA AS A MAN, A HUMAN BEING,AND WHO HE IS AND REPRESENTS AS A SOUL WITH A DRIVE AND PLAN AND IDEAS FOR AMERICA IS WHAT GOT HIM ELECTED, HECK I VOTED FOR HIM, IT WAS NEVER ABOUT RACE..ITS WHAT AMERICA NEEDS, BUT WONDERWOMAN A DIFFERENT RACE, MOST PEOPLE HAVE AN IDEA OF WONDERWOMAN..HECK MAYBE PEOPLE SHOULD VOTE..

I think they should just keep race to their comic book counterparts. I don't want a black person playing a white person just cuz they want to, no offense. They should stick with a white woman for Wonder Woman and I think it's silly choosing Will Smith as Captain America. I don't think it could work. I'm not racist or anything but it's as if someone decided to make a Spiderman film and getting an arabian actor to play Peter Parker...I don't think it would look right...*hides*

Also when it comes to Samuel L. Jackson playing Nick Fury, there's Ultimate Nick Fury who is black and is actually based on Sam Jackson (by appearance). So that's acceptable...

G-T-F-O. So angry that statement has me. I'm a proud voter for Obama, but this woman is just trying to milk in on his success. Besides, she can't even act. I'm so tired of singers transitioning into acting cause most of the time (and this is one) it just does not work.

Nobody here is racist for not wanting her to play Wonder Woman. Fact is, nobody wants to see a pop singer leading a huge comic book movie.

She is incredibly beautiful... but will someone please tell this crazy woman she IS not gonna be Wonder Woman. Whats wrong with all the actual dark skinned super heroes? No one wants to be Vixen, Monica Rambeau (honestly pls dont give her a movie, love captain marvels... just not that one...) or even Misty knight? "Oh, what? those characters aren't enough for a high paid actress?" ... then please step aside and let someone who wouldnt need a skin pigmentation change and a hair dying. :P

This is sad. Many of you claim that race has nothing to do with your objection to with changing these characters, yet if race didnt matter to you than why would you care in the first place? Sure you may not be confederate flag waving, gun totting bigots (well except that piece of garbage Fearless), yet showing such vehemence at the idea of changing something so trivial as a characters race does seem a bit racist. What matters is if the actor can pull the character off.

The truth is that the vast majority of characters in both the DC and Marvel universes are white. The few actual non white characters tend to be walking stereotypes, or fill up the 'token' slot on superhero teams. This puts minorities at a big disadvantage in comic books. I grew up in Asian, latino, and black communities, and the one thing I found is that just about every youth read comic books, regardless of race, but these young people did not have many characters that looked like them. Yet, they didn't care. They liked wolverine or spiderman because they were cool characters, not because of their race.

Beyond all that, as Spiderman 1985 pointed out, Wonder Woman is amazonian, not white or black, so the whole point is moot. Wouldn't it make sense to cast someone with exotic features (such as Beyonce) to play someone who comes from a mysterious land such as Amazonia? If you dont want her to play WW due to her supposed lack of acting credientials, thats fine (though I dont see her as any worse than, say, Linda Carter or Megan Gale), just dont make it about race, cause you cant do it without sounding racist.

As with other coments, I agree that Beyonce would be a horrible choice for WW because she's a horrible actress. Like Shadowelfz, i agree that for WW race doens't really matter as long as they get a good script & someone who fits the part THAT CAN ACT!!!! However, there's a great fan made pic of Megan Fox as WW at wonder-who.com

i'm a little mixed on one. race might be an issue to some but i'm not going to write her off for that reason. i would hope that with ALOT of coaching and training she'd be able to develop her acting presence and pull it off and actually prove to all the naysayers that she has the chops for it (i often root for the underdog). that being said, i almost think that Beyonce is too sweet to take on a serious role that deals with sacrifice, tragedy, conflict, etc. there is responsibility that comes with a superhero role that at the present time i don't think she's ready for yet; not responsibility to be an accurate depiction of the original visual design, but an accountabiility as an actor to portray to the audience the complex emotional state of the hero. there are the heroes in the thick of it all treating the sick and wounded, digging the wells, handing out the rations and fighting off the occasional war god, and then there are the people on the telethons who want to help and make a change but don't want to have to answer the tough questions or get their hands dirty. so could it work: possibly, if she can reach a place within herself where that first hero waits for her time to fly that invisible jet.

that being said i definitely wouldn't mind seeing her in that suit.

Nick Fury a orginally a white character, later change to black in the ultmate series, which I must admit I like the character more. I'm a American who is black, I'm a fan of Wonder Woman and Catwoman. Beyonce as Wonder Woman will no work for me at all, even if it was another Black actress wanting play her. Wonder Woman is for character who is born on a island from Greek mythogy. Catwoman shouldn't have change to black neither, even though they have done it for old tv series.

I sort of get why one would get turned off by changing something about the character. Because it messes with the original content. The character's race, their costume, hair color or even the way the sound can throw a fan for a loop. When a fan is hardcore about a character it's not just about one thing but rather the amalgamation of everything the character is. Changing anything will have a jarring effect to any hardcore fan. Changing something like the color of their skin may be trivial to you, but not to them. It's a valuable piece of the character's make-up. I don't think its racisim for them to be against it, nor should they feel pressured into being PC (politically-correct) about it either. It's about poking holes into something they love.
They may not be very diplomatic about expressing it, but some one you need to get over yourselves and try seeing it in a different way without having your delicate sensibilities getting in the way of understanding it. The "I'll only accept disagreement of the idea if it's only based on her acting" is just as bullying. Get over yourself. It's not about offending you.

That said, I'm not down with Beyonce for Wonder Women. I sort of liked the casting they had for her part (Megan Gale) in The Justice League movie that went belly up. Why not bring her in for a feature film?

Lastly, someone complained about Beyonce not being able to act, then offered up Megan Fox as an idea... ha-ha-ha.

I think that while we talk about how race doesn't matter us, we show innerly how it sadly matters on our own. And it's bad...
If race doesn't really matter then WW must be blue eyes, black hair and white skin, only because WW is -let's keep, preferentially, all the original forms (because they were created by the original ones-).
And I am a mediterranean brown hair and brown eyes born in España and living in Madrid (Spain/Europe) -a righty one, here, by the way, which means for you one as near to your Dems. as to your Reps-.
So: ¿must we change, from now on, everything done only because that unsubstantial mood called 'change' obligates us to do?
Our world are really damnably insane, and it is damnable sad.

But, anyway, in the same way ment before, if Beyonce is good for DC then she'll good for them -truism here-. But, in the same way ment before, Wonder Woman should be taken firstly from the original creation (which means a grecoroman one -http://www.comicbookreligion.com/char?ID=3314&Wonder_Woman_(Diana_of_Themyscira)-). So...

And let's try truely to do not create artificial wars; we just firstly know/remember who we are.
Choose 'The Right Way'; we were born in the eternal Greece's where born concepts of the freedom and the individualism, brothers ordered by the best of the Roman empire and sons of the christianity which inseminated that empire.

Refute my deepness if you want (and forgive my possible grammatical errors using english language, please), but, please, forget all those artificial wars which just only divide us in order to give forces to the Mad.

God bless all of us; sure It is wanting to bless all of us.

Take a greet (and be welcome);
Thanks.

shadowfeltz i see your point but i think a fan wanting his/her hero cast as they are on the page is all thats going on here. i would say the race of the character is not a trivial thing at all. imagine they had cast , say, will smith as batman? do you think that would have been ok?

I have always noticed Beyonce would be perfect .... as STORM! The character has a lot of potential and is very powerful (if I memory serves me right she is even revered as a God and was once a respected leader of X-men.) In fact during the Marvel-DC face-off Wonder Woman (DC) was pitted against Storm (Marvel)! Too bad for Halle Berry the X-man movies did not give much emphasize on this.

As for Wonder Woman she is always portrayed as an Amazon ergo Greek. Perhaps even as legendary South American amazon therefore native american or Latino.

The image and history of Wonder Woman is already too much well established. However I believe there are other legendary female superheroes who deserves to be shown in the big screen. I believe with the right production crew and a decent script Beyonce can establish herself as a superhero.

I am an african american and although I find some of your comments quite offensive, I too don't want to see Beyonce as Wonder Woman. I love Beyonce, but you're right Wonder Woman is Mediterranean, at best she could be played by a latina as she was in the 80s (Lynda Carter is of hispanic descent). If you made Wonder Woman black, you would also have to make Hippolyta black (wow, just went back and read some more comments, God, hate much?)

Taking a few steps back, putting my emotions asside and assessing the situation, I can see everyone's point of view…yes even fearless. But hate should never be the way to go and that goes for any race. White people should stop being racist and black people should stop being so quick to put every white person in the same racist boat. For that is also racism and just fuels the fire.

I'm a white canadian and I recently had to deal hands on with the issue of our fore-fathers and religion having abused the native american population. All though different, it is as worse as the african american slavery. But are we the great great grand children of an old mentality to blame for this? No. We were never there to commit the crime and if we were there, we were nothing but innocent children being fed our parents's ideals. How many times will we have to appologise for what happened in the last century? The answer is we should never have to. For racism to stop, all we need to do is to accept that what was done is done and can never be undone but we can make sure it doesn't ever happen again. Acceptance is the only way. Of ourselves and of history no matter how horrible it was.

As for comicbook characters, the general public will never understand that to us hard core comicbook fans, these characters are almost living breathing pieces of ourselves and have been since we were old enough to look at the pictures before we could even read the words in the comicbooks. Should we have to change pieces of our selves to please a now politically correct society? Better yet, would you change the color of your skin to please your neighbour? Should you have to change your children's skin color or your parents's just because times are a changin'? The answer to that is never in a million years. Saying that we should change already established characteristics of our beloved childhood superheroes just because society is ready for it now… is not what I call acceptance. It's being labeled a "racist" if we dissagree. It's an imposition created by fear. It's down right racism mixed with reverse psychology.

I understand the african ameraican point of view that there aren't many black superheroes. But there are good ones such as Steel, Green Lantern and War Machine. Even though I already know what you're thinking, that they're just supporting role characters, how do we fix that problem? Should we have to change our already well established superheroes's characteristics? No. We create new great main role super heroes such as Black Panther, Spawn, Static X and Blade. Even though they might not have an as long history behind them, that's a tiny fact that we all have to accept. Why should we, the hard core comicbook fans, have to pay because our childhood superheroes were created in a more racist society then our actuall one? The answer is we shouldn't. No one should pay for mistakes done by others. Black people should be proud of the fact that they were able to see on the big screen Spawn as well as three Blade movies before anyone even thought of making a Captain America movie to put on the big screen! That is HUGE!!! The one that was made was only a C movie. They should celebrate that instead of focussing all they're energy to make people change they're historical pillars. Acceptance from all will be our only hope of uniting as one single human race. The change has to be done by each and everyone for it to matter.

I guess its my turn now. This may sound a little racist, but you know I don't care who you are what color or religion everyone is racist in some way, so take this with a grain of salt. First to say rasicm is an issue, is bull, the past election was at the least majorily a race issue. I will say that I voted for Mccain because I agreed more with his politics then Obama's. But when Obama was elected what was it being shown on the television? People screaming and yelling we have a BLACK PRESIDENT! I have in the past voted for candidates for offices that were of a different Race then I.

Now on to the issue at hand. We have to stop changing existing characters to appease people. Where is the most of the money made from this movie going to come from? The comic book fans, appease them, to be honest they are the ones that care and will notice change that are made, not the average movie goer. Because most superheroes are white, when their is a comlpaint when they want to change a race of a character it makes white people look racist. But what if it was a known black hero, and they wanted him to be white white? the out cries against it would be evne more. Black activist who would normaly not even think twice about changing the race of a super hero would be all over the television saying that we were taking away from black scoiety the chance to have a black character to look up too. I agree with, I believe it was Shamen, instead of trying to fight to make these changes fight for the creation of more new heroes that are of different ethnicities.

And for Fearless, there are is a difference, I beleive with Chris Rock when he says they're to types of Blacks, there are black people and there are Niggers, and you know what every race has them, the whites have them - you are our example -, the hispanics, etc. Every race has people that make them look bad.

Guys… I get your point. She "begged" for the role saying "it's time for that now". Which just shows to us that she is not a comicbook fan therefore she cannot possibly understand. Even though you do have the right to hate her music and to have an opinion about her skin color or anything else for that matter, the hate that you attach to your opinions will only hurt yourselves in the end. Why would you hate her for wanting the same thing that we all dream about which is to star as a super hero on the big screen? Deep down we all want that for our selves and we can't blame her to use her stardom to try and realise her dream. I think we'd all do the same in her place. Mabey if she read this thread, she'd probably better understand the issue at hand. I'm pretty sure she had no idea of the uproar she would cause with her actions in regards to the fans. The same could be said for Cher wanting the Catwoman role. Whether it's a rumour or not, deep down I'm sure she'd jump on the offer to still be concidered a sex simbol at her age.

Thanks Talonn2001 for the support. I'll atest that Chris Rock hit a bull's eye dead on with that one. And as for the president, it's normal for all the hype to happen but it will die down in a few weeks where people will put that aside and focus more on what he will do to fill that position. It is a job after all and his actions in the next 4 years will determine if americans were right to choose him. In regards to his politics, it's not a bad start if he retrieve's the soliders out of there. Oil is simply not worth dying for.
