Five out of 10 Mandates For a Kick-Ass Wonder Woman TV Show

Wired.com has presented a list of 10 mandates to make sure that David Kelley's Wonder Woman is a kick-ass television series. We're presenting five of those mandates.

10. Make her a serious badass. Wonder Woman is a “feminine character with all the strength of Superman plus all the allure of a good and beautiful woman,” said the character’s creator, William Moulton Marston. In other words, she’s not Ally McBeal or even Lynda Carter, who complained of being labeled a sex object when she starred in the popular ’70s Wonder Woman TV series. Neither predecessor is going to cut it when crafting a next-gen Amazon goddess.

9. Make her eternal. Above all else, Wonder Woman is an immortal, not a puny human. Giving her a day job as a corporate executive who moonlights as a vigilante, as Kelley proposes, could be part of the picture. But if it’s the whole picture, we’re looking at a comics fiasco on the level of the late ’60s Wonder Woman, who was stripped of her powers and turned into a mod with a boutique shop.

8. Create serious supervillains from the fringes of science and time. Actress Lynda Carter fought street punks and military enemies in the ’70s version of Wonder Woman. But the 21st century’s Wonder Woman needs a more ambitious, challenging workout. She shouldn’t be fighting flaccid wannabes who are doing time as god fodder.

7. Don’t pick a short, scrawny actress. Whoever plays Wonder Woman must be built like a warrior, but still hot enough to ensnare drooling fanboys, who can’t abide a female superhero who isn’t a sex object. Think Xena plus Alias, and you’re partly there. As Gina Torres, who starred in Firefly and Alias, infamously explained, “There are no skinny bitches in superhero land.” (Torres would be great for the role, by the way.)

6. Don’t skimp on the action. Whoever plays Wonder Woman should possess serious martial arts skills or be able to learn them. Wonder Woman is a pit fighter as well as a divine power, so the actress playing her should be able to sell the on-screen brawls. Check director Lauren Montgomery’s kick-ass action in Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and the animated Wonder Woman film for further instruction.

Unfortunately everything u said is right lol. It would fail on tv and even in the movies. They should avoid it, it'll end like that birds of prey crap... after 13 episodes.

If her secret identity was something like an FBI agent (like she is in the comics) it could work. This show can go wrong in so many ways!

If wonderwoman is wearing a bra and hotpants, fighting crime, the show wont work.

it will just look like some soft porn imo.

Taylor Cole for my boner...oh,I mean for the role.HaHa.I think Taylor would be perfect for it.I just don't know about the direction they are going with the show though.I think NBC is single handedly trying to destroy all superhero & sci-fi shows because they don't like them.I think it's there goal too.For what reason,I don't know.Knight Rider,Bionic Woman,Persons Unknown,Heroes & Surface, are just some examples. And ABC & FOX are in on it too.

You need a fine ass, hot, sexy, built, athletic, busty, classy gal to play Wonder Woman. Thats why I choose GINA CARANO. A former American Gladiator, current MMA/muay thai fighter.

aztony@ She may be tough, but WW needs to have a sharp features and a hot look and Gina's nose just doesn't do it. Don't know if she has been punched a few times or not. She's okay-looking, but not what I picture WW looking like.

"pit fights? street brawls? if you want that shit. campaign for a black connary show.
wonderwoman needs to be fighting super powered beings."

Isn't that what they addressed in #8?

Good call Ed. I agree with everything you put out there (that almost never happens with anyone). The WW thing can work if it's done well. And yes..... LOSE THE DAMN INVISIBLE AIRPLANE!!!
davidcub
davidcub - 1/25/2011, 10:23 PM
What worries me is that the premise of the show is that she's a corporate executive/vigilante superhero! That is almost the exact opposite of WW if you ask me. How many corporate executives do you know who are preachers of peace and equality for all human beings? People say a female character can't work. Xena had quite a few seasons. WW is probably just as popular with non-comics readers. Everyone knows who she is. There's plenty material there. She could be battling the Minotaur and a Hydra one episode and meeting Myndi Mayer in Boston the next! If they used the supporting cast from George Perez' run they would be set. He did such a great job developing all the characters, especially Diana. She's MY favorite character, and it's going to totally kill me to see her giving marketing presentations and skulking in alleyways at night. I know there aren't any details but it looks like that's where they are going. [frick]ing sucks. This is how she should look.....

I finally watched Crisis on Two Earths tonight and I love how they did the invisible plane. If they do something clever like in the movie I would be OK with the plane. Obviously there is no reason for her to use it regularly, but it could still be present without being a show killer.

Don't know about her acting, but Megan Gale has the perfect look. The more I think about that George Miller Justice League movie, the sadder I get that it didn't end up happening.

Especially after seeing Armie Hammer in The Social Network, basically playing alternate-history Bruce Wayne (living parents) x2!

Still, my favorite representation of WW is from Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier. A real Amazon warrior (and taller than Superman!).

I love Cooke's retro but tougher take on the character!

If I could freakin figure out how to post pics on here, I'd show you how Gina Carano is the best choice for WW. She can act, definintely well enough for an NBC show, and looks like an Amazon princess. She'd be perfect for the role.

a whole lot of people could play Wonder Woman. As long as she can act, that's the key to success or failure. She should be Fine as hell, long dark hair, legs all the way down to the ground (wait for it...) and bam, you've nailed it.
