Warner Bros. Executives Convinced Wonder Woman Couldn't Work on Film?

DC Comics writer Grant Morrison suggests that there isn't anything wrong with Wonder Woman -- but with executives who have 'just convinced themselves' that she could never work onscreen.

Graeme McMillan at The Hollywood Reporter reports,

"It's not the best time to be a Wonder Woman fan. Not only has the character been continually passed over when it comes to a big-screen debut -- with the news that 2015 will bring a Superman/Batman clash instead of the anticipated Justice League movie that would, presumably, have featured her prominently -- but now it turns out that Amazon, The CW series that would retell her origins, Smallville-style, has been put on pause indefinitely. Is Wonder Woman just cursed when it comes to breaking out from the comic medium?"

He continues:

"Grant Morrison, whose résumé at DC Comics has included runs on Batman, All-Star Superman and JLA, believes that the problem is less a curse and more a matter of misguided conventional wisdom. Talking to USA Today, the Scottish writer said that people "have just convinced themselves" that Wonder Woman is particularly difficult to bring to live-action life.

"There are certain attitudes that have been around for a while, and I think people just don't question them anymore, and things like Wonder Woman always fall prey to it," he said. "I think you could have easily made an amazing Wonder Woman film if you had Angelina Jolie in her prime doing it. I think it would have done well, but I don't know if there's a big-name actress who can do it now."

Morrison, who's writing Wonder Woman Earth One -- a revision of the character's origin story, with art by Yanick Paquette -- continued:

"The executives just run these things over in their heads and say, 'I don't know if it's worth putting money into this. It's not a surefire hit. The boys want to see Batman brooding.'"

The same is true, to a lesser extent, for the character in comics, he said. "I always felt one of the fundamentals of Wonder Woman in at least the last two decades is that she always seems to be on trial, and I don't mean that in a story sense. Everyone's always saying, 'Why does nobody buy Wonder Woman? Why isn't she any good?'" Earth One takes that theme and places it at the center of the story, he explained. "It's kind of asking Wonder Woman to justify herself, which I feel has almost been what the character's had to do for a long time."

What is Nap60 smoking? All Marvel has is Black Widow and she sucks.

Also how can one be convinced when Supergirl, Catwoman, and Elektra flopped?

If Wonder Woman flops, don't expect any other female CBM ever.

Yep. WW is an iconic character. THE most popular female comic book character.. and they're not sure about it.

DC is [frick]ing up with their lack of faith in their characters. Marvel wins. Marvel fans win.

@niklander,

You'd probably have been a hit producer in the late 70's and into the 80's. That's pretty much how they rolled.

Wonder Woman and The Flash should be the next two DCCU movies after Batman/Superman. Any way you cut it.

Yea..WW should get the movie treatment & so should Flash.
I also think this would really be a mind blowing epic film..Aquaman:King Of Atlantis.

Make a glorious undersea world with massive battles & amazing CG creatures.
Make Aquaman go from joke to giant of the superhero world.

@LEVITIKUZ: THANK YOU! Someone finally says it about Black Widow.

Comic wise, I can't judge because I haven't read her stuff. Movie wise, I just don't care for the character, she's boring, and not all that cool and I'm not trying to sound like a fanboy or anything but I would of preferred Wasp over Widow. That's just me anyway.

I hate to tell WB/DC but I'm really tired Batman and Superman, not only on the big screen but on the small screen two. Would it be so bad as to put out a well written and directed movie about Flash, WW, or hell even Aquaman.

If Zena can run 6 seasons and Marvel can make lady Sif as likable as they did then why couldn't Wonder Woman work. I really believe they are over thinking the character.

@TheHawkWithin Actually she does. She has villains like Ares and Circe and Genocide which would provide for some amazing cinematic experiences. Just because you don't know jack about her mythos doesn't mean you should say she sucks.

Most retarded statement ever. How can you say she is boring if you haven't read anything about her? How does that make any sense?

WW and Flash need to be the top priorities for DC/WB.

I guarantee Marvel Studios would have made a solo Wonder Woman movie if she was a Marvel character and an Avenger. Now whether or not it would have been a hit is another matter, but they would have at least tried.
I'm glad WB is at least putting Superman and Batman together, but they are missing a huge opportunity to make a ground breaking feature film. People on here are right, she is the most iconic female superhero by far--write up something good and run with it!

Wonder Woman movie-yes. Flash movie-no. At least not until after Justice League. It will work if they do it right. I'm not saying it'll be MoS big or Iron Man 3 big or anything like that, but I think if they did it right it would at least do about the same as Thor or Captain America. The popularity of Buffy (TV show, not movie), Xena, Underworld with a female lead, some of Angelina Jolie's action movies all prove that female action heroes do work.

Now if WB wants to do a Justice League movie first to see how the character is received, I can kinda understand that (I don't agree, but I understand it.) But they are passing up the possibility of making a decent amount of money if they never make a Wonder Woman film. And eventually Marvel will step in and make a Ms./Captain Marvel film (still don't get the name change), so if WB doesn't get Wonder Woman out first, they could miss out.

Oh, and I love Black Window. I don't necessarily think she should get a solo film, but I love her in the films she's been in so far. (And I could possibly see a Bourne type film with her being good.)

I thought they should've just done.

-Batman/Superman

-Wonder Woman. -Flash

I think Wonder Woman & Aquaman working together would work. But I would prefer both to get their own series instead.

I have been rewatching the Justice League tv series & I can't for the life of me think why WB can't bring that stuff to the big screen. There has been different episodes that only had Wonder Woman in them & they were great. So why is it that hard to bring to the big screen.

Just look at the DC animated Wonder Woman movie. Translate that into live-action, flesh the story out more, and you have a hit movie.
