WONDER WOMAN 1984 Is Not A Sequel To The First Instalment; New Details And First Clip Revealed At Comic-Con

Aquaman and Shazam! and weren't the only DC Comics movies to receive the spotlight in Hall H today as Wonder Woman 1984 was also there but these new details may leave your scratching your head...

Warner Bros. kicked off the DC Universe section of its Hall H panel with Wonder Woman 1984 and Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot, and Chris Pine were all on hand to reveal a first look at the movie. Unfortunately, the director made it clear that the footage show to fans won't be released online because they've only just started shooting but we do at least have a description of what premiered in San Diego today.

Apparently, Jenkins chose 1984 because it was that year mankind - in the midst of the Cold War - was at both its best and worst. As a result, there seemed like no better time than then to have Diana Prince return for this adventure. Unfortunately, no one was willing to explain how Steve Trevor returns here.

There may be one explanation, though. According to Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman 1984 "is not a sequel" and is instead a whole new movie which Jenkins said is a standalone tale due to her not wanting to just "keep it going." Explaining that she's making a completely different sort of film to Wonder Woman, the filmmaker made it clear that it's not "more of anything" and is its own thing. Are you confused yet?

After all, does that mean Steve has returned because Jenkins is basically just going to retell Diana's origin story in 1984 and the two of them will basically meet again with no references to the fact he died? That's baffling but could be something DC will do as it moves away from conventional storytelling. We'll have to wait and see but here's a description of the footage shown to fans in Hall H:

In it, we see Wonder Woman in a mall in her full outfit — which looks brighter than when we last saw it. There are a couple of lowly thugs. There is a little girl who is like “whoa,” and Wonder Woman tosses her aside to safety against a giant Teddy bear. She lassos the bad guys, jumps over the balcony, pulling them as she descends to another floor. We then cut to the logo for WW84.

We are then treated to a shot of Wonder Woman running through the streets incredibly fast. It’s very clear this is still rough footage, as it looks kind of awkward, with her almost flying illogically. Still, the spirit of the footage is fun, and ironically, seemingly a bit sillier and goofy than perhaps we’d expect (at least that’s the impression I got with how cartoony the bad guys were).

@Roodi - it's quite simple really: from now on every DC movie is a reboot! Saves them from dealing with all that annoying continuity nonsense.

@Kyos - I don't think it's all that complicated. What she's trying to say is that it's a standalone story rather than directly tying into the first. It's the kinds of things directors say all the time.

TLDR: same continuity, new standalone story.

Sounds good. I dont mind the movie being another prequel. If anything im kind of glad patty jenkins is keeping WW isolated from the DCEU trainwreck snyder left behind. Why bother fixing his mistakes anyways?

Hmmm...confusing yet intriguing. I honestly wonder if we’re thinking too much into this, but either way, as long as its as good as the first one, I think we’ll be ok

@BlackBeltJones - Maybe elseworld?

@BlackBeltJones - DC/WB is a hot mess. The one property they had that was nearly perfect and they go and act like the first one never happened?! But they keep the same cast? Elsworld hardly ever works in comics, I think general audiences will NOT like this. Sad they have nobody over there with a funkin clue.

@BlackBeltJones -
It should be obvious that she meant that it stands on its own, instead of picking up exact plot threads from the first film... Because it was set in WWI. Not sure why everyone is jumping to the conclusion that this is suddenly some kind of Elseworld tale.

@Darkknight2149 - why didnt she just say that then? Thats the confusing part. No need for it. Her statement creates confusion, that simple.

@BlackBeltJones -
The exact quotes were "The way we look at this is not a sequel, it’s a new chapter, it’s a new story" and "I never want to do more of anything for the wrong reason…I don’t want to go to that place of ‘how do you keep it going and cash in?’ in my head. I have these characters that I love and this world that I love and we can make a whole new movie that’s completely unique and as strong as the first one? Of course I want to do that. But it’s not ‘more’ of anything, even though it’s evocative of everything that happened to the first one."

Never did anything Pati Jenkins or Gal Gadot said even remotely indicate a new continuity. She is pretty much saying that this is being approached as a second standalone Wonder Woman film, rather than as "Let's do the first film again but make it bigger!" It will be a tonal reboot at the most. Her meaning was pretty clear.

But as usual, the internet has to twist everything by jumping to massive conclusions that no one said or implied. And like a million times before, Warner Brothers is probably going to have to release a statement now, clarifying what was actually announced. I wonder how many of you read the quotes, instead of just read Josh Wilding's article and assumed you knew everything. When they said that Batman v Superman wasn't a Man of Steel sequel, did you actually think that was going to be a different universe? Honest question.

@Darkknight2149 - oh no I read the whole quote(s).

Like I said before, why say the words "is not a sequel" at all? What Patty said was definitive and descriptive enough.

@BlackBeltJones -
"Is not a sequel" =/= Continuity reboot

For all the previously mentioned and heavily explained reasons. And as also mentioned earlier, they said the exact same thing about Batman v Superman. There's literally no solid evidence to suggest that this is a reboot.

So, this is the last straw. I'm walking away from CBM because of JoshWilding. Everyone complains about him but we all stick around on this site anyway.

I'll get my news from superherohype.com from now on.
