Warner Bros. kicked off the DC Universe section of its Hall H panel with Wonder Woman 1984 and Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot, and Chris Pine were all on hand to reveal a first look at the movie. Unfortunately, the director made it clear that the footage show to fans won't be released online because they've only just started shooting but we do at least have a description of what premiered in San Diego today.
Apparently, Jenkins chose 1984 because it was that year mankind - in the midst of the Cold War - was at both its best and worst. As a result, there seemed like no better time than then to have Diana Prince return for this adventure. Unfortunately, no one was willing to explain how Steve Trevor returns here.
There may be one explanation, though. According to Gal Gadot, Wonder Woman 1984 "is not a sequel" and is instead a whole new movie which Jenkins said is a standalone tale due to her not wanting to just "keep it going." Explaining that she's making a completely different sort of film to Wonder Woman, the filmmaker made it clear that it's not "more of anything" and is its own thing. Are you confused yet?
After all, does that mean Steve has returned because Jenkins is basically just going to retell Diana's origin story in 1984 and the two of them will basically meet again with no references to the fact he died? That's baffling but could be something DC will do as it moves away from conventional storytelling. We'll have to wait and see but here's a description of the footage shown to fans in Hall H:
In it, we see Wonder Woman in a mall in her full outfit — which looks brighter than when we last saw it. There are a couple of lowly thugs. There is a little girl who is like “whoa,” and Wonder Woman tosses her aside to safety against a giant Teddy bear. She lassos the bad guys, jumps over the balcony, pulling them as she descends to another floor. We then cut to the logo for WW84.
We are then treated to a shot of Wonder Woman running through the streets incredibly fast. It’s very clear this is still rough footage, as it looks kind of awkward, with her almost flying illogically. Still, the spirit of the footage is fun, and ironically, seemingly a bit sillier and goofy than perhaps we’d expect (at least that’s the impression I got with how cartoony the bad guys were).
