DARK PHOENIX: The X-Men Unite Against One Of Their Own In Two More Intense Ultra Hi-Res Photos

After debuting the fiery teaser trailer for Dark Phoenix on Wednesday, 20th Century Fox decided just two days later to change up their release calendar a bit by delaying the long-awaited X-Men sequel to a prime summer date (June 7) and give its former Valentine's Day date to Alita: Battle Angel.

The big budget, high-concept Robert Rodriguez-directed film was previously scheduled to open this
December, but was at serious risk of being lost in the shuffle with Warner Bros.' Aquaman and Paramount's Bumblebee also slated to release during the same weekend.

With the trailer now officially out online and expected to screen ahead of Venom this weekend, the studio has released four new photos and all of those intriguing stills from late last year in ultra hi-resolution. Plus, they've also updated the poster with the new release date.

Jean Grey (Sophie Turner),wearing jeans and a grey shirt, approaches what we can only presume is a campfire based on its illuminating glow. Exactly what she's doing out in the middle of the woods - or who she's meeting - remains to be seen, but it's hard to imagine it's anything good.

We saw this scene in the trailer as Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Professor X (James McAvoy), Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), and Storm (Alexandra Shipp) find themselves at odds with Magneto (Michael Fassbender) yet again. In an unexpected twist, however, Beast (Nicholas Hoult) was actually spotted siding with the master of magnetism over Charles.

Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) meets a mysterious new character, played by 2x Academy Award-nominee Jessica Chastain, who is believed to be a shapeshifter intent on manipulating the Phoenix and using her to do her bidding.

Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Beast (Nicholas Hoult), and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee) seemingly join forces with Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Selene (Kota Eberhardt), and Red Lotus (Andrew Stehlin) in order to find a way to stop the Phoenix (Sophie Turner).

We first saw this photo back in December as Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) unleashes the Phoenix in space, a move that likely saves her, but also likely spells doom for humanity.

Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) returns as a full-fledged member of the X-Men, sporting the yellow and blue suit into battle against the Phoenix (Jean Grey). While she may have narrowly escaped Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac)'s clutches, it looks like her luck may finally run out next June.

While the Phoenix (Sophie Turner) may be getting top billing as the primary antagonist, it looks like it'll actually be 2x Academy Award-winner Jessica Chastain's mystery character that's pulling all the strings.

2019 is shaping up to be a big year for Sophie Turner as not only does she have Dark Phoenix opening in June, she'll also be playing a prominent role in the final season of HBO's critically acclaimed Game of Thrones.

The X-Men bury one of their own and based on the trailer, it really looks like it's Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). It could always be a misdirect, but considering that she only appears in scenes with the yellow-and-blue costume and not in any scenes with Magneto (Michael Fassbender), that presumably occur later in the film, it's hard to imagine that it isn't her that bites the dust. It would also explain why Beast (Nicholas Hoult) would turn on Charles (James McAvoy).

First-time director Simon Kinberg discusses a critical scene with Michael Fassbender, who has played Magneto in the past four X-Men films.

Here's an image we saw last week as the X-Men finally assemble, in their classic yellow-and-blue, against either Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) or another unknown enemy. From left-to-right, we see Beast (Nicholas Hoult), Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Professor X (James McAvoy), and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence).

We know Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is badly hurt in battle at some point in the film and it looks like he'll actually be captured before Charles (James McAvoy) and the X-Men come to recruit him on their latest mission.

This image has yet-to-be-released in hi-resolution, but we can see Jessica Chastain's mystery character taunting Charles Xavier (James McAvoy). Could the two already know each other or is this their first meeting?

Another image that has yet-to-be-released in hi-resolution, but it's a sweet image of Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) and Scott Summers (Tye Sheridan) sharing a tender moment before all hell breaks loose. Essentially the calm before the storm.

Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix features:
Director: Simon Kinberg
James McAvoy as Charles Xavier/Professor X
Michael Fassbender as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto
Jennifer Lawrence as Raven Darkhölme/Mystique
Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy/Beast

Alexandra Shipp as Ororo Munroe/Storm
Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler
Evan Peters as Peter Maximoff/Quicksilver
Jessica Chastain in an undisclosed role
Olivia Munn as Elizabeth Braddock/Psylocke

I’m not sure what’s worse, that this movie is getting made, potently pushing a reboot in the MCU further back, or Sony moving forward with the Spider verse. I real don’t see this or New Mutants making much of a mark, and I see Venom, Silver and Black, and even Mobius in serious trouble. Don’t get me wrong, I love that we are in a time where we actually have some great comics come to life on the big screen, but it’s about quality, having a plan, and executing that plan.
Maybe that’s just me being short sighted…

@ArthurFleck - Haha no, idk how I haven't heard it before. It's spot on. It's probably because I was late to the GOT party.

I didn't hop on until I read what happened at the end of season 3. :)

@guyatadesk - Yeah, I wasn't a fan at first. But after dat Red Wedding, I was there every Sunday. The best season (to me) is still season 4, and Oberyn is my favorite character, (from the show, specifically) followed closely by Arya.

@guyatadesk - I haven't read the books but I am familiar with the lore and how the show is different from the books, in that aspect. But yeah Jamie is def a fan favorite across both mediums. I like his character.
