DARK PHOENIX Concept Art Reveals More Fiery Takes On Jean Grey And Some Sinister New Skrull Designs

The movie wasn't exactly embraced by fans, but it's hard not to wonder what might have been looking at this concept art featuring alternate takes on the powered up Jean Grey and the shape-shifting Skrulls!

Dark Phoenix was a critical and commercial disappointment, and the final X-Men movie released by Fox before the rights returned to Marvel Studios. While it didn't come out that long ago, it already feels like the vast majority of fans have forgotten about the second big screen adaptation of "The Dark Phoenix Saga," but this new concept art from the film is still well worth a look.

In this latest batch, the spotlight is put on the movie's aliens. Originally set to be the Skrulls, they were later turned into the D'Bari (presumably to avoid comparisons being made to Captain Marvel).

What we got in the film itself was in equal parts forgettable and generic, and any one of these unique and actually rather terrifying designs would have been so much better. As a bonus, we also have some artwork featuring a fiery take on Jean Grey as she unleashes the power of the Phoenix.

All of these are more visually stunning than what ended up on the big screen, and could have genuinely been a sight to behold. Unfortunately, Fox decided to dial back the effects in reshoots.

Haven't we seen these already? David Masson posted them 'a month ago' (according to his ArtStation profile).

I'm still mad they put Quicksilver on a timeout the whole freakin film. Like come on, he's your most interesting character (besides X and Erik) and he's a fan favorite played by a funny actor.

Kinberg: "Let's make him trip in mid-air so he gets hurt."

@MadKingCipher - Would've made the movie an easier breeze to watch then, lol.

Been an xmen fan for 35 years and this movie literally broke my heart.. can you really call it dark Phoenix when it bore no resemblance to the source material. How hard is it to copy a great story from a godamn comic....BURN IN HELL KINBERG 😭

Finally saw this (didn’t want to but my girlfriends family had it on and I thought what the hell) and it’s even worse than I thought. Horrible special effects, no actually interesting set pieces or action scenes a nothing villain and once again severe contradiction of the timeline as even set up by the last movie. Glad it’s over.

I wish they kept the idea of Jean’s skin breaking away to reveal light/fire underneath as the original concept art (and magazine covers) suggested. Likewise, I wasn’t a massive fan of the pink and black effects for Phoenix. Maybe it’s just me, but if a character is called Phoenix then I want pure fire. It doesn’t help that the fire effects were in Apocalypse previously

I'm still amazed that there were so amny great ideas, but the movie turned out to be incredibly bland

I honestly liked the skrulls in DP more than CM.

But Jessica Chastain was awful. Badly written, bland performance.

Can't get mad about them butchering the X-Men (again), the Skrulls and the Dark Phoenix Saga (again) if you don't watch Dark Phoenix

Pretty creepy, I like it. But having the Shi'ar would've been more memorable/accurate

@TheRationalNerd - Yeah, that gets lost a lot in any Skrulls talk... there was no reason for them to be in the film in the first place. At least now we can get MCU Shi’ar...
