2016 is a crowded and incredibly exciting year for superhero movies, but one release which is flying somewhat under the radar is Gambit, an X-Men spinoff starring Channing Tatum. The actor landed the role after making it clear in interviews how interested in the Cajun character he is, and Fox are currently in the process of hunting for a director. So, just how excited is the actor about the movie?

"I love Gambit," Tatum says in the latest issue of Empire Magazine. "I grew up in the South; my father's from Loiuisiana. We'd go to New Orleans and I heard all the dialects. It felt so different from the rest of America; it has its own ancient culture. So I identified with that. And he always felt the most real of the X-Men to me. He's kind of a tortured soul and he's not a good guy. But he's not a bad guy, either. He walks his own path. And of course he plays cards and drinks and is a martial-arts badass!" It sounds like the movie is going to be pretty faithful to the comic books then, but that's not a huge surprise what with X-Men scribe Chris Claremont writing its treatment.

As for the current status of Gambit, the actor added: "Josh Zetumer just turned in the first draft of the script, and it's killer. None of us were sure how he was going to deal with the X-Men world. But we're going to be changing some of the tropes of these movies. It's always about saving the world (Laughs), but maybe we're going to shift things a liittle but. There's so many ways you can take [an origin story]. You could do it like Batman Begins, or a different take and go the Guardians of the Galaxy route. All I can say is, I'm super excited." The chances of Gambit showing up in X-Men: Apocalypse remains to be seen, but this movie sounds like it could be a sleeper hit!

He's in the right state of mind. No idea how the [frick] a Gambit movie got greenlit, and you lose me even more when you tell me this guy is starring, but stranger things have happened.

Tatum will become an instant fan favorite for Gambit once we we've all seen him in action. Card moves aside (laughs) I think he'll nail the accent. It's one thing to have Chris Claremont involved with this project and another to have a screenwriter who also gets the X-Men universe. The whole "saving the world" gig is cool and all but it gets super played out, Daredevil is a good example of having more personal battles than global one's.

2016...the year everyone wins. :)

Gambit can be immensely culturally competent, and the introductions to the Guilds can serve as broader introduction on such a smaller scale of narrative. The basic premise and its concepts would probably show direct correlation to the hit video game series Assassins Creed and even deeper to novels such as Alamut but obviously modern and coated with gravitas and charm. Batman Begins is funny comparison as I always saw it more on the lines of Doctor Strange, but the first hour or so can really help incentivize Gambit's origin.

I believe Josh posted it already maybe a few days ago.

Channing could be quite good in the role, despite not physically resembling the usually lanky Gambit,

hope this looks more like Deadpool than Singer's X-men. (Just going by the production photos of Deadpool it looks very cool and comicbook-esque)

I'm Giving Tatum a chance on this and not second guessing that this movie will be glorious. My issue with trying to develop Gambit is later on down the line, you have to bring Rogue in the mix. I honestly love Anna Paquin as Rogue, but I hope they give her more power based on you comic book counter part and making sure the on screen chemistry is there with both Tatum and Anna. If they decide to recast, it better be a good one.

I like Channing but not for Gambit. Hell, why are they even making a Gambit movie to begin with? There are so many other characters in the mutant universe that deserve a movie. Cable, The New Mutants, X-Force

If you told me years ago that one of the biggest stars in America was going to be the star of a Gambit solo film that he himself was campaigning for, I would've laughed hysterically at you.

...boy was I wrong, lol

@RogerYoung Yea, he has won me over his past fewm movies...but he really doesnt have the lanky Gambit look...

Quite a bit can be done with costume, filming, angles.... Of course Jackman has very little physical resemblence to Wolverine (heigh especially) and he worked out fine

I have my issues with Taterhead...but I'm all in one this one. Fox hasn't disappointed me since 2009, and everything they're doing now looks a step up from their past. Fantastic Four looks great, Apocalypse is shaping up beautifully, Deadpool gonna be the GOAT...

Fox, you got my money, bring on Potato Head Gambit, I'm ready!

@MexicanSuperman "Hold" is probably better word..Deadpool looked like a dead stick for a long time..and yea, I bet thats is exactly the line they are thinking. Which begs the question..

If we get a good rated R deadpool movie and it makes money...does that mean we might get a R rated Xforce?!?(evil grin)

I gotta agree. Taylor Kitsch did admirably in an awful movie, and I think he would be a great Gambit with good writing and direction behind him.

But hey, I just got cast as Rocket Racer myself. Just happens to be my favorite MARVEL hero. I identify with him because I too once owned a skateboard and I wear headphones some times. He's the best ever in the whole world!
