Is This The Real Reason Rupert Wyatt Exited The GAMBIT Movie?

A new report claims to be able to shed some light on the reason Rupert Wyatt walked away from Fox's planned X-Men spin-off, Gambit. We were initially told it was because of a "scheduling conflict."

Last week we found out that Fox's Gambit movie had suffered another major blow when it was announced that director Rupert Wyatt had parted ways with the project. At the time both parties claimed the reason for the split had to do with script complications, which in turn led to an increased budget, ultimately delaying production and causing a conflict with one of Wyatt's prior commitments.

Well, a new report from THR paints a slightly different picture.

According to them, although the studio got on well with Wyatt ("He shows up. He comes early. He stays late. He's got good ideas"), the Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes director simply had a very different vision for what he wanted to do with the character, and Fox wasn't prepared to allow him to have creative control. That's not unusual when you're dealing with a massive $100 million superhero movie of course, but evidently Waytt wasn't going to compromise his concept for anyone and chose to walk away - something the trade notes he has done in the past on projects such as The Equalizer, The Terminal Spy, and Dawn Of The Planet The Apes.

Gambit will star Channing Tatum as the titular card-flinging Cajun, and Lea Seydoux as Belladonna Boudreaux, and has a release date set for October 7, 2016... for the time being, anyway.

We've seen time and time again that Tatum isn't a good lead actor for an action flick. His best work has been in 21st Jump Street where he's not responsible for carrying the movie. Everything he's done on his own as the main hero in an action movie has been garbage.

That's how I know this movie will suck.

Because Fox has done so well their "creative control" in the recent past.

I believe that a lot more than I believe the old scheduling conflicts excuse. Hard to pick a side though without knowing what the differing visions for the movie are.

One of the great film injustices: Gambit (whom i like, but doesnt need his own film) gets a SOLO movie, but we can't get a DREDD SEQUEL?!?!?!

This movie has flop written all over it. Fox needs to get their $#!t together. They are starting to kill our beloved CBM genre.

The last three action movies Tatum has led are Jupiter Ascending, White House Down and the Eagle. All three were critically panned and did terrible at the box office. Why hasn't FOX realize that this guy is at best a supporting actor in rom-coms?

Lets face it FOX is mess beyond any X Men films that Hack Singer is helming..........

Do not get wrong the last two X Men films have been great....though the costumes and characters organs suck. FOX will not be successful with any other spinoffs.

Yeah yeah Wolverine was good but now that Hugh Jackman is leaving you can kiss those future movies goodbye.

@captainamerica

The difference is, MS still puts out a decent movie, Fox puts out garbage flops (see F4) that causes the whole genre to look bad.

Lol all this hate on Fox. People forgetting that only 2 of their 7 X-Men movies are bad and X1 started the modern CBM genre.

But F4 is another subject, all of Fox's F4 films are garbage

Surely a film about a wise-cracking thief in the world of mutants with superpowers is far more interesting than some guy shrinking

Wyatt was my biggest draw for this movie. I love Gambit and his world outside of the X-Men, but Tatum doesn't strike me as the right actor to lead it. If they can find another director as good as Wyatt, I'm all in. For now, anticipation is severely waning.

@HAILHYDRA You could have been put Daniel D Lewis in those movies and they still would have gotten the same reception.

@MercwithMouth Exactly.

I didn't like this casting from the start, though Origins was terrible, I rather enjoyed Kitsch's portrayal. The only way this pos would be successful is if the female audience sees this movie(and if it still gets made they more than likely will😒).

But yeah, you know this Tatum, he's only good in the Jump Street movies and I liked his role in Foxcatcher, but he lacks true acting skill...

@ComicsBornAndBred dude the wait is killing me. Probably my most needed sequel aside from:

Wanted 2
Hellboy 3
Kick Ass 3
DREDD 2

@Highflyer, that's just how it works in the business. As an actor if you string together multiple consecutive flops, no one wants you. Look at Taylor Kitsch. I'm surprised all those bad movies haven't slowed down Tatum at all.
