Jean Grey, (potentially) the most powerful mutant alive, is set to feature in her own Marvel Comics solo series spinning out of the events of Krakoa, and the publisher has now shared a first look at three variant covers for the first issue.

Written by Stephanie Phillips with art by Alessandro Miracolo, Phoenix focuses on Jean becoming a "galaxy-traversing super hero" as she emerges from the explosive finale of Krakoa. "With renewed purpose, Jean embraces what was always hers: the breathtaking power of the Phoenix Force. Alone in space, she not only must do what no one else can: she yearns to. Whatever Jean does—or fails to do—will bring darkness to the universe and haunt her in ways she can scarcely imagine."

The covers by Aka and Rose Besch spotlight Jean’s new Phoenix costume, while Greg Land's artwork is a callback to the original Dark Phoenix design.

"Jean is one of the most powerful characters I've ever written,” said Phillips when the new series was announced. "The beauty and challenge to Jean is that she is imbued with a cosmic force alongside the morals, shortcomings, and empathy of a human being. The dichotomy between those two is something incredibly special about Jean, and means that she is constantly doing a dance between humanity and absolute power."

"So, that dance is what we hope to have on full display in this story... a cosmic ballet that shows how beautiful the Phoenix Force can be when working in tandem with Jean Grey," she continued. "And let me assure you, Alessandro Miracolo has made that cosmic dance look absolutely gorgeous."

"This is fantastic! Being an X-Men fan since I was a kid, I’m so happy to work on such an important character like Phoenix, and Stephanie’s writing has been incredible!" Miracolo added. "Depicting Phoenix out in the cosmos and unleashing her energy has been thrilling and simply epic, and there’s also really emotional moments that I hope to make the most of. I wish I could say more but I hope everyone is excited because this will be fun!"

@Reeds2Much - I don't mind Greg Land art at least he makes the women look attractive unlike some of the artists working today.

@Havok6985 - funny story about the green ranger. Jason David frank did some seasons when disney took over the franchise. And during fights he'd shout what he always did during fight. You know, the "hya, zit, hya". Well apparently one of the execs saw his fight scene and passed him a note asking him not to swear during his takes 🤣

Potentially the most powerful?
She is the most powerful period. Apocalypse? Nope Xavier? Nope Onslaught? Not even on the same league as the mighty Phoenix

@Gambito - Phoenix isn't Jean, though... Jean is only "potentially" the most powerful mutant when she can't access the Phoenix Force.

@MarkCassidy - In the recent run she's basically finally embraced the Phoenix Force. They talked it out.

Can Marvel Comics hire an artist that doesn't want to draw portraits?

Who was it that was complaining on here that there were no sexy women on comic covers anymore? Asking for no particular reason . . .

2nd one is way too anime for my tastes. 3rd one her boobs make the whole pose and outfit awkward. It’s like the artist took all this time on a great piece and by the time he got to the boobs turned into a drooling neanderthal and said “me like boobies, heh heh.” Not that female bodies ever look normal in comics, but isn’t that why most of us started reading in the first place?

“Greg Land's artwork is a callback to the original Dark Phoenix design.” All of Greg Land’s work is a callback to some other work.
