In the closing moments of Eternals, the immortals who stopped Tiamut's emergence were taken from Earth by Arishem so they could be judged by the Celestial.
In a post-credits scene, Harry Styles' Eros made his MCU debut by promising Thena, Makkari, and Druig that he could help them track down their friends. That's where we left things and, two years later, there's still no indication of when or where this cliffhanger will be addressed.
There have been rumblings about an Eternals sequel, though nothing has been confirmed. The characters could return elsewhere, of course, and Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was asked for news about Styles' MCU future at last night's The Marvels premiere.
"He's excited. We're excited. We will see," he responded, seemingly caught a little more off guard than usual. "You introduce a lot of new characters in a lot of movies and a lot of tags. Where do the tag folk reappear? That's a good question."
Elsewhere in the conversation, the X-Men also came up. As you might expect, Feige wasn't willing to give much away but did drop a big hint about Marvel Studios' imminent plans for mutants.
"I dont know if it's delicate, it's super exciting, but the X-Men are as solid and rich and great a concept and characters that exist. [There's] the return of the animated series next year, which we're very excited about. I saw some new final episodes today which really bring you back to that core of who the X-Men are and that soap opera that those characters represent."
He'd finish by teasing, "And in live-action, people will see...perhaps, soon."
We're guessing that those of you who have no issues with spoilers and leaks will know what he's referring to there. It's an exciting time to be a fan of these characters, regardless, especially with X-Men '97 and Deadpool 3 right around the corner. Marvel Studios has only just started meeting with writers for its eventual X-Men reboot, though, and that's not heading our way until after Avengers: Secret Wars.
Back to Eternals, and there was a time when it looked like a movie which could win Marvel Studios an Oscar. Reviews were unkind and the movie was a casualty of the post-pandemic box office. What that means for its sequel prospects is hard to say right now.
