The Wolverine Undergoing Rewrites; New Character/Story Info!

Variety have exclusively revealed that Total Recall scribe Mark Bomback will work on Christopher McQuarrie's script for The Wolverine. There is also some info on a new character joining the proceedings..

According to Variety Mark Bomback with "re-tool" the script for Fox's Mutant follow up. By all accounts Chris McQuarrie's original script was the talk of Hollywood, drawing great praise from anyone who read it. So was that all bullshit or is this something to do with new director James Mangold wanting to make some changes? Anyway whatever the reason Bomback is one of Fox's "go to guys" having already worked on Total Recall, as well as movies like Unstoppable and Die Hard 4. See a pattern there? I just hope this doesn't become another action packed but brainless screenplay.

Variety would also seem to have uncovered a little more on the story as well as revealing a new character..

Story will find Wolverine suffering from amnesia and searching for answers about his past in the Japanese criminal underworld where he finds both love and tragedy.

The entire cast will be comprised of Japanese and Japanese-American actors except for a newly-expanded character named Viper, who's the Caucasian secretary for Japan's Minister of Justice.
.

Now there are 3 "Vipers" in the Marvel Comics Universe (as far as I know). All are Captain America villain incarnations. One is actually another name for Madame Hydra-I think we can rule her out. More likely this will be a brand new character created for the movie. So what do you guys make of this? Bomback rewriting McQuarrie? Sounds pretty fishy to me but Fox have earned some optimism with X-Men: First Class so lets see how this pans out.

Hmmm...Well, from what what everyone was talking about, McQuarrie's script was great. I guess we will have to wait and see how this ends up. Hopefully good, of course. After First Class, Fox needs to be smart and deliver more awesome CBMs.

Anyone remember the alleged list of characters from way back in October? It listed Viper as a corrupt Minister's secretary.

http://splashpage.mtv.com/2010/10/29/wolverine-2-characters/

"Other characters include a corrupt minister named Noburo Moro, his secretary Viper and a Japanese version of Frank Sinatra. Yes, really!"

I guess that turned out to be true.

Uuuum actually it's possibly madame hydra, well not exactly her but based on her. If i recall Madame Hydra showed up in the japan arc of wolverine as an associate of Silver samurai

so are they doing the typical Fox thing and completely making things up? seems to me you could take away the mutant part, the claws, the name and you would have a pretty decent movie. That way you wouldn't be destroying a great character.

FYI, Ror... the Viper you're thinking of DOES have a place in the Wolverine mythos.

The former Madame Hydra was actually married to Wolverine for a while in the 90's.

To be fair, I don't think the rewrite is introducing a new character. That article I linked is from 10 months ago and Viper was supposedly in McQuarrie's script.

Also, Viper has been involved with stories involving The Hand and The Silver Samurai.Hell, she was married to Logan. So, it makes sense for her to be in the film in some capacity.

Yes but Marvel will have the rights to that character since she is more closely associated with Cap and not the X-Men. They may come up with their own version of her but it would have to be pretty significantly different to get away with it.

I do believe the goal here is to make the very best movie possible because Fox knows that their franchise can't take another hit in terms of bad critical reception. First Class was the first step back to respectability, now they have to keep the ball rolling.

@RorMachine, that is true, but have you ever read the rights agreements between Fox and Marvel? It states that Fox is able to use any X-Men character or any character closely related to the X-Men that enables them to tell the story they want to tell. That was their way of being able to use a number of non-mutant characters without explicitly naming specific characters.

So, they do have the rights to use Viper/Madam HYDRA, as she's closely related to Wolverine.

For contractual issues, the character has been split into two entities:

For the sake of the X-Men contract, she can only ever be called Viper, while none of her Hydra backstory can be used.

For the sake of the MCU, she can only ever be called Madame Hydra, while none of her X-Men related storylines can be used.

After all the praise the script guy, it sounds ike typical studio exec thing, wanting to "pump up the action" or some crap like that and butcher the story. XMFC returned a lot of credibility to the franchise, this better not become another XMOW.

here comes the Fox train, it's going to run over the script, which was apparently one of the best scripts these people have ever read, and completely [frick]ing ruin it the way Fox does with all good things.

god how would any director, screenwriter, actor, or anything ever want to work for Fox? they have the worst track record/history of all the big studios. they [frick]ing ruin everything they touch. and here they come again.

@Pointman: So Jackman's tall. So what? Other than that, I would say he really looks the part. Not to mention, we have to appreciate the fact that he's stuck by the character through so many films.

The height of Wolverine has changed in the comics. I'm not saying I'm a fan of the 6 foot Wolvie bit Jackman does a good job. If only Marvel could get the licensing back on this character. That would be awesome. Also for those that don't like Jackman, give it a few years and I'm sure he'll be done with the character. Maybe.

Wolverine actually married Viper in the comics back in '98. I forget the details but I seem to remember he agreed and then he got backlash from all the women he knew.
