Tony Scott Won't Be Directing Wolverine 2

Tony Scott Won't Be Directing Wolverine 2

Or at least, its highly unlikely. The Director has enough on his plate trying to decide what movie to make next from a choice of 3.

When Scott was announced as a possible director to take over directing duties on the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine sequel I'm not sure how many people actually thought he would do it since its really not his style. I for one hoped he would as I'm a fan of most of his movies. Anyway, doesn't look like its happening. According to screen rant..

The veteran helmer is pondering the John Grisham adaptation The Associate, which has Shia LaBeouf lined up to star; he also has his long-gestating Hell’s Angels film, which also has LaBeouf onboard alongside Mickey Rourke. There’s also Potzdamer Platz, which would also star Rourke. Still with me?

Apparently he is leaning towards either Potzdamer Platz or Hell’s Angels, and whichever one of those he chooses still has to film after his next flick, Unstoppable with Denzel Washington and Chris Pine which opens November 12th. Scott isn't what you would call the most subtle of directors, but he is very good at what he does, and manages to provide great action but still keep the heart in place(see Man On Fire), so I was looking forward to seeing what he might do with the Wolverine sequel, which will follow(how faithfully we don't know) Logan's sojourn in Japan as depicted in Chris Claremont and Frank Miller's acclaimed comic run. I didn't think the first movie was quiet as bad as most, and I'm not even sure how badly Gavin Hood did given the script he had to work with, but I would definitely like some new blood on the next one.

Who do you guys think would do the Japan Saga justice on the big screen?

As long as we don't get the BORIGINS director...

Thats all that matters! ; P

WOLVERINE in JAPAN = Classic!

LEEE: I have to agree with Ror on this. The director didn't write the story for Origins. It was the story that sucked. I think Hoods directing is what made the movie watchable.

Shaman: You really think so? Even though comic fans had a strong dislike for the original, it did well at the box office. I would think there is too much money to be made for the film to not see the light of day.

Ya Know what would be Awesome!

Reboot Wolverine!

I don't care who plays him just as long as its true to the comics, give him a mask and Costume and doesn't turn him into such a Woosy!

After seeing how LSD & Jackman completely overhyped the universaly trashed pile of shit we got with XO:W, praising one of the worst directors i've ever seen, i'm sure Fox will stick with their First Class requel and develop the franchise further with it, Star Trek style. The Japan saga will never happen and we can forget about Jackman being Wolverine altogether. After the fan backlash he got, he ain't strapping on those claws anymore IMO. I predict the next time we will be seeing Wolverine will be in First Class's sequel. Bring on Christian Kane!!!

Yeah, I'm with Ror. Really don't know how much we can blame Gavin Hood for the first failure.

Tony Scott's take definitely could have been interesting. The only problem with Man of Fire is it could have used a little more editing. I swear, the Lord of the Rings films come out and it seems like ever since directors think they can leave their films as long as the want.

I'll have to ponder who a great director would be for this one. Somebody who can set a distinctive mood and manage action. (The picture attached to the article is a great reference by the way, just add blood.) Hmmm...

Tea- I personally was so dissapointed of how bad the movie was that i didn't even realise all the liberties they had taken. The film in itself can be compared to GI Joe's quality. It has shitty special effects, lackluster action scenes, completely forgettable acting (aside from jackman & Liev) and one of the weakest plots i have ever witnessed. And critics seem to have thought the same. Sure the movie took shitloads of liberties but i could have put them completely aside had the film been any good. In all honesty, film making wise, Ratner's X3 was a masterpiece next to X-Men Abominations: Wolverine.

That's a shame, I enjoy his work as well...Good find @Ror as always, even though it isn't necessarily good news...haha Personally, and bear with me on this one, what about Edward Zwick? Just an idea...haha

Same here Tea, quiet a few of my mates have never read a comic and really liked the film. I mean they didn't think it was a masterpiece obviously, but they liked it more than Iron Man 2 anyway! Just goes to show you the biased/non biased approach that goes along with being a comic/non comic fan.

Ditto to Shaman. I have friends that aren't that into comics, but like film, and they really thought it lacked. The whole second half just falls apart. The films not completely worthless, but its not good.

Ror - Wow. It gotta re-watch Iron Man 2. I must not have been paying attention if its not as good as Wolverine.

"The veteran helmer is pondering the John Grisham adaptation The Associate."

That's actually the best bit of news in this article because I love Grisham's novels, lol! He would have been a good choice for Wolverine 2...however, I think it's far more important for them to get a decent scriptwriter because the first movies story was a mess! The film itself wasnt really that bad and I did quite enjoy it, but from a comic book fans perspective, I hated it! :P Nice find anyway ROR!

Shaman - 8/5/2010, 8:07 AM
Mass- For a truly epic Wolverine Japan Saga, my answer to your directorial pondering is: V for Vendetta + Ninja Assassin= An awesome Wolverine Japan Saga directed by McTeigue!!!

Ror- I honestly don't know what i hate most between Punisher: War Zone and Wolverine. I really disliked Gavin's directing. The pacing was completely off, the link between the characters' conections were abrupt in a sense that i really felt like there were huge gaps missing in the cut we got. There was just no flow whatsoever. They could have fleshed out Logan's time in the army, the time he spent with Weapon X, Gambit, Blob and Wraith all felt thrown in the film. Most of the performences seemed phoned in. I dunno, to me it was bad film making at it's worse.

jjmeylar - 8/5/2010, 8:07 AM
@Tea: I agree, man. I thought that the first one was quite enjoyable. It wasn't quite as enjoyable as the video game and it's not the way I'd have done the movie, but even so. I mean: if ifs and buts were tits and nuts: we'd all have a happy Christmas. :p
MassExecutions
MassExecutions - 8/5/2010, 8:12 AM
@Shaman - AH! See I thought about McTeigue, particularly with Ninja Assassin in mind, but I thought the action style, while gory, is still a little two stylized and clean. Not the kind of savage, animalistic style if think of for Wolverine (see picture above). Still, maybe so since there would be ninjas.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/5/2010, 8:14 AM
A Ninja Assassin type deal would work great..even though that actual movie was awful! Still, tone down the cartoon gore a bit and if we ever do get an R rated Wolvie movie I would say McTeige is a good choice.

Shaman, yeah no doubt it didn't flow very well, and those character were jammed in unnecessarily, but I didn't think the performances were bad at all, in fact I though Jackman and Screiber were great. The script was a let down though. As for the pacing, well I wouldn't say it was any worse than Iron Man 2 in that regard.

Mass- Well, i haven't read the Japan Saga. I know i'm missing out here. But i had the feeling that that Saga would have been where Wolverine learned to tame himself with the way of the samurai. So in a sense, i understand that Wolverine is better suited for savage & gritty fighting a la Proyas but Japan would be the perfect clean fight setting for someone like McTeigue, the Wachowskis or Snyder. I feel that his savage/gritty ways would have been brilliant for the era where he looses his adamantium and his beast side takes over, somewhat ;)

Ror- Well.. um... *ahem*... you see... i still haven't seen Ironman 2 yet LOL. And i definitely agree that Jackman & Schreiber were the best performances of the film. But here is where i think its actually a bad thing. Those two performances were so great that they seemed like they were part of an other film entirely. They didn't fit in the shitfest at all! They stuck out like Megan Fox's toe-thumbs, only as if those toe-thumbs were the best part of Megan Fox's body LOL. The rest was just aweful and it was cringe inducing to me to see those two diamonds swirl down the drain with the rest of the diarrhea.

now for all the film studios to actually read some comic books & get it right this time.

Wait a minute. Does that mean Fox won't make Deadpool R rated either? SCREW THAT. A PG Deadpool movie SHOULD NOT BE MADE.

Has Edward Zwick made any other movies with action besides Last Samurai and Blood Diamond (which I haven't seen)?

haha, it wasn't great. Thats the best you'l get outta me! I just enjoyed it despite its failings. I still want a damn better one next time though! I would really liek to see Jackman play Wolvie one last time, and get a fitting send off. Because despite what the "He's a pansy, he's a dancer, blah blah" crowd say, without a fully R rated blood bath of a movie, which we were never going to get folks, Jackman did a great job at balancing everything out accordingly.

A replacement..well, I didn't think Christian Kane was very good in Angel which is all i've seen him in, buuuut, man thats a hard one! I'll get back to ya

This is hilarious. We will actually have to wait for Wolverine to get LESS popular to see a movie done right, because that's the only way that the rights might change hands and someone might make it rated R. Plus, a lower budget would actually be better if it led to less effects and more gritty fights.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 8/5/2010, 8:44 AM
It doesn't really NEED to be rated R guys. Think back to all of the old school Wolvie comics before marvel allowed themselves to go gory. Claremont's run, the new X Men(Blue and Gold teams?, even Whedon's run on Astonishing. Those were great stories and depicted a great Wolverine. There doesn't have to be blood and heads flying everywhere to establish that he's suppressing animalistic rage! Its only one part of his character anyway, its far from everything that defines him.
Shaman
Shaman - 8/5/2010, 8:46 AM
Tea- Donner would have ROCKED the first Wolverine film IMO. But for the Japan saga... i dunno. Something more serious would be better. The way Fox is thinking, i wouldn't be surprised if they got Ratner to do it since he had all that "Asian Rush Hour"... "experience". Oh and i almost picked up NINJA the other day cause it was really cheap. Glad to hear that i made the right choice LOL

Ror- I haven't seen anything of Kane's but physically he fits. I'm still open for plenty more choices you can think of. I haven't found anyone i'd praise for the part, myself. And they BETTER make a better film with the next Ironman! It should be nothing short of an epic chapter, with Mandarin as the main villain and all. I want that next one to be critically acclaimed!!! I hope they learn from whatever mistakes they made with the second one.

Mass- I couldn't agree more! PG13 ain't up Deadpool's alley! It would be like a PG13 Dr Giggles!!! :P

Anil- I haven't seen anything of him but he sure does look the part :)

@RorMachine - I think that the lack of blood and flying limbs in the comics is reflective of the strength of the medium. Comics show key moments, not continuous action. Comics are more abstract and can show the essence of the character without too much gore, but the lack of gore in the film hurts the suspension of disbelief. If you were actually there, watching the situations happen in reality, you WOULD see the gore. A great director could get away with not showing it, but it would still be a handicap I would rather do without.

ALMOST off topic comment - In my game of "Who would you cast if you could pick any actor from any time period" I just keep coming back to Charles Bronson for Wolverine, even though he doesn't quite have the right look.
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 8/5/2010, 9:00 AM
Mass: Charles Bronson would be The Punisher, he may as well be named Castle in his Deathwish movies. Check out this (( Avengers )) fancast I did under the (any actor from any time period) assumption a while back.

Tea- Well... hmmmm..... you might be on to something. I had completely forgotten about that. The man could still have it in him ;)

And i'm not a fan of Tarantino at all but... i gotta say, although i want him to stay the hell away from The Shadow, he just might be able to pull of a great Japan Saga for Wolverine. What do y'all think? Thing is... i'm not quite sure he'd be caught dead being associated with this franchise.

@Hawksblueyes - I know what you're saying, what with Deathwish and all, but he's just to short. That's one of the reasons I keep coming back to Wolverine. That, and his earlier stuff like the Dirty Dozen.
