Now that Darren Aronofsky is confirmed to direct his first comic book movie The Wolverine, which is said to be a standalone chapter and not a direct sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine, many are wondering how will Aronofsky approach the character and of course, the story.

In this video interview, director talks about his vision for the film, why he decided to do something different that what he usually does and much more. Check it out:

I know that many of you (including me) were very disappointed with X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but hear me out. I know it is still FOX and everything, but with Matthew Vaughn directing First Class and now Aronofsky doing this, it seems that they are trying to make these comic book movies at least a little better. Both Vaughn and Aronofsky are great directors and I'm curios what will they do with X-Men movies. I think that Aronofsky is the best possible choice to direct this chapter. Why? Because he has never done anything like this and he knows how to make great stories and characters. Just look at his films from Requiem for a Dream, The Wrestler to his upcoming Black Swan. So, who knows, this will maybe surprise you. What are your thoughts?

Great find Wolvie buddy) I'm really glad that Wolverine is actually getting a film about Wolverine. Hopefully theres some good Samurai stuff, but not too good since Marvel Studios still needs a decent Iron Fist movie.

Oh, and BTW I agree with you totally. Because of all the rant FOX has been getting, I never wanted to say they're trying to make better movies, but I believe they are. And I really think that having a director for a CBM, whose past resume is quite diverse from that CBM seems to result in a great movie.

Does he really need the scarf? Makes him look like such a douche....

Otherwise, interesting that its a standalone film, but still with Hugh Jackman.

They could keep doing this with all CBM's ala James Bond. Not directly sequels but still in the same world..

Interesting, interesting. Im very excided to see what kind of movie he comes up with!:)... And hopefully it will not suck like that last bizarre supposedly Wolverine movie.

Hugh Jackman is great, but i think Aronofsky and fox should just get a new guy as wolverine. Someone smaller bad ass bad tempered looking guy?:) Im thinking Stephen Moyer!

i am actually excited about this movie because aronofsky is amazing director, and the performance he got out of jackman in the fountain was immense, it was probably the best acting i had seen of jackson so i have faith in aronofsky, and i will admit that the talent fox is bringing in to make there CBM looks like there using there heads BUT this fox and there still enough time for them to frick this up

as crazy as the fox X universe is i hope it still is able to fit with the continuity which should not be hard cause there is a lot of time that we have not accounted for Logan but the way he talks it is almost like his is out to prove something as opposed to making a wolverine movie and if you don't want to make it in the Fox universe and continuity just don take the job

this makes me a bit nervous

Ken Watanabe as Lord Shingen
Tadanobu Asano, Collin Chou, Louis Ozawa (from Predators) or Takeshi Kaneshiro as Silver Samurai

I hate to say it, but the X-men series needed a REALLY shitty movie that would make FOX realize how far this franchise has fallen. X-men 3 was bad, but it wasn't Batman & Robin bad; it was just mediocre. Kids loved it and it made a lot of cash, and gave FOX enough reason to continue making lesser-quality films, one after another.

All I can say is THANK GOD for Origins: Wolverine. Everything about that movie was a failure. The script sucked, the acting sort of sucked, the directing sucked, and it had ZERO hype. When the movie leaked onto the net, it was a godsend to all us geeks. It sucked any hype out of the equation and by the time it arrived in theaters, it was DOA.

The thing I love about Aronofsky in this interview is how he goes out of his way to indirectly diss Origins. He's like "God no, there's no 2. This has nothing to do with the other movie." Thank God.

Doesn't make alot of sense to me. He almost gets angry at the guy calling it Wolverine 2. How can you have the same guy (Hugh) play the same character (Wolverine) and say it has nothing to do with the rest of the franchise?
AlexDeLarge87
AlexDeLarge87 - 11/20/2010, 7:17 PM
I think the main impact is money. If they would put less money on it than in X-Men Originals... or whatever, i think they could let Aronofsky make it R-Rated.

The money problem was delaying Ridley Scott´s Alien: Prequel too.

i bet u someone at FOX warn Thomas Rothman about all his failer with the comic book movies he better improve his work or he lose his job. maybe thats why FOX is hiring better directors.

@AlexDeLarge666

i doubt it will be R-Rated most likely its a PG-13

I agree dude. Although I'm intrigued by having a directors director such as Aronofsky taking a shot at this character, I must admit I'm tired of Hugh Jagoff as Wolverine. I would've been much more excited at the prospect of him doing a total reboot. As for him turning this franchise around and pulling a "Nolan" so to speak, I'm cautiously optimistic. He's making a wise "first move" by distancing his telling from the previous iterations, but I think he could've gone further and ditched Jagoffman.

I'm sorry I have no faith in fox putting out a decent comic book movie. I will wait to watch it online if it changes my feeling about fox so be it, but until then I will not spend my hard earned money on any comic book movie that was done by fox.

There's nothing wrong with trying something different as long as the people involved respect the source material, themes, and/or emotion of the title they are adapting.

God who the [frick] cares about the mask?! Like, if the movie has great writing and exciting action scenes, an interesting plot, and oscar-caliber acting, none of that will count if Wolverine (who doesn't always wear a mask in the comics either) doesn't wear a mask? He's not Batman, or Spider-man, or The Mask or something.

This is the movie I am most excited for. Green Lantern was my number one, but this is going to be better. At least they will end the Wolverine movies on a high note.

This has the best chance of "righting" the ship.

Jbak368,

I agree. In the comics, most of Wolverine's solo stuff is without a costume. If the story and characterization is right, he doesn't need one. He can wear similar to the movie leathers.

Curmudgeon - 11/20/2010, 11:38 PM
I've always wondered... why the hell does Wolverine even need a mask?

It's not protective... he'd heal himself anyways.

And he didn't exactly need to keep his identity secret when even HE didn't know what his true identity was.

Well its too bad he's trying to be that moustache hipster, self important, scarf wearing douche, because i really do love his work. I feel like he's a decent guy who's a genre fan at heart. I mean, most of his pictures kinda are. That and he was attached to Robocop forever and thats gotta count for something! Like i was saying, just a guy who grew up in the eighties, and was most likely turned on to the idea of being a film maker through a lot of the genre films of the time. Seems like a geek at heart, who's still working on a 'look.'
Hellkat1979
Hellkat1979 - 11/21/2010, 12:32 AM
Oh yeah, that being said, i can't wait for this! I'm not certain why FOX is allowing him the pleasure. As long as Aronofsky gets final cut or some thing close to his vision, without a lot of interference, this should be amazing. It would also give him opportunity to do more, which he seems to want... to be of a Nolan level. Creative control on a big budget. We'll see...
