Jackman Speaks About Fellow Super-Soldiers

Jackman Speaks About Fellow Super-Soldiers

In the first full interview about the new Wolverine movie, Hugh Jackman speaks about Gambit and Deadpool among other things..There could be fanboy backlash!

By MarkCassidy - Dec 11, 2008 05:12 PM EST

In an interview with Total Film magazine Jackman had this to say:

ON GAMBIT: "Gambit is in the film. When we showed footage at Comic-Con the place just went mental. He’s played by Taylor Kitsch who does a great, great job.

He’s a little more showy than Wolverine, but there’s a similarity. They’re outsiders, they’re wise-cracking, they’re anti-authority.

In this movie Gambit plays the role a little bit like Wolverine did in the first X-Men. He’s not part of any group, he’s not on anybody’s side. Wolverine gets him because he needs the information off him, but Gambit’s not going to give it – not without a fight. And they get a fight, the two of them get a fight. I’m really, really happy with the dynamic between the two.

I quite liked Pyro in X-Men 2. I really loved that kind of relationship, because he turns to the dark side in a way. I always feel when I was acting that Wolverine could see a lot of himself in Pyro, y’know? The loose cannon.

And just a little aggressive, a little badass really and it’s the same with Gambit. Gambit’s got a little bit of that. A little showy, a little flashy, arrogant, so kind of Wolverine… They have a dynamic where they love giving each other shit. There’s some good stuff in there."

ON DEADPOOL:"And then Deadpool. I have to be very careful how I talk about Deadpool, because it’s something I’m really excited about in the movie, where it plays and how it plays. I just can’t think right now how I can tell you about it without giving away some really cool ideas!

That’s where David Benioff was really smart, how coolly he brought that character in.

The things I’m thinking about now I don’t want to tell you because the fans will go “Awwww, that’s cool”… Actually some fans might be pissed off but that’s ok. I think they’ll understand why we did it. We took some creative licenses with him."

Creative licences! never music to a fanboys ears! read the full interview over at www.totalfilm.com

Sounds great, can't wait for this movie!

Again, movie is going to be AWESOME! A fight between Wolverine and Gambit? That should be bad-ass! I'm diggin' it.

I like how Hugh likes to stay quiet, but still let out a little peep of information on things. Not specifics, but little hints here and there. Very cool.

Now, as for creative license, I understand that, to a point,BUT, don't be messin' with Deadpool to the point where he's unrecognizable and only shares the name. That would be sorely dissapointing. BUT, I have faith that this movie is going to be badass.

it does..i just hope creative license wont mean no scars and no mask!
Demonslayerwolf
Demonslayerwolf - 12/11/2008, 6:29 PM
I really hope he has the mask, actually the whole suit! That is Deadpool. I just saw the new trailer for Hulk vs Wolverine and the whole idea of Weapon X is cool, and I love that Deadpool is in it, but he looked a little thin to me.
Shaman

Looks thin to make him look like Reynolds in the suit i guess...

Gunsmith, your posts with all capital letters and screaming avatar remind me of "ever-screaming Seinfeld" even when it "wasn't" his intention LOL!

in terms of creative licensing, i dont really see a problem with it. they took major creative licenses with the first two x-men movies, and they were incredible. I also loved pyro as a character, and he was totally different from the comics.

As for deadpools mask: again, think pyro. they completely did away with a costume, and he was (imo) the most interested and multilayered character in the movie. they turned him into a much more interesting character than he was in the comics.

iNsaneMilesy - 12/11/2008, 8:33 PM
Yeh but what your missing is that Deadpools costume is one of the most important aspects of the character. Its not there to hide his identity, it is him, because he hates what he looks like after his entire body was scarred from weapon x "treatments" to cure his cancer. Basically, he's only Deadpool when he has the mask on.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/11/2008, 8:46 PM
exactly. without the scars or the mask they may as well call the character something else. also with pyro, that character was always a fairly one dimentional henchman type so there was room to flesh out his character and ultimately improve it
amjac1
amjac1 - 12/11/2008, 9:10 PM
both fair points. what if they made it a sort of orgins story? afterall, you said the 'treatments' in weapon x, and since this is essentially weapon x he belongs to, could this be leading up to his scarring?

Remember the comic con trailer for x-men origins wolverine, and they showed deadpool unmasked. His face looked normal
Shadowelfz
Shadowelfz - 12/11/2008, 10:50 PM
I really hope they keep the mask and costume for Deadpool. In truth, I always thought he had one of, if not the coolest outfits for any comic book character. I can understand the whole creative licensing thing (look what they did with Joker), but if they removed the scars to showcase Reynolds pretty-boy good looks to attract audiences Im seriously going to be pissed.

Deadpool with mask please.

Deadpool's transformation may take place somewhere during this movie or it may even be postponed for the sequel, who knows...

I am pretty sure more people are excited about the other mutants in this movie more than Wolverine haha - myself included.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/12/2008, 9:26 AM
nah im still more syked to see wolverine in his own movie..and a decent sabertooth than i am about the others. thats probably because we still dont know if they will di justice to the characters..when i know a bit more i prob will be more exited to see deadpool anyway!
Shaman
Shaman - 12/12/2008, 9:48 AM
First off, the trailer showed shit about deadpool! He get's his scars from the Weapon X treatments and this whole movie is about Weapon X. And so it is not only normal but ultimately logical to see him without his scars at first. Near the middle or the end, he will have them and he "probably" will have his mask. It's not going to be for the sequel as it won't have anything to do with Weapon X. It's gonna be the Japan story. If he is going to be fighting off "the hand" along side Wolverine, expect him to already have his uniform with mask from the beginning of the sequel.

yeah i must agree with Insanemilesy......deadpool costume make him how he is. the movie should be great though.

Shaman which trailer are you referencing? I mentioned earlier about the comic con trailer for wolverine orgins and they did show deadpool in it unmasked.

Your prediction makes sense Shaman, especially if Jackman's plans materialize.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/12/2008, 11:21 AM
i hope your right shaman, but creative licence means somethings changed! hopefully just how hes incorporated into the story
IonParallax
IonParallax - 12/12/2008, 11:34 AM
Somethings have changed, but from what i've heard and read, his scars will be there, CGI style, or Jigsaw style, i'm not sure. I'm thinking they're going CGI on that. But i'll get back to you with actual confirmation.

BTW, Ror, you're doing a great job on your site. Looks awesome.

Its believable Deadpool will get his scars from the weapon x project. Like Shaman said there is a trailer & u do see Logan in some type of container but the pic isnt' that good!
ThePrince
ThePrince - 12/12/2008, 5:00 PM
ya i gotta agree with Shaman. I meen ya it showed Deadpool with no mask but all it showed was his throwing a sword. How can anyone tell that his isnt before all the "treatments"? Its probably just going through showcasing all the Weapon X subjects skills and abilitys. 10-1 odds says Wolvie still has the bone claws when they show that DP clip in the movie.

You guys wanna know what creative licensing means? That precious 4th wall is going to stay 100% intact. That's what that means. But... I like Ryan and I don't think he's narcissistic to the point where he won't mask up. Actually I think he'd probably push for the mask. Though they'll probably keep his arms bare and tone down the level of disfigurement caused by weapon-x. SO... all in all I think dead pool will still be pretty much intact.

However... am I the ONLY person upset by gambit? I passed it off it the leaked trailer because it looked a bit blurry but the released still clearly shows gambit's eyes, and they are most certainly not blacked-out. I pray to the living tribunal himself that he's simply hiding his mutation out in public because his blacked out eyes are if more important, they're at least as important as DP's mask. Remember, his eyes are what gave him the name "le diable blanc". It's the whole reason he's an outcast.

crappybumbum - 12/13/2008, 3:02 AM
oh man that's pretty awesome! I can't wait to see the trailer in the day the earth stood still trailer I can't wait for deadpool and Gambit! This movie is gonna rock!!!
IonParallax
IonParallax - 12/13/2008, 7:48 AM
Yes dead, the 4th wall will stay in tact. I highly doubt they are going to break that and still try to make the movie somewhat believable. We can't have Deadpool thinking to himself in pretty little yellow bubbles about how he knows he's a comic book character and in the last issue he kicked so and so arse. Or that he "Wonder's if he still thinks in those little yellow boxes?" "Yup, there they are." That's not going to happen. They're trying to make this a little more realistic, so technically, these people AREN'T comic book characters. So he's not going to allude to that. It is possible, however, that he may come across some kind of surveillance monitor and we get a shot of him looking into that (through the camera) saying something about himself, or the movie perhaps, as if he were speaking to the person monitoring the security cams. I think that would be the only way to do something of that nature without the Ferris Bueller-esque breakage of the 4th wall.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 12/13/2008, 12:29 PM
yeah i dont think the 4rth wall is what he meant about creative licence..id say that was pretty much a given!
Shaman
Shaman - 12/15/2008, 12:26 PM
Sorry DJcheckFat, i was refering to the Comic-con sneak trailer Jackman had brought with him. And so how can we possibly say that Deapool won't have scars or his costume when we saw what... a few seconds of him? He's going to be in a near 2 hour movie.
DeadWebHead
DeadWebHead - 12/16/2008, 1:37 AM
Ion... they could easily make him think that's he's constantly being watched or... make him think that his entire life is... a movie? That would be the proper transition of breaking the fourth wall in a feature.
