X-MEN: Giancarlo Esposito Still Wants To Play Professor X But Hopes To Ditch The Mutant's Wheelchair

The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito has reiterated his desire to play the MCU's Professor X and talks about his hope to ditch the mutant's wheelchair and share the screen with Denzel Washington...

Breaking Bad and The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito is no stranger to playing villains, but when it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the actor hopes to portray a hero with X-Men leader Professor X.

Marvel Studios will reboot the X-Men franchise after Avengers: Secret Wars is released, with the expectation being that a soft reboot will make it so that these characters call Earth-616 home. It's a little too soon to think about casting, of course, but Esposito remains a fan-favourite choice for the role.

The actor has expressed an interest in playing Charles Xavier on several occasions, and in an interview with Fade To Black, Esposito revealed one element of this character he isn't quite so keen on.

"I've given it a cursory glance in my brain, and immediately I go 'Hmm,'" he revealed. "'[It would] be great to play Professor X in some other incarnation that just the wheelchair. Right? Because the physical idea of being in a wheelchair every single day does not appeal to me. I just don't feel that old and I don’t like to sit that much."

"But certainly, we could figure something out maybe," Esposito continued. "Professor X wasn’t always in the wheelchair but that is part of his character development. So, I think about it a little bit but I don’t give it all of my thought because it would have to come to me."

While Xavier's wheelchair is an iconic part of the character's portrayal, it's also something we've seen done on screen for decades now. Recent comics have shown Charles walking again, so there's really no reason a reboot couldn't do the same.

It was also put to the actor that many fans would like to see Denzel Washington play Magento. "I think it would be great," he enthused. "I think it would be great."

Professor X was created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, and is the founder of the X-Men, a team of mutants who fight for peaceful coexistence between mutants and humans. As a mutant himself with powerful telepathic abilities, Xavier is a leading authority on genetics and mutation. He runs Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where he trains young mutants to control their powers.

The character has occasionally headed down the route of being an antagonist, leading the X-Men to move on without him. For example, we've seen Cyclops step up and lead the team in the Professor's absence, a direction the MCU could also choose to head in.

Do you think Esposito would be a good pick for the MCU's Professor X?

@M3T4LL0 - I think he'd be great. I also like the fact that he hates the idea of the wheelchair. Do you think ANYONE would prefer to be in a wheelchair??? Use that uncomfort to benefit the performance...

Understandable. Every time he sees a wheelchair he thinks of Hector Salamanca ringing that bell.

How bout we keep the wheelchair and ditch Giancarlo Esposito…

I have finally reached the point of "IDGAF" about any casting. They are going to do what they want and it does not matter if it fits into the comics so support them if you want or don't.

I’m sure paraplegics don’t like sitting in wheelchairs either, but they don’t have a choice.

Apophis71 - 3/12/2024, 10:20 AM
@elcapitan - This is true, but then an able bodied actor does have a choice so I get one not wanting to be stuck in ones for hours a day every day for the duration of filming, lol.

However from a paraplegic POV there is also an argument as to if they would want characters in wheelchairs to seem totaly fine about being stuck in one and never dealing with how they ended up in it and their struggles with it. As such on paper doing the first class thing of starting out able bodied and ending up disabled, then finding a treatment to allow him to walk which impacts his abilities and forced to make a choice gives added interest to that aspect of the character rather than just the chair being an iconic image.

Unsure if I would want them to go there and do all that again however but there is potentialy interesting other ways, considering modern RL advances, they could play with. As in starting out in the iconic chair and at points tries out neurochip implants and/or exosuits at points if it makes narrative sense to do so even if just short term or for short periods and still mostly in his chair.

@elcapitan - or quadriplegics for that matter
elcapitan
elcapitan - 3/13/2024, 6:17 PM
@Apophis71 - They already did that with Rhodey. They also already dealt with Charles' feelings about being a paraplegic in X-Men Days of Future Past.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 3/13/2024, 8:05 PM
@elcapitan - Why I said plural characters and unsure if I would want them to do the whole first class arc again, but more unsure I'd want them to ignore exploring the whole topic at all in other ways also. IF they will and IF they would satisfactoraly pull it off is another matter obviously but more than just two ways to cover a topic such as paraplegia.

If they do put Xavier in a wheelchair, i think the more pressing question will be why he can't just have whatever Rhodey has.
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 3/12/2024, 10:41 AM
@TheManWithoutFear - Do think it could be worth playing with him having a neurochip, can have a fairly easy narrative thing that the electromagnetic aspects of his powers can interfere with the functions of the chip, short it out, when a story reason to do so. That or the abilities of some other mutants related to tech could be a reason he avoids implants or just prefers/returns to using a chair for whatever narrative reason. That and at times using some form of Stark tech like exosuit at times when appropriate such as building/repairing Cerebro but again can be technobabble reasons why mostly uses a chair.
JuanRGuijarro
JuanRGuijarro - 3/12/2024, 3:18 PM
@Apophis71 - so, the same stupid MCU way of explaining things?
Apophis71
Apophis71 - 3/12/2024, 3:44 PM
@JuanRGuijarro - Nope, didn't say that at all, in fact the opposite if anything that if they do go down the route of at any point using a neurochip or exosuit it has a narrative reason and not just a quick fix thing without ever delving into any fallout of it like they did for War Machine. Also kinda implied that long term the chair would be the norm, anything else only being a thing when there is a strong reason for it to be a thing.

What would be more dumb is never exploring any other tech than a traditional wheelchair when they have previously used suits/chips as mobility aids and such like. However they likely will start out with him in a chair as doubt they will go the Fist Class route of being fully able bodied initialy again even though in terms of giving a character depth exploring how one ends up disabled and how they deal with it is more interesting than he just as and never going to explain why or have it be an obstacle in any way like it is for those IRL stuck in a chair.
