X-MEN: Marvel Studios' Reboot Rumored To Be Based On Joss Whedon And John Cassaday's ASTONISHING X-MEN

We still don't know when Marvel Studios will reboot the X-Men franchise, though it doesn't appear as if it's coming this side of Secret Wars. Now, though, some interesting new details have been revealed.

Marvel Studios acquired the rights to the X-Men franchise in 2017 during the Disney/Fox merger. That was five years ago, and while Kamala Khan was confirmed as the MCU's first known mutant in Ms. Marvel, we're still clearly a long way off from seeing the Uncanny X-Men in this shared world.

As things stand, we don't think the team will assemble in time for Avengers: Secret Wars, but a new rumour shared by Screen Geek claims to reveal some new intel about Marvel Studios' plans.

According to the site (and we're definitely taking this with a pinch of salt for now), Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's Astonishing X-Men will be used as a basis for the eventual reboot. Meant as a course correction for the series after Grant Morrison's bleak New X-Men run, the title saw the team embrace being superheroes again, ditching black leather for colourful costumes.

The roster was made up of Cyclops, Emma Frost, Wolverine, Beast, Shadowcat, and Colossus, while the series also introduced Armor. The main focus was the team trying to stop an alien race from destroying Earth, along with the Danger Room coming to life to kill them and a mutant cure being revealed to the world.

Had Whedon not dropped the ball with Justice League and been surrounded by damaging claims about inappropriate behaviour on the sets of his movies and TV shows, we're sure Marvel Studios would have liked him to write and direct this X-Men reboot. After all, he delivered two hits for them with The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Pitting the MCU's X-Men against a cosmic threat or even a sentient Danger Room would differentiate this movie from what Fox delivered. This roster would also be a breath of fresh air, mixing characters who will be familiar to fans with those who haven't had the chance to shine before.

It's also worth noting that Professor X wasn't part of this iteration of the X-Men.

How would you feel about a movie inspired by Astonishing X-Men?

@0bstreperous - So could doing the original Phoenix Saga properly.

@ObserverIO - at this point- [frick] the Phoenix Saga... for now. As good as the story was, it was a second wind tale at the time, that brought a fresh take on established characters.

Give the 5 core characters great arcs, then create the first good version of the Phoenix saga far down the line, once the gravity has gained proper merit.

I'd love to see a Cyclops X-Men Unlimited #1 story.

Plane crash: Cyclops makes a makeshift visor from his belt in freezing Antarctica. He finds a way using wits. Great story.

For Charles Xavier:
Keep the pace from present to flashbacks. Get the teacher investment into the first students. Show flashes of Professor getting telepathic greetings from Lilandra in his dreams. By the time they meet, they should be in love on a level unknown to man.

So on, so forth...

@VictorAlonzo - To add to your suggestions;

Add Cain Marko (Juggernaut) step-brother to Xavier past instead of the the adopted sister Mystique (cringe).

@VictorAlonzo - Totally agree, but I'd also like to see the Shi'ar and the Starjammers at some point too. A Phoenix Saga in the MCU can be suitably cosmic for once (random Skrulls-not-Skrulls don't count).

@VictorAlonzo - Dude, I loved X-Men Unlimited. #1 was also the first time they hinted at Magneto actually being alive after he was thought dead after being killed by Fabian Cortez.

That Antarctica story was fantastic! I'm going to have to go back and read Unlimited. Such a great series.

Also, way back when Disney bought Fox I thought it might be a cool idea to say the X-Men have actually been a team for a while now, and Jean had already turned into Dark Phienix and died before we ever meet the X-Men. This would give us a chance to see Emma in the powerful telepath spot for something a little different.

I'm not sure that's a good idea anymore. I'm not picky with what they at this point, I just want them to stay far away from Hickman's Island of hippy mutants.

I loved Astonishing X-Men though, so I'm definitely cool with that.

@0bstreperous - The way they introduced the X-Gene in Ms Marvel looks like more people may start gaining powers in the MCU. Maybe this causes panic and the creation of a cure? Which would fall in line with the first Astinishing arc.

Also, wasn't this series the first appearance of S.W.O.R.D.?

@ObserverIO - I want Shi'ar to happen too. I want their empire to be as established as Dunes setup. THEN introduce MARVEL'S X-MEN.

I want the Mutants to have the proper setup to be these larger than life characters, then encounter otherworldly beings that turn the perfect square into a cube.

@CorndogBurglar - @CorndogBurglar -

I once spoke on a way the X-Men can come on the scene:

"It's a long shot, but if they nailed it, my respect would go through the roof.
Cameo Hugh Jackman coming to the end scene of DOFP, returning to what we thought would be a conversation with Patrick Stewart.

Upon entering the door we see the multiverse effect flow across the room, and the camera pans to our new Charles Xavier, then pans back to our new Wolverine. 💲"

Next scene, the "Mutants" appear during the snap, being that they were hidden the entire time through powerful telepathy. The humans had no idea about mutants, simply because they were made to forget them via cerebro. Unfortunately, that all changed due to Charles being caught in the snap. New Mission: Gather the remaining mutants and try to resolve the Thanos conflict undetected, while saving the remaining people when possible.

Lol, that message was actually for you too 😆!

I know the logical thing to say would be "Hey that's out of chronological order!".

True. So why don't we make Wolverines return happen between Thanos snap and the muliverse mix-up.

That way, we have a version of Wolverine available during Captain America's WWII heyday, a version returning after the blip, and an absent Wolverine during the present to set up the original 5. Am I still making sense here? It's almost 🐑 🐏 🐑 time.

@CorndogBurglar - yes, I believe you’re right about S.W.O.R.D. I liked that introduction better than the WandaVision one, but I’m still glad we have S.W.O.R.D. in the MCU

I don't believe this for a second, unless the inspiration is minimal. I'm hoping the association is with dropping the black uniforms for colorful costumes and not with that weak ass roster or the mutant cure story line.
I like the cat beast design tho

Whedon's personal problems aside, this run of X-Men is one of my favorites ever. So hopefully that's true. Especially the first volume of this run is magnificent.

Hickman's run however, which was rumored to be adapted to MCU, started off well but fell off so hard. I got bored quickly after the extremely enjoyable HoX/Pox.

Another run they can consider is the Lee and Claremont collaboration from 1991, which is just chef's kiss.

Wasn't a huge fan of Whedons run, it was decent but nothing to write home about. I have to disagree that this is the direction they are going. In fact if you go read Hickmans final X-men issue #21, it is suggested that Feige will base the MCU version on Hickmans version.

Not really feeling another invasion from outer space. I feel like that type of story line has been done to death in films and comics in general. I'm not really feeling the team for the first outing either.

But I'll be happy to be proven wrong though if this indeed turns out to be true. All I really hope for is a solid X-Men film with the characters being true to their comicbook personalities. I don't need them to be 100% comic accurate. I'd just like to see them embody what we all know and love about them.
TheManWithoutFear
TheManWithoutFear - 9/21/2022, 6:42 AM
This has to be bogus. Emma Frost without any Hellfire/villain history? Kitty at the same time as Cyclops? Colossus being introduced as the destroyer of the breakworld??

I just want the original 5 vs comic-accurate sentinels.

@TheManWithoutFear - A combination of the original five and Giant-Size X-Men # 1. I would be fine with acknowledging the original 5 as the original 5 but pickup with adding the new members. Let’s have Scott as
an actual tactical and team leader and not a side character. I would be fine with Wolverine appearing in a later film and never have this team be Wolverine and the X-Men. X-Men should always be treated as an ensemble, not focusing on one character. That’s fine to happen occasionally in a weekly tv show or comic (even a run of comic stories), but not a feature film. Of course this is all my humble opinion.
