Following last year's San Diego Comic-Con, we'd expected X-Men '97 to hit Disney+ later this year. Unfortunately, it's become apparent in recent months that won't happen, and with Marvel Studios skipping this weekend's event...well, don't expect an update any time soon!
However, with merchandise trickling into stores, we've recently been able to share a few updates about the X-Men: The Animated Series follow-up. A reliable social media scooper has also weighed in today (via Toonado.com), addressing that show's big cliffhanger.
Much has been said about Professor X being missing when X-Men '97 begins, hence why Magneto puts his evildoing ways behind him and agrees to help lead the mutant team. Well, Charles Xavier has supposedly recovered from the injuries which led to him being taken into outer space by the Shi'ar Empire.
Romantically involved with Empress Lilandra when the sequel series begins, it sounds like the Professor will don some Shi'ar armour. That potentially means he'll be seeing quite a bit more action here than when we last saw him.
A lot of love has gone into doing these characters justice in the revival, and Head Writer Beau DeMayo previously revealed what he looked for in the show's creative team.
"My general rule was you had to be a fan. No questions," he revealed. "I've been on [a] show, namely '[The] Witcher,' where some of the writers were not or actively disliked the books and games even actively mocking the source material."
"It's a recipe for disaster and bad morale. Fandom as a litmus test checks egos and makes all the long nights worth it." DeMayo would go on to add that, "you have to respect the work before you're allowed to add to its legacy."
Be sure to keep checking back here for more on X-Men '97 as we have it.
