Review Opinion

X-Men: Days of Future Past is not the X-Men movie we deserve, but the one we need. Yes, I am aware I took that from The Dark knight but let me explain how it applies to this review.  Days of Future Past is a good movie, in my opinion it is as good as  First Class and the best x-men movie since X2. It works on a lot of levels, it has an excellent main cast (side cast is wasted,) it combines aspects of action, sci-fi (some of it is pretty farfetched) and drama well, but it is not very self-contained and relies a lot on a nostalgia factor. Nostalgia is where downside lies; as a fan you are literally asked to ignore what has come before it, while at the same time, that which you are being asked to ignore is being referenced.

This movie did go to great efforts to correct a lot of past mistakes; perhaps it should have been called X-Men: Ways to fix a Franchise’s Past, because it really doesn’t fix any continuity issues created from the past movies, as a matter of a fact it doesn’t really addresses any inconsistencies, it manages to create new ones and then it hits a reset switch so you don’t have to ever have to think about whether or not it’s consistent with what came before.

And this is where my initial point about X-Men: Days of Future Past, Yes it is a good film, not the X-Men movie we deserve, but the one we need. Days of Future Past works best as a sendoff to the films that came before it, but the period piece that I was hoping for was overshadowed by the nostalgia, the need for the high profile stars to have enough screen time(too much Wolverine for my taste), the under usage of supporting characters and the need hit that reset switch.

I recommend anyone who is a CBM fan to check this movie out, it is a very good movie in spite of its flaws and it leaves you hoping that X-Men: Apocalypse will be the movie X-men fans deserve. I give this movie a

I've been searching CBM to see if any of the DOFP reviews would be real about this thing, and yours comes closest so far. The movie's got some problems, and it looks like you're the only one who will acknowledge it. Thank you

Yw @ Kall, great read!

I agree with ya, its no 5 out of 5, A+ movie that's for sure, only an idiot would grade it that.

B+ is perfect.

Still doesn't touch Winter Soldier in my book and I'm hoping GOTG will be that much better too, its gotta be!

I'll give something to FOX, at least they woke up a bit, trying to change at least some of their [frick]ed up X-continuity... should have gone back further in my book tho lol.

X-Men: Ways to fix a Franchise’s Past = Lol I liked that :p

Excellent review, not filled with one sidedness. Gave the positives and negatives, also well written.

I just seen the movie last night and I thought the exact same thing. If you're just there to see Wolverine slice stuff then you'll be dissapointed. But if you're there because you expect this movie to set up X-Men as a big franchise in the future you have come to the right movie.

X-Men fans complained and were finally heard. Its the closest Fox has come to an X-Men comic book...it makes imagining what Apocalypse will look like as a film enjoyable.
DOFP has 3 minor ticks and mid major tick for me:
The Wolverine after credit scene- whats the point? it clearly isn't the Dystopian future when they confront Logan at the airport and how exactly does Logan get metal claws back?

The Last Stand- I needed explanation as to why Charles is alive and still wheel chair bound.

Did they mean to erase X1,X2 also as canon because they did?

The movie was 5 star until the Washington DC showdown- you have 8 Sentinels to serve up to the X-Men like Chitauri to the Avengers. I wanted to see the 70s mutants serve up a beat down as a counter to the time loop future where the Sentinels continuously murdered the X-Men. I needed at minimum Quicksilver and Havoc to arrive and serve ass whippage.

The acting was top notch. Halle Berry didn't annoy me. I cried like the girl that I am when Logan woke up to a school full of happy kids and finally KITTY AND COLOSSUS TOGETHER the way it is supposed to be.

4/5 Stars possibly 4.5 but its the best X-Men film made to date and easily- EASILY a top ten all time COMIC BOOK MOVIE. Its better than Watchmen, its better than 2 of Nolan's Batman films and its better then all but 3 MCU films. It OBVIOUSLY is better than EVERY SPIDER-MAN MOVIE EVER and EVERY SUPERMAN MOVIE EVER.
Now off to see it for a 4th time because it deserves my money.

Great write up and review. Never be afraid to voice. Not everyone is going to like the same movies. I'm still confused as to how TASM 2 is not universally recognized as crap.

Oh and Mr Singer,
The ship is now facing the right direction- now X-Men Apocalypse: The Big Man and the 4 Horsemen vs The X-Men DONE. No need to over cook the gravy just serve that up and we'll be there in theaters opening night.

I think this movie deserves more praise than its getting in this review. this wasnt just a movie made to fix the issues brought along from the previous movies. This movie had a good script, a good story, great acting (not for once wdid i see the famous actors, i saw the characters), it had great emotion (in the future i knew that the x-men will die and will be alive at the end but when storm and everyone actually die, i am heartbroken), the movie had great visual effects, great editing (which was lacking in tasm2 and thus failed). The editing was so good that when they shifted from past to future to past, I wasnt taken away from the ongoing action and story. A lot of accredited reviewers are throwing the oscar buzz for the performances of fassbender and mcavoy. I sure hope they get at least recognition.

@remembertheking

Its a movie acted so well that someone if not the film better be recognized come Oscar time. McAvoy BROUGHT HIS A GAME as did Fassbender, Lawrence and Jackman. Story telling was fantastic, editing seamless. Great set pieces. And while slightly very slightly under used Peter Dinklage was still BOSS.

You sir are absolutely on point with your post

@alfredo
Its dead even with Avengers and Winter Soldier...better than the rest of the MCU movies. At first I thought it was even with Iron Man but no DOFP is better. Not by much. If it had the ingredients I listed then maybe it jumps past the other 2 but it was a missed opportunity for Havoc to show in DC with his brother Scott and help Beast and Logan and Quicksilver already proved to be the fastest thing on the planet he could have gotten to DC as soon as he saw Magneto on tv. Its a bit nitpicky but I waited ALL this time for X-Men vs Sentinels and I got Sentinels murdering X-Men...I needed the uplifting counter point of the 70s group smashing thru those Sentinels.
And that's me forgiving the Logan having metal again in the future, Xavier's resurrection unexplained, Kitty's unexplained ability(to the general audience- comic nerds like me already are schooled) and it felt like a missed opportunity to build on the fact that Trask a little person is so dead set against people born different- there was some layers to be mined there.
But damn 4/5 or 4.5/5 Stars isn't anything to sneeze at. It raised the bar and Singer has to now jump over his own bar for APOCALYPSE.

i love the movie and all...BUT...

i wonder if the old charles and erik AND logan and storm..did they come from OUR present day period?? cuz the time where iceman's leading the team seems TOO futuristic. and what i didn't see and think SHOULD be seen is wolverine's reaction to the fact that Prof. X's still ALIVE!!! i mean, after seeing his ol' mentor evaporated in Last Stand, shouldn't he be SHOCKED to see him 'whole' again and alive..?? and yeah..if the 4 do exist in the same time period as Iceman & his team, how'd THAT happen, after the end credit scene of last year's The Wolverine, which still happens in present day..?? confused..?? me TOO.

but, other than that...i think the movie works.
