Bond 23 Likely to Go to Sony or Paramount For Distribution

Now that Bond 23 has been given a release date, the competition has begun on who will pick up the film's distribution rights, and according to The Hollywood Reporter the victor will either be Sony or Paramount.

Some highlights from the article:

"At this point, the lead player would appear to be Paramount Pictures, which--thanks to a close relationship between the studio's top brass and new MGM co-chairmen Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum--has informally gotten a first crack at the negotiation. The other contender is Sony Pictures, which successfully released the last two Bond films and is said to be on good terms with the Broccoli family, owner of the Bond rights. Despite that, a knowledgeable source says the Broccolis have approved Paramount as a prospective distributor and that preliminary talks have begun."

"...A source with knowledge of Paramount's thinking says the studio's position is that the Bond franchise is very attractive but not "life-changing." Obviously that is the posture that any studio would take heading into a negotiation but in this case it is also true. The last two Bond films starring Daniel Craig as Agent 007 (2006's Casino Royale and 2008's Quantum of Solace)each have grossed about $600 million worldwide, but given the cost and profit participations to the Broccoli family and others, the movies do not throw off profit on the order of a Transformers or Iron Man. On the other hand, Marvel now belongs to Disney so Paramount could use a new, guaranteed tentpole. Sony... also could use another tentpole--though it's unclear whether the studio would be interested in distributing other MGM product. The Broccoli family is assumed by many observers to be well disposed toward Sony and co-chairman Amy Pascal, who oversaw the successful reboot of the Bond franchise with Craig. Sources say Sony was open-handed, spending $200 million on the latest film and nearly as much to market it worldwide."

The battle for Bond begins!

Wow, I have to say It'l just feel wrong for me to watch a bond film without that MGM logo at the beginning. Especially if its made by Fox and they make Bond Jason Statham.

The MGM logo would still be there, like it was on Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, it's just that it would be followed by either the Sony or Paramount logos.

@Edgross Well At the beginning of casino royale the sony pictures logo of the lady holding the torch did follow the mgm logo lol Plus I think they are better suited with son handling the movie since they paid for the last two being made and if you look at the movies all of the gear they are using is sony based lol

Personally, I want Sony to get it. However, I think Paramount will because now they need another several hundred million dollar film franchise on their hands, and is probably willing to pay a bit more to get the rights. Great find!

The DVDs for the last two movies were distributed by Sony.

Part of the reason Sony did the last two was part of their deal with MGM for the Spiderman rights. So I think they should stick with Sony as a distributor, Paramount can stick to Transformers and other stuff.

they will stick with who evers willing to pay more simple, but sony will probably end up getting since they part funded the last two or did they distribute it. Hopefully the movie doesn't get plagued by any other problems Daniel Craig is not getting any younger and I doubt he's going to wait for ever
