With a May 21, 2021 release date already set for John Wick: Chapter 4, it's fair to assume Keanu Reeves and the creative teams are already deep into preparation on the highly anticipated sequel. While there's no director attached just yet, it sounds like we may be getting more news on that front in the very near future.
During my recent conversation with director Chad Stahelski, he spoke about the possibility of returning to helm Chapter 4, and while he wasn't able to say whether or not he'd be back in the director's chair, he was able to confirm that he'd definitely be involved with production, in one capacity or another.
He also spoke about his approach to a sequel and whether or not fans could see more Matrix castmates, like Carrie-Anne Moss, show up in future installments.

ROHAN: Chris McQuarrie has said in the past that he always feels bad for the next director in the Mission: Impossible series, even though he’s really just talking about himself since he's the director of 7 and 8. He just likes to think of a sequel as an entirely new film, not a continuation, and approach it as a slightly different filmmaker.
Do you have a similar mindset when you signed on for Chapter 2 and for Parabellum? And, hopefully for Chapter 4?
CHAD STAHELSKI: Yeah, I don't know if I go that out of body, but I agree with Chris quite a bit. I've met him a few times, he's a great director. I really love how he looks at things, he's really great looking at things from different perspectives, which probably explains his answer to you. For me, just coming from such a competitive background, with combative sports, martial arts and just trying to work your way through the Hollywood ranks, I think the only way to really look at it is, it's never just you, - I mean, to Chris's note, you just try to be better than you were on the last one. So, yes, hopefully, at least in my career, if you look at all three John Wicks and I feel each one has gotten better in a lot of ways and hopefully you can see that. The directing is, I don't know if it’s better or worse, but definitely evolved in trying different things and going. So, I would pretty much agree with Chris that, yeah, I don't want to be the same director I was, I don’t want to fall into that comfort zone, I want to expand and hopefully the films I choose will allow me to expand.
I do approach each film, not like a sequel, I mean, we've never approached it like a sequel. We've approached each one as its own individual thing and, you know, honestly, we look at Chapter 2 as competition. When we're doing number three, it's like “screw those guys, we can do better.” Meanwhile, it was us guys, you know, but every department head tried to do better than they did and that's the right team to have.
ROHAN: Yeah, you guys killed it.
So, will you be back for Chapter 4? Or is it too early to say anything on that? I know the release date is out.
CHAD: I think the John Wick family - You know, it's a little early to say, and I would hate to lead you astray, but it's a project that I will remain involved in, in some capacity, probably till my career is long over, so that's good.
ROHAN: The end of the film sees Keanu Reeves and Laurence Fishburne back on the same side, so that made me think - could we ever see Carrie-Anne Moss make an appearance down the line? To complete the iconic Matrix trio?
CHAD: You know, Keanu and I talk a lot about where we want to go. We didn't finish John Wick 3 and have this great big plan of how to go into Chapter 4. It's something we're constantly thinking about and we try not to force things. I certainly don't want to include a cast member to try to get somebody in as a gag and work a story around that.
If we create these great characters and you know, in my head, it makes sense to put Carrie-Anne in there or Hugo Weaving or any of our Matrix compadres, and it works and if they're interested, that’s always a plus because they're friends and I think they're all excellent performers. So it's yet-to-be-seen.
