Johnny Depp and Gore Verbinski to Reteam on Lone Ranger

Deadline.com is offering up an exclusive report confirming the reuniting of Johnny Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy director Gore Verbinski on The Lone Ranger, in which Depp will portray Tonto.

One of the downsides of Depp expressing interest in so many different projects is that it creates a backlog that can years to navigate. For instance, Dark Shadows, which has been in the works for several years now, is finally getting in front of the cameras in April. Now it looks like The Lone Ranger is moving up in line.

Writes Deadline, "When we last left this project, Pirates of the Caribbean 1-3 director Gore Verbinski was getting serious about saddling up for The Lone Ranger, the Disney pic that has Jerry Bruckheimer producing with Johnny Depp playing Tonto. Now we've learned that Disney just locked in the helmer. Still no word on when the film will begin production or who'll play the Lone Ranger."

I think a while ago they were saying they want Clooney for the Ranger. Clooney/Depp is a potentially inspired pairing.

A 50 year old Tonto?I wish the actor they chose were 10-15 years younger.I've said it before and I'll say it again.Johnny Depp can't play every damn character.I certainly can't see him play a tough scrapper like Tonto. He more adept at playing off the wall, slightly comic type characters.Find someone else.

If Depp is playing Tonto, they might as well retitle the movie Tonto and the Lone Ranger, cuz there's no way Depp is being given less screen time.

gonna throw my vote in here too, Depp is a high quality actor but not for ANY role, and I'm not seeing him at all as Tonto in a fast-paced, amazing action / adventure Lone Ranger flick. I'm a big fan of the property and of him too, but not together. blah, I hope I'm proven wrong.

@stopdropandroll - i think Depp would definitely give up screen time for a role he wanted and a price he liked... who wouldn't?

@Mstargel. I think that's true about Depp. My comment is directed more at the producers/studio and director of the movie wanting him to have the greater screen role and not Depp himself.

They would have to get a big name actor to place alongside him. At least that would give equal screen time.

Tonto should be portrayed similar to Marc Dacascos' character in Brotherhood of the Wolf. That would be cool.

weneedrevelation, I don't think CBM should strictly mean movies/TV based on comic books. It should also include any project about a superhero or any project in the genre.

The Cape or No Ordinary family aren't based on comic books, but they involve superheroes and I want to see them covered on the site.

Same goes for shows like Fringe, Supernatural or True Blood. They don't feature superheroes, but they are sci-fi/fantasy shows. They're similar to comic books. They should be covered, as well.

Here's a thought: maybe Tonto should be played by an ACTUAL NATIVE AMERICAN! I don't know who is out there now but sticking every good white guy actor in a film is not always the best idea. Wes Studi and Graham Greene are great actors and I'm sure there are more Native American Actors waiting that have not gotten their chance. Also, he is too old. The point of the Lone Ranger is that he was a young man eager to join the Texas Rangers and they all get slaughtered and Tonto saves him. They were not almost 50 years old and Tonto was not white.

@TonyPaintball, Depp does have Indian in him, I believe it's Cherokee, not sure how much neither, but he does have it. He may not have 100%, but I personally want an actor who has the ability to act. We're just lucky enough to have both lineage and acting ability. I can't wait Holidays 2012.

I don't know how I feel about this. I am a big Lone Ranger fan, and I love the comic by Dynamite, and I always wanted to make a Lone Ranger film myself.

I like Verbinski, and he did a good job on the Pirates series, but I want him to move on from theses kinds of films. I don't want Lone Ranger to fell like Pirates of the Carribean in the west. They should be done diffrent, and I wish they would get a diffrent director to bring a diffrent take to the genre and characters.
I would have loved to have seen this film directed by...
Jim Sheridan (My Left Foot, the Boxer, Brothers),
Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding)
Rian Johnson (Brick, the Brothers Bloom)
Marc Forster (Quantum of Solace, Finding Neverland, Monster Ball, Stranger then Fiction)

Any of theses directors should be interesting choices to helm a big summer western blockbuster, mainly because they are directors known for their character moments and would each bring diffrent ideas and takes to the series, and not the same thing we have seen. Give us something unexpected.

I like the idea of Johnny Depp playing Tonto, espically if they model him after him in the Dynamite comic, and cool to see him as the sidekick. Hopefully he doesn't overshadow the hero, and this is very much like the first Superman movie, with big names in the supporting roles and give them more dimmension.

As for the Lone Ranger himself, I would love to see James Roday, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Matt Smith, Zachary Levi, or George Clooney, because all of theses actors have potential and charm, but also can bring us a new kind of hero, and would be great to see any of them in a big blockbuster.

I just really want to see the Lone Ranger done well and the comic is so incredible, and the old show has such a charm to it and a movie has a lot of potential.

YES!!!! Tonto indeed because of his Native American background. Awesome. Way to go bringing a minority role upfront to the center stage for once. Maybe they'll get Jack Black as the Lone Ranger, LOL A carbon Copy of what they're doing with the Green Hornet. They Minority role is Way more intersting than the lead. (Hint, Hint- Seth Rogan) LOL

are you fukin kiddin me? DEPP as TONTO? thats like casting Brad Pitt as the lead in a Bruce Lee Bio pic. I like Depp as an actor but TONTO is a pure bred native american not a half breed theyre gonna set films back 50 yrs if they cast him they ARE a lot of native american actors that would make a great TONTO heck u can even cast an unknown as the RANGERS partner. But dont give DEPP the role and besides its called The Lone Ranger if hes cast it will take attention away form the lead which is not cool.

Adam Beach as Tonto!

I have to echo many others here. Depp is an excellent actor but it is a sad day that he is cast for a role that should go to an actual Native American...not someone who has some Cherokee blood in him. Hell, I would qualify then. Add in the age factor... uggh. I grew up watching the Lone Ranger and this disappoints me more than any other casting out there. The role should go to an Eddie Spears or Adam Beach. :-(

Eh, don't love it, don't hate it. I really only have two concerns about this; 1) that if they DO use Depp, Tonto NOT be made the main character - he is still and always secondary to the man in the mask, the titular hero, no matter WHO portrays him, and 2) that they NEVER refer to Tonto as "Native American."

That Dynamite Lone Ranger comic is only one of the more recent runs. The Lone Ranger has had about a gazillion comic runs over the years.

I call shenanigans on the whole idea of casting Depp in a role that should go to a full-blooded American Indian. Is this casting meant to infer that there are no talented Indian actors in the world? I can't believe that. Find me any reasonably-sized group of people and there will be at least a few of them with acting talent. If the ranks of qualified Indian actors are too thin, put out a casting call and find an unknown. The perfect Tonto is out there, but Depp ain't it.

Besides, Tonto is not the quirky eccentric that Depp likes to play, nor is he the main focus of the story. I can't see Depp willing to be the sidekick while someone else is getting all the attention, all the lines, and all the screen time.
