Thanks to the variety of directors that have worked with superstar Tom Cruise on the Mission: Impossible franchise, each film has carried with it a distinct style reflective of the director helming the project, from Brian De Palma to John Woo to J.J. Abrams and most recently to Brad Bird. Now, it's the latest director, Chris McQuarrie, who will be adding his own personal touch, with a bit of a retro twist, to the upcoming sequel.

In an extensive Twitter Q&A session, conducted by McQuarrie earlier today, he was fairly candid while discussing the highly anticipated action sequel and revealing a ton of new details in the process. Here are a few of the highlights:

  • The first official teaser trailer will be arriving very soon as will the film's official name, poster, and the first promotional photos of the cast.
  • The finale did not have to be reshot, it just had to be prepped. They are currently shooting it as we speak.
  • Both Paula Patton (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) and Maggie Q (Mission: Impossible 3) were asked to return, but unfortunately were unavailable.
  • The film will pay homage to the original television series and have a bit of an "old-school" vibe throughout.
  • Jeremy Renner (The Avengers) & Ving Rhames (Mission: Impossible 1-4) will have expanded roles compared to the last outing, and Simon Pegg (Star Trek) will be getting his hands dirty.
  • Sean Harris (Prometheus) will be playing the film's villain.
  • McQuarrie broke his own personal record for footage recorded.
  • And what should be no surprise to anyone, Tom Cruise & Jeremy Renner are both very proficient when it comes to action scenes.
Check out the full recap below:

Mission: Impossible 5 will feature:
Director: Christopher McQuarrie
Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt
Jeremy Renner as William Brandt
Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn
Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell
Alec Baldwin as the Head of the CIA
Rebecca Ferguson
Sean Harris
Simon McBurney
Zhang Jingchu

Mission: Impossible 5 lights the fuse July 31

Love how each director puts their own spin on this franchise.

Sucks that those actresses couldn't make their schedules work. :(

Never been a fan of Cruise, but I've always loved these films. Sometimes it's hard to for me to buy him, such a small guy, as an action star, but he does it well

Shame Paula was unavailable. She was one of the many highlights of Protocol. Maybe next time if there is one

I hope Tom Cruise rebounds with this movie after the last 3 turkeys he had (financially speaking). The guy is a great lead actor and he always gives a commited performance with his trademark humour and charm. Really looking forward to this movie.

Also, Tom should do less action movies and more drama films. Recently rewatched Magnolia and Born on the Fourth of July and he is really good on those.

Waiit, so is the release date really July? And they are still filming?? Is this... usual I havent ever seen any movie that was being filmed so close to the release date, without any poster, trailer, and such a short time to edit the movie, adding the music and promote. This got me worried

1 was muddled and boring, 2 was overwrought and silly. 3 and 4 felt more how I thought these movies should feel. I hope 5 rounds out a trilogy of good M:I flicks.

Interestingly, STAR TREK has its own "good" trilogy: 2, 3, and 4, and it, like M:I3, starts with the hero(es) coming out of retirement.

I like how the movie will have an old school nod to the Television series. Ghost Protocal at the end of the film referenced "Syndicate" and i'm optimistic it'll be in MI 5.

I can't wait for MI 5.
