The 3D wave is what it is, and in realty it's the movie making mega studios last ditch effort to turn movie going revenue around into positive marks. It's no secret the economy is deeper in the toilet then it has been before and with no new original ideas being churned out of Hollywood, 3D is a last ditch effort to introduce a 'New' movie experience to the public.
You can either like it or not, but that is entirely a different article. The news today comes from the land of Sony. Sony execs are planning to release 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs' in Blu-ray 3D this summer along with a few other titles. If that does well the studio will most likely begin (I am guessing the process is well underway) up converting older titles, not for theatrical release, but to help market their new 3D TV's. Yep you guessed it, titles like Spider-Man, Ghostbusters, and District 9.
Here is why I believe this process is well underway. Sony execs say: “sales from 3D products without content will reach 1 trillion ($15.5 billion) in the year to March 2013.” Sony has even partnered up with Discovery Communications and Imax to start a 3D dedicated television channel in 2011. If it dont make dollars then it dont make cents.
So if you got the money and those 3D glasses don't bother you, in a couple years you could bring the 3D experience out of the theater and into your home.
