All I can say is wow! First, Batman is just more interesting and convincing in his prowess when he is solo. It is difficult to believe that this orphan who makes himself into the ultimate weapon sans super powers would take on a kid, and make him into an apprentice. This story ties it up nicely. Add in that if you pay attention to the comics or magazines like “Wizard” that do it for you, the ending is not a surprise.
Despite knowing the entire story, this DVD is terrific. The characterization is spot on. You get the Black Mask, Red Hood, the Joker, Nightwing, the second Robin, Alfred, Comm. Gordon, and a Riddler cameo. There are no spoilers here.
The Joker blends the “Batman: TAS” and a bit of
The Dark Knight’s. He is maniacal, murderous, and adds a hint of comedy. Despite not being the central nemesis, his presence is felt throughout.
The Red Hood is portrayed as a wanna-be Batman with no compunctions regarding terror and murderous violence. His skills and tools (guns aside) closely mock Bruce’s designs. If you haven’t read the books, it’s still fun wondering if this animated tale might have an extra twist. CBM website’s favorite Jensen Ackles voices the Hood with the right mix of youth, arrogance, and rebellion.
Nightwing’s appearance borders on being a cameo. His presence is purely to show Batman’s success. If they ever tie in any of these DVD’s, this version may well be the one to take over if Bruce’s back is ever broken or he goes lost in time.
Lastly, the Batman. He is voiced by our modern day Capt. Pike, Bruce Greenwood. Though coincidental in name, he was obviously picked due to the bit of gravel in his tone and orally elder from both the Hood and Nightwing. He is second to the standard bearer: Kevin Conroy. The Batman is haunted by the Hood and his one self-determined failure.
Finally, the animation is great. It’s dark without being morbid while maintaining colors to make the city alive and the costumes distinct. All the favorite gadgets and vehicles make appearances, too.
This is definitely the top tier of DC’s animated films. And just a reminder, it is appropriately rated PG-13. Whichever outlet you use, rent this one fast! It’s fun as a rollercoaster. Or for some of us, a spinning ride.
