'BEWARE THE BATMAN' Creators On Why You Should Watch

If you liked "Young Justice" and "Green Lantern: The Animated Series" then give "Beware the Batman" a shot this Saturday at 10 AM on Cartoon Network's DC Nation programming block.

Cartoons today seem like they're all aiming for the silly slapstick tone of an "Adventure Time" or "Ultimate Spider-Man." You don't see too many serious storytelling approaches to animation anymore like "Batman: The Animated Series" or "Justice League." Or when you do, like the recent "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" or "Young Justice," the shows rarely survive to see a third season. Heck, some are lucky to even make it through their first! It's for that reason alone why I have high hopes for "Beware the Batman" which premieres this Saturday on Cartoon Network (10 AM). There's absolutely nothing wrong with humor in animation, far from it. However, a sincere, reality structured animation program amidst all of the Acme xeroxes would make for a nice palate cleanser; fruit between cheese cubes if you will. Below, "Beware the Batman" producers Glen Murakami and Mitch Watson do their best to tell you why you should be watching their show alongside me this Saturday.

Said Watson, "To be perfectly frank with you, the action genre of television cartoons right now is sort of on the verge of extinction, so I’m really hoping that if people like Young Justice and people liked Green Lantern, that they’re gonna give this show a chance, because quite honestly, if they don’t go for this kind of show… and you know what? If they don’t like it, they don’t like it, but give the show a chance, because we really set out to make something that was goona appeal to both fans and new people, and to pull back in the Green Lantern and the Young Justice people."

Murakami also acknowledged the fact that cartoon deity Bruce Timm is not involved. "I worked on those shows," he disclosed. He went on to add, "We do have people working on the show who have worked on the shows, so we do have experience working on those types of shows."

There's a bit more from the duo over at ScreenRant so be sure to click the source link below to read all the quotes from Watson and Murakami. And for heaven's sake, tune in this Saturday at 10 AM on Cartoon Network. Don't show up late to the party then wonder why it's being cancelled à la "Green Lantern: The Animated Series".

"Part of Cartoon Network's DC Nation Block, 'Beware the Batman," is a CGI animated program debuting on July 13th at 10 AM. The series follows the exploits of Batman, Alfred and Katana as they battle evil-doers such as Anarky, Magpie, Ra's al Ghul, Tobias Whale, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad, Humpty Dumpty, King Kraken, Axel Alex, and Ten-Eyed Man. Anarky will be the primary antagonist of the first season. The series producers have stated that Batman is in the early stages of his career in maybe year five or six. Alfred is characterized as a MI6, Sean Connery - James Bond type retired secret agent who once possessed physical skills on par with Batman during his prime but now he's in his 60s. Sam Register serves as executive producer with Glen Murakami and Mitch Watson handling the finer details as producers. Sam Liu, Rick Morales and Curt Geda will direct individual episodes."

Why should we watch? "Get it while you can, because you never know when it'll be cancelled."

I like Ultimate Spider Man, but I LOVED Young Justice and A:EMH. The replacement Avengers show sucks as far as I'm concerned. Between all this nonsense and the possible cancellation of Tron: Legacy I've become disillusioned with animation these days. I will NOT be watching the new Batman show. In fact, I may not watch another DC animated series until they finish one entirely (like JL/U), and then just marathon it. Thank goodness for decent DC animated movies.

And as for the list of villains shown above: Really? I used to be a big DC fan, and I have no idea who most of those guys are. They all sound like I'd expect to see them in the 60's Batman TV show, not villains I'd take seriously. This whole thing just screams "Joke!"

A man in a pig mask, a frog, and a woman with white hair.

I guess they're trying to build up Batman's lesser known villains.

Where's the woman with the hole through her forehead?

Tron Uprising was amazing.
It didn't coddle the audience or treat them like infants.

Maybe it's too much for Disney XD.

We'll get a lighter version some time when the next movie comes out.

@batesmotel, but is that particular timeslot really the cause for failure? Look at Nickelodeon. Ninja Turtles, Legend of Korra and Spongebob Squarepants are probably the 3 highest rated kids animated shows on TV, and they are/were scheduled only a half hour/hour after Young Justice.

I don't think a Saturday morning timeslot is really going to be responsible for a show failing.

@thefirstavenger97, Alfred almost always has a gun when he's defending the Manor or the Batcave. So why would the character having a gun in the show lose you?

this doesn't really look good to me. the animation reminds me of reboot. i loved that show but come on this is 2013. the graphics shouldn't look like they are from the 90's.

He does have a point when he talks about how much people initially said they hated Teen Titans and Batman Beyond.
Fans have done this every single time regarding any DC animated series that came after Superman, save for Justice League.

You had people saying how stupid it was to have a Batman in the future before Batman Beyond began and that went on to become one of the most popular DCAU shows. People complained about how silly Teen Titans appeared and while I never got on board, it also became a favorite. People hated The Batman for several reasons, and it went on to develop a solid fanbase and became one of the longest running DC animated series. People didn't like L.O.S.H. because some felt it was too "kiddy", they thought Brave and the Bold was too silly, they didn't like Young Justice even before it aired because it wasn't based on the comics or because it featured teens and they didn't initially like Green Lantern due to the animation style and because they thought it would be solely aimed at kids.

It happens every time. Even though these shows almost always turn out to be well-liked by a good percentage of the audience and gain a following, for some reason some fans always dislike the shows before they even air.

I mean, when it comes down to it, how many DC animated shows have their been that were truly awful? I'm not talking about shows you didn't like for whatever reason, but shows that were explicitly bad? I didn't really like Teen Titans or The Batman, but it wasn't because they were poor shows. They just weren't for me. But a lot of people loved them. They were both so popular they lasted 5 seasons. Few DC animated shows have lasted that long.

So given their track record for continuously producing well-recieve4d shows for over 20 years, why do some fans constantly assume these shows will be bad before they debut, only to be proven wrong again and again?

The show is great! Early review are in and it's a good show. Please check worlds finest online and other DC animated sites.

And nicely stated Tazmaniak. EVERY DC show has been fantastic, with this being no different.

The time slot kills it. It needs to be an evening show.

Sooo, I should watch it b/c if I don't it'll get cancelled? That's the worst reason. That says too me he couldn't come up with anything actually GOOD about the SHOW. What a ridiculous thing for a producer to say.

Here's why I won't watch it: The designs are atrocious, yet still not as bad as the animation I've seen thus far; Alfred is a kick-ass, gun-toting right-hand man, and you're desperately attempting to get girls to watch by making Katana his sidekick...when you could've just used a slightly younger Batgirl and nobody would've cared. Ohh, wait, I see, Katana also fills the need for a minority character. Got it.

No thanks, WB!

Ill give the show a chance of course.... But some of us like GL the animated series and Young Justice BECAUSE it wasn't just another batman show. Batman is great, but damn he is getting old and overused.
GL was something new.
But i do see his point about these kinds of shows going extinct.

I might give it a shot but I am just not a Batman guy at all really. Batman has to be done REALLY freakin well for me to care at all about him. Batman: TAS, Batman Beyond, and Batman/Superman adventures made solo Batman watchable. But it takes something on that level for me to invest in the character.

And it's still can't replace Young Justice or GL:TAS, especially YJ. I'm still pissed those got canceled.

113 - 7/10/2013, 1:04 AM
@Tevii

100% agreed with that too. Batman is just everywhere all the damn time. I'm tired of him.

Superman's my favorite character and the last time we had a Superman solo animation was Superman: TAS. Why can't they do another Superman cartoon? Hell redo a Justice League cartoon. The old cartoons, while they still hold up well and I love to rewatch them was a dozen years ago.

Many kids nowadays have never watched them. Maybe the problem with YJ is that it didn't concentrate on the main heroes. Perhaps kids want the "adult" lineup like we got back in the day. Because when I was a kid/tween watching Justice League they also came out with Teen Titans animated series and I couldn't care any less about it back then.

We need a good action oriented superhero cartoon series badly.
When I say "we" I mean both kids & adults.

Marvel's toons just suck..why is Ultimate Spider-Man a slapstick comedy show?
Why was Avengers:Earths Mightest Heroes replaced with a low-quality version of the movie Avengers?

Hope this cartoon kicks ass.

@OdinBeard I think Alfred has always used guns he doesn't hold the same ideal as Bruce about killing. I remember reading an issue of Batman when Bane broke into Wayne Manor and Alfred had no problems pulling out a shotgun to shot at him.

[frick] Adventure Time, Chowder and World of Gumball.
It's because of that LSD infused bullshit that we're stuck with this slapstick garbage that has "subtle" (i.e. not really subtle but so in your face that they're not even trying) innuendo to justify the "adults can watch it too" BS.
