Big Hero 6 was somewhat of  a surprise at the 2014 box office.  The 3D computer animated film from Disney grossed $657.8 million worldwide from an estimated production budget of $165 million.  Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams, the next step for the franchise appears to be an animated show on Disney XD.  The creators of Kim Possible, Mark McCorkle and Bob Schooley, are overseeing production on the show (along with Nick Filippi) which is set to premiere some time n 2017.  The show will pick up immediately from where the film left off, following the further adventures of 14-year-old Hiro and his helper-robot Baymax.  Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Fred and Go Go are also expected to return.  The original film featured the voices of T.J. Miller, Damon Wayans Jr., Maya Rudolph, Jamie Chung, Génesis Rodríguez, Alan Tudyk and Stan Lee.  No word yet on whether any will return to voice their respective characters.

In an official Press Release, Gary Marsh, president and chief creative officer of Disney Channels Worldwide stated, "Our colleagues at Walt Disney Animation Studios have created a brilliant new world, inspired by Marvel, with vivid, unique characters.  We are thrilled to have the opportunity to further develop these characters into a world class animated series — full of fun, action and the kind of endearing storytelling that only Mark, Bob — and  Baymax — can deliver."

Would've wanted a sequel...

@Brainiac13 - Me too. It's kind of weird, the film grossed nearly 4x its production budget and took home an Oscar but only gets a TV sequel? The only thing I can think of is that it's going to get both a TV show and film sequel and the TV show is just to bridge the gap.

@MarkJulian - I hope that's the case, I know How to Train Your Dragon did something similar.

@MarkJulian - Exactly...

@MarkJulian - You know, the thing is that Dreamworks Animation does this with all of their action hits like Kung Fu Panda and How to Train Your Dragon... and then when they do get around to releasing sequels, the sequels never do as well as the originals because demand for the characters' returns has already been met.

It's just not a good strategy, it seems... But it's probably better than not doing anything with the characters at all, certainly.

That's some bullshit.

Dang it's going to be weak animation (just an assumption).

@Matador - Star Wars Rebels has amazing animation so, I'd expect better.

I hope this doesn't mean that there's not going to be a cinematic sequel. Big Hero 6 was a fun and exciting romp.

I still haven't watched this yet, unreal...never find the time, it's on cable now, I'll check it out, heard only great things about it...

This could be good.
If it had the same type of animation.
And the same writers.

I'd be fine if some of the people didn't return.
But T.J and Scott Adsit HAVE to return

So is getting the Jimmy Neutron treatment?

That's too bad. Big Hero 6 was really enjoyable. Even if it does get a proper sequel, it will probably take forever like Dreamworks' Dragon series did.

But oh well. I was never the target audience for this anyway.

ikr.

This is kinda sad... it was a good movie hopefully this doesn't ruin the chances it can continue the story in the same way (animation/voice actors/content).

Glass half full me is wondering if this means we are getting live action BH6

Funny how people seem to forget series such as How to Train Your Dragon and Kung Fu Panda had the same treatment and still continued with sequels.

I admit, I would enjoy it if "Infinity War Part 2" had a montage of heroes fighting all over the world and slipped in a live-action cameo of Big Hero 6, even though I know they're not set in the MCU world.

Well if it worked for How to Train Your Dragon, I am somewhat okay, though I'd rather have had a sequel!

You can make more money off film than TV, but I suppose advertisement revenue is the gift that keeps on giving. Good for Disney!
