SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2012: Highlights From MARVEL TV PRESENTS Panel

Unfortunately, there were absolutely no announcements made in regards to Marvel's live-action television plans, but we do have some very interesting updates on the Avengers Assemble, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., Marvel Knights and Ultimate Spider-Man animated shows.

Marvel's television panel has just wrapped up at the San Diego Comic-Con and while we do have some interesting updates on the status of their various animated endeavours, there is sadly no new information when it comes to the many live-action shows which have been talked about for the past few years. Marvel's head of TV, Jeph Loeb hosted the panel and screened some brand new footage which is described below.

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes hasn't been cancelled as Avengers Assemble is being viewed as a continuation of that series.

• Footage was shown from Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., and while it is currently in the early stages of production, Hulk, Red Hulk, She-Hulk, Skaar, and A-Bomb, were show and it was announced that the pilot was written by Paul Dini.

• She-Hulk was shown fighting strange flying bugs, Skaar shouts "Skaar Smash!" and Red Hulk has a large 90s style gun. It will be aimed at a younger audience.

Avengers Assemble is compared to what Brian Michael Bendis did in the comic books with the New Avengers series. The cast of the series is similar to Marvel's The Avengers in order to expand its audience after the success of the movie.

• Footage shown featured a giant dragon attacking Manhattan as Iron Man flies the Quinjet with the team on board. Hulk pushes Thor aside and tells him, "You'll be lucky if there's anything left to smash", before jumping out of the plane. Hawkeye and Captain America are on mini jets, while Iron Man shoots missiles at the creature causing it to fall down and then get back up.

• Upcoming "Marvel Knights" motion comics include Inhumans by Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee, Wolverine: Origins by Joe Quesada, Paul Jenkins and Andy Kubert, Eternals by Neil Gaiman and John Romita, Jr., Wolverine: Weapon X by Jason Aaron, Esad Ribic, and Ron Garney, and Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk by Damon Lindelof and Leinil Francis Yu!

Ultimate Spider-Man is the #1 animated show on Disney XD, and season two will feature the Lizard, Rhino, Beetle, and Electro.

What do you guys think of the various announcements and footage described above? More details can be found by visiting Marvel.com, and stay tuned to CBM for much more from this year's San Diego Comic-Con!

Why didnt they just change the branding/ costumes of EMH if Avengers Assemble was just going to be a continuation? Are they keeping any of the same voice actors at least? Because whoever does Tony had RDJ spot on.

Avengers Assemble needs more girls on the team.

Hulk cartoon sounds bad. But I'll give it a chance, I'm sure my sin will love it!

I remember reading somewhere that Marvel said they knew they made a mistake with Ultimate Spider-Man but already ordered two seasons. Hopefully this season will just fly by and we can get a good Spider-Man cartoon.

Hopefully they learn from their mistakes. It does seem that way from the villain list. More main Spider-Man villains are coming! I'm interested to see what else happens.

So its sort of a continuation of Earths Mightiest Heroes, so Ms. Marvel, Ant-Man, Yellowyacket, Black Panther, Wasp, Vision, am I missing anybody, just leave. Falcon is released from prison and joins, Black Widow joins, costume changes?

I guess..........

Actually sounds a little promising but why replace Black Panther with The Falcon?thats a fail imo! Also looks like their going more an ultimate's route i think the 616 Avengers is way better imo oh well..

@Ha1frican, I think it was more about liking the concepts of EMH, but not wanting to continue producing a show they didn't create. EMH was developed in 2008, 2 years before Marvel TV was created. Marvel TV didn't gain control of the series until halfway through season 2.

So while they want to keep that continuity, they want their own series. They decided to make a new one and make it a continuation.

As for voice actors, they seem to like Adrian Padar as Tony, so I'll assume he'll be Iron Man in the new series.

Spectacular spider-man was awesome and ultimate spiderman is pretty bad. I hope we can get a spiderman cartoon that keeps the quirkiness of spectacular spider-man but is also serious at the same time. Kinda like the amazing spiderman movie.

Avengers:EMH was one of the best Marvel cartoons in a while. I'm legit kinda mad that they're replacing it like that. They were so true and well-developed. And the voices and animation were such good quality! I'll watch the new one, but, like people have said, they should have changed the costumes if that was the issue to make it more like the movies. Idk about the hulk one, but I'll try the first episodes. As for ultimate Spider-Man, its annoying constantly hearing its the number one cartoon on Disney XD. I really don't like it and I've tried to watch it a few times, but I always get bothered by it.

I love this. Wish the HULK show was aimed at 24 year old nerds, but I am also glad our kids are getting a show that gets them into MARVEL early on. PUMPED for avengers assemble and tbh I love Ultimate Spider-Man. You should try watching it with an open mind, and maybe a little stoned.

The cartoon Avengers Assemble was created for the same reason the comic Avengers Assemble was created, to try to get people who liked the movie to buy the comic and watch the cartoon.

This is all about expanding the market. Marvel already has us comic geeks hooked and we will buy or watch whatever they put out. They care what we think, to a certain extent, but they are not concerned with us, the faithful few, as much as they are about getting more people to buy their stuff. It's basic economics.
AlSimmons
AlSimmons - 7/14/2012, 1:31 PM
As long as they keep the same level of writing for Assemble I'll be OK. I'm OK with Black Panther and Pym not being on the team. Black Panther has Wakanda stuff to attend to and Pym was pretty much going solo anyway.
Ultron8872
Ultron8872 - 7/14/2012, 1:43 PM
The Falcon thing is also about economics.

The marketing department probably "projected" that the Falcon would appeal more to kids, and thus sell more toys to kids because he is colorful and can fly.

The costume/powers appeal more to kids. Kids like the idea of flight, plus the red costume "pops" out on the screen.

Its basic marketing.

Yeah, I still don't buy that "continuation" bit at all. Loeb has been plugging how the new series would be episodic instead of having story arcs, so new viewers wouldn't ever feel like they're missing something or coming in halfway through a story. There's no way they drop a single reference to an entirely different television show if they don't even want to reference their own from episode to episode.

The continuation talk is just to quell bad word-of-mouth over cancelling a show people liked. At most, it'll let you pretend that they're happening in the same continuity (until, of course, they directly contradict it as they would surely do with completely different writers, creative heads and so on.)

Apparently even in animation you can only have one major black character at any given time....

According to the Newsarama Live blog the animation of Assemble is different from EMH. Different voices too. Loeb also said there would be more characters added later on.

If Avengers:Assemble is a continuation of Avengers:EMH,then I'm all in,but at least keep Ms.Marvel,Yellowjacket,Wasp,Panther, and Vision cuz just suddenly getting rid of them makes absolute zero sense. Also keep the same connection the Avengers and the rest of Marvel Universe had in EMH,but just expand on it more; and have seasons revolve around famous comic-arcs(like Civil War,Dark Reign).
