Snake?

Snake?!

SNAAAAAAAAKE!!!

During a recent interview, over at Moviefone, Jordan Vogt-Roberts [the Director of "Kong: Skull Island"] gave quite the intriguing update, to the long-rumored adaptation to the critically acclaimed franchise.

Below, he gives a very passionate explanation as to where the Pre-Production phase currently resides:

"'Metal Gear Solid' is absolutely still brewing. We're working on the script and that is one of the most special, idiosyncratic properties on the planet for me. There's not another franchise on this Earth that I would rather shepherd into existence because Kojima's voice is so special and pure and it would be so easy for Hollywood to misinterpret what that property is. Luckily, we have great producers on that. Nailing the walking philosophies as these characters exist and nailing the feeling of tension and dread you get as you're caught and every step you take you go further and further into the belly of the beast as you're sneaking around. You're nailing the feelings that that game makes you feel and putting that in a movie is so exciting to me. That is still on. We need to get the script right and we need to get the script right in a way that honors what the game is and honors Kojima's voice and breaks the curse of video game movies."

Given what was on display in "Kong: Skull Island", Mr. Vogt-Roberts could bring quite a visceral, as well as a [subtly] politically aware, experience, [filtered through characters, made prisms, of various viewpoints on the same topic] to this potential film franchise.

To casual and die-hard fans of the decade-spanning franchise, hearing that Kojima's honor is being held paramount, amongst the filmmakers' priorities, is definitively reassuring.

What do you think?

Whom will be cast as "Snake"?

Which "Snake" will they be casting?

And will they hurry up so that Kurt Russell can do what we all want and patch up: one last time!

As per usual, tell everyone what you think, below!

UPDATE:

In a March 10th Reddit AMA, Mr. Vogt-Roberts elaborated on his thoughts on the franchise:

“The first great video game movie needs to reconcile the fact that each game has its own language that elicits specific emotions from a player while investing an audience in a compelling cinematic narrative rooted in character,” Vogt-Roberts said. “Though many people are skeptical this can be done, the first great video game movie will silence naysayers in the same way The Lord of the Rings films completely redefined fantasy and reminded people that in film nothing stays ‘unadaptable’ for long.

“What does Metal Gear make you feel?...What is the quiet tension of sneaking around? What is the dread you feel as you're going further and further from safety? What is the panic you feel when the alarm goes off? Those are just basic elements of the MGS formula but finding a way to recreate those feelings on screen is crucial.”

More welcome news!

UPDATE 2:

According to another interview that he had with Collider

"Metal Gear Solid is probably the most important franchise to me on the planet. It is such a genius, idiosyncratic work and being able to spend time with [Hideo] Kojima recently has been like a dream. He’s the best and his whole team is the best. We are working on the script. That is a property that I will fight tooth and nail to make sure is done properly because it’s so easy to screw it up and so easy for a studio to try and make it into G.I. Joe or try and make it into Mission: Impossible or try and make it into something that it’s not. Metal Gear Solid needs to be exactly what it needs to be, which is Metal Gear Solid."

This is, all, sounding very, very good, indeed!!!

This is the first article that I've written, for this site.

I figured that people, here, would find this "news worthy".

Hope you enjoyed the info!

...how would this even work lol the code Weston's of this franchise is that it makes no sense. I could see an anime adaptation but an actual live action film.... just don't

@Ha1frican - Not sure, myself, how the execution would pan out.

However, given what I've seen, in "Kong: Skull Island", at the very least, aesthetically, it should be pleasing.

When it comes to the script, so long as Mr. Kojima is involved in the story and scriptwriting phases, we should be golden.

That, and the presence of a solid editor, should help usher in a redefinition of Video Game Movies [VGMs].

@CalvinEllis - yeah I guess if Hideo Kojima is involved that's put me at ease but my worry is that they go full Metal Gear as they should and then it bombs because it's so out there and then studios learn the wrong lesson and stop taking chances on these franchises. Although tbh I largely believe that video game movies should just stop being made other than like in universe side stories. Want a crazy Raiden movie made by the Wachowskie or a Sam and Sully buddy cop heist movie from Uncharted great! But the main arcs of these stories just don't fit the time restraints of film as well as say a Netflix or HBO series

@Ha1frican - Interesting.

I do like that idea.

VGMs, set within established universes, using underutilized characters, is a fresher approach.

The "Resident Evil" and "Silent Hill" franchises would've had an entirely different skew to them...

As in, if the "Resident Evil" franchise focused solely on The Umbrella Corporation covering up a pending zombie outbreak [via turncoat employees], leading to the last ten minutes, of the last film, showcasing the events before the first "Resident Evil" game.

Or if aliens and/or witches and/or demons tortured a lost human, attempting to leave The Otherworld. Just for the hell of it.

In either case, perhaps the general audience would've embraced the untapped "anti-hero suspense" genre, that begins and ends in a hellscape, more than the typical "hero finds themselves inside hell and must get out" genre.

So to speak.

a MGS movie is a bad idea the games worked because they're games they have time to develop the story and even then its still a convoluted mess(except mgs 1 and mgs 3)
