Collider recently caught up with film producer Roy Lee at DICE 2016 and got the scoop on the intended rating for the Death Note film.

"It’s definitely for adults. It is zero chance it will be below an R-rating. [The tone of the film] will be one of the first manga adaptations that feels very grounded but still has fantastical elements." Lee added that he's "fairly confident" that production on the Death Note film will start this year.

The cast includes Nat Wolf as the lead and Margaret Qualley as the female lead. Adam Wingard (You're Next, The Guest) will direct the manga adaptation for Western audiences.  Are you interested in a live-action Death Note film or is the property better left as a manga/anime?

Created as a manga, writer  Tsugumi Ohba and illustrator by Takeshi Obata have witnessed their 2003 creation spawn a spinoff manga, anime, anime film and Japanese live-action film.  The story centers around a bright Japanese high school student who randomly discovers a notebook that lets him kill anyone just by writing their name in it.

On paper everything sound like this might be great! I can only hope this will open some doors for hollywood anime adaptions with some grit.

"very grounded but still has fantastical elements" Bring it.

AS IT SGOULD BE!

WINGARD IS GONNA KILL IT! He gave us a horror cult classic with You're Next and one of my fave films of all time, The Guest.

He's so underrated

He's also doing the American remake of I Saw The Devil

@ComicsBornAndBred - There's going to be an American remake?! Man, I'm sceptical about that.

@DeusExSponge - I was at first too, but reading Wingard talk about his love of the original and knowing that he's really talented at making horror and suspense thrillers, gives me hope. The Guest is a wonderful thriller with a very cool visual tone. Dame with You're Next. Wingard says he hopes to bring his style to the remake but alo honor the intensity of the original. He says that's what made it great, the intensity and the off kilter tone.

I don't know if the remake can surpass it but it may be able to honor the original well. If it helps, know that Adi Shankar, the producer behind Dredd, Punisher Dirty Laundry and the Power Rangers hard R fan film, is producing the reboot too.

Wingard also directed the pilot of Robert Kirkman's Outcast series on Cinemax.

@ComicsBornAndBred - Now that sounds a lot better than what I had going in my head. I just hope they don't mess with the story and characters too much, and that it ends up being a good movie.

@TheEpicJuicebox - there have been R rated cbms long before deadpool. 300, watchmen, blade, kingsman, kickass, punisher war zone, sin city, dredd. As long as this budget isn't too much, they were always gonna make it R regardless of deadpool.

The manga is great. The anime series is great. The Japanese live action trilogy was...interesting. There isn't much of a problem adapting it for an American audience as far as I'm concerned. But yes, it must be rated R for the full effect. Wingard is a great choice as director.

I know nothing about this show, but I just read that it aired exactly at 23:34. Why is that? Is this a scary anime or something?

This whole R rated thing is stupid. Why do people want movies 5o be R rated? "Full effect" of what? People's desire for carnality?
