BOX OFFICE: ANT-MAN Closing In On $400 Million Worldwide Ahead Of Chinese Release

Ant-Man may not have been the runaway success that Guardians of the Galaxy was last year, but the final Phase 2 movie is still doing pretty damn well! Hit the jump to find out the latest box office numbers for the hero Zack Snyder called the "flavour of the month"...

It remains to be seen whether or not Disney and Marvel Studios are happy enough with Ant-Man's box office performance to give a sequel the green light, especially as they're more than likely waiting to see just how much of a boost it gets from China, Japan, and its eventual home video release. There's no denying that the movie has done well (it's outgrossed Captain America: The First Avenger, and that still got a sequel), but probably not as much as Marvel were hoping for given the success of their other movies. Will this be the case for the likes of Doctor Strange and Captain Marvel? That remains to be seen. Regardless, Ant-Man is now closing in on $400 million worldwide with a $394.741 million haul. It opens in Japan next weekend and in China on October 16th, so it's going to be interesting to see how close to $500 million it gets. With a end figure like that, you can be sure that it will indeed receive a follow-up! How many times have you seen Ant-Man

Not too shabby, not too shabby at all. The Chinese debut should also give it a nice little push.

Remember, Zak Snyder says that this is just a "fad", and movies like this aren't that great because it isn't Batman or Superman. It's true, Snyder said so.

@TheRealRemyLebeau "$130M budget. Double that = $390M."

I think you mean triple.

@DrHankPym

Iron Man was also not known by 95% of the audience when it was released, and MOS had Superman where 95% of the audience knew EXACTLY who he was. Nice comparison, lol

So since both movies are the start of a universe (where neither universe was officially announced at the times release), comparing the box office of an unknown Iron Man vs. the most popular superhero of all time? Sounds like you are stretching pretty hard there

I think it's weird that people don't think Ant-Man was a risk because it was too "formulaic". But let's stop and think a second. It was a movie about a c-list character who's superpower is shrinking. How is making a big budget movie about him not considered a risk? You people are so acustom to Marvel's success that you are blinded by the fact that they have introduced Ant-Man into pop culture.

So an Ant-Man movie wasn't a risk, but a Superman movie was......

Yes, this is what we are dealing with here, lol

"If Superman is that easy to make money off than why didn't Superman Returns own the box office?"

Because the movie was a hot mess. Go watch it again. Everything except Kevin Spacey was [frick]ing terrible. (and the eyeball shot and plane scene)

You're digging a hole for yourself because, yes MoS is the highest grossing Superman movie. But it's also the 6th Superman movie, as opposed to IronMan's first. Their place in their respective universe does not matter to a general audience, because that's not common knowledge. It is to cb fans but we're only a small %. But if you want to make it that type of discussion, Fine. MoS grossed more than Ironman, but Ironman made more money for the studio because it had a tighter budget and had less brand recognition.
