BOX OFFICE: ANT-MAN Expected To Open BIG, But May Not Reach #1 Stateside

A Marvel Studios movie not debuting at #1? Say it ain't so! However, that's looking like a possibility this weekend in North America for Ant-Man. Luckily, it seems as if the movie is going to perform a lot better overseas. Hit the jump for details...

Deadline has the latest projections for Peyton Reed's Ant-Man, and things are looking very good indeed. Globally, the latest movie from Marvel Studios is expected to bring in a haul of around $115 million - $125 million. That puts it ahead of Thor's global debut back in 2011, and means it will be off to a strong start. However, it unfortunately faces some pretty stiff competition domestically.

The site believes that the film will debut somewhere beneath $65 million, which is a fantastic debut, but might see it fail to reach #1. That's because Judd Apatow's Trainwreck could take a chunk out of its haul with older moviegoers, but the real problem is Minions. After debuting with an amazing $115.7 million last weekend, it's expected to drop only around 50%, and may even near the $60 million mark. If it does better than expected, that could cause Ant-Man a headache.

It ultimately seems unlikely though, and based on how Guardins of the Galaxy overperformed last year, don't be surprised to see Ant-Man do the same. What are you seeing this weekend?

I'm much less worried about how much it makes, compared to how much I hope to enjoy the film.

Almost no chance of it breaking $650 million.

Average reviews, and some great competition including minions, trainwreck, vacation, southpaw, pixels (lowest common denominator will be attracted), and mission impossible 5 in the next few weeks.

Well a movie about unknown 9 feet blue people outgrossed ever A-D list superhero movie and also outgrossed every movie ever.

Why do people care about box office? Shit Batman Begins is hands down one of the best superhero origin films of all time and that only made around 325 million total.

Like, why do people care about money they will never see or get a piece of?

If that POS Amy Shitmer movie beats Ant man this week i'll be pretty pissed. Sure I've never been super psyched for Ant Man, but that deserves way more money then anything Amy Schumer is in, she isn't funny, period. I only laughed once at anything she did and thats cause it had bill nye in it.

I agree with all commenters before and after me because I crave approval from random strangers to validate my shitty life and compensate for a lifetime of failure.

The movie faces average reviews and competition from WWZ, and Monsters University. GOTG faced a negatively reviewed Ninja Turtles. If it didn't make as much as it did it would be marvels biggest fail since the mandarin twist

I think that Minions will drop more than 50%. Kids may love it but I heard parents didn't enjoy it so I doubt their will be repeat viewings. Also I think Ant-Man will overperform. My guess is 75-80M range but I have no clue, it can break JW record for all Ik.

This is a Marvel film. It will do at least $65 million, especially after people realize it's one of the best Marvel efforts yet.

I'm calling it now: $75 million weekend, conservatively.

Remember Guardians.

@dannramm113- I actually don't care about box office scores all that much, I was just messing around. I know Guardians didn't have that much competition but I just said that cause it's hilarious seeing dc fanboys get worked up over nothing lmao
