Evangeline Lilly Talks 'Hope Van Dyne', 'Wasp', & "Total Crap" ANT-MAN Comics
Ummm, I guess Marvel gave her the Eric O'Grady comics to research! In a new in-depth interview, former Lost alum Evangeline Lilly discusses her Ant-Man character Hope van Dyne, her relationship with her mother (The Wasp), and more. Be warned, some big SPOILERS ahead...
Collider has posted a very interesting interview with Evangeline Lilly, who talks about various aspects of playing Hope van Dyne in Marvel's Ant-Man. It turns out her role was beefed up significantly from the original Edgar Wright draft, and when Peyton Reed took the helm Lilly campaigned for her character to be given a "really full arc". This evidently included a renewed focus on Hope's relationship with her father Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and mother Janet; who of course is Marvel superhero Wasp in the comics.
It's already been confirmed that Janet Van Dyne will appear in the movie, but when asked to elaborate on this Lilly drops a pretty major SPOILER. "When we begin the film, Janet Van Dyne is not alive. She’s lost her mother," the actress explains. "That marks the character in a way that affects everything she does. Her mother has become a figure in her mind more than a human being, and I think that she has always suffered from that loss and not having that presence, that female figure in her life."
Does Janet go down fighting as The Wasp? Lilly's not telling - nor is she giving any hints as to whether Hope follows in her Mother's footsteps and dons a costume. But, she does reveal that she wasn't influenced by Wasp's comic arcs because she didn't have access to any runs that featured the character. The books Marvel did provide? Well, Lilly... wasn't a huge fan.
"I am still trying to figure out how to get my hands on original ‘Ant-Man’ comics, where you get them. I’ve been given a couple recent ‘Ant-Man’ comics. No offense Marvel, but they are total crap. I really want to read the original ones, because I got through two and I was like, dude, you can’t force-feed me another one of these magazines. It was terrible. But Janet’s not in them, and neither is Hank and neither is Scott. It’s just a completely different fabrication. So if anybody has any old ‘Ant-Man’ comics they want to lend me."
