You know I am pretty stoked on Ant-man in 2015 as the next person, but I will admit that I am a little scared how much comedy will be involved, trust me I want comedy an especially since Edgar Wright will be making the film.

But casting Paul Rudd as Hank Pym / Ant-man got To me in not the nicest way, and everyone seems to be really stoked on his casting ? Now let me understand this clearly it's being made by a comedy maker who is so easily capable of leveling comedy and action out, but most importantly a comedian who has never really done a serious role.

Now I wasn't bummed because he didn't have blonde hair or look like Hank Pym, he can easily pull of the look and he actually would look cool with some glasses on.

I'm not against his casting, I wasn't angry I was just taking things realistically and thinking.. "can he pull of being serious and a super hero movie?" Now obviously he won't be serious throughout the whole movie but he will have to have scenes where he is full on serious, at least I hope.

Everything surrounding this film makes me more and More excited, location info, Edgar's take on the film, and the fact that he made so many good movies! (Holler at all the Scott Pilgrim fans)

But honestly is Paul Rudd the best choice? You can ignore the facts by saying "haters gonna hate" and maybe show a video of him dancing but I'm not a hater and I'm not hating, I'm just curious, he's a great comedian and actor but do truly see him doing this role or are you just stoked because you love Anchorman ?

Now I went around and asked a lot of people who were huge fans of Paul Rudd and his movies and I asked

"Did you know that Paul Rudd will be playing a scientist who turns into a super hero? A new Marvel film"

After telling them more in depth info about Ant-man, Hank Pym and the direction, AND director of the film most of them said this

"I freaking love Paul Rudd he's my favorite, but I don't see him pulling off a super hero role but I guess we'll see.. It'll be weird trying to take him seriously"

Now I'm not trying to raise some awareness that Paul Rudd shouldn't be Ant-Man like i said and sorry if it's annoying I'm just confused, and even more on why people are so excited for it, if you guys have some vision on how the movie will turnout and how Paul Rudd will easily do a great job tell me!

Now what you probably do is you find a picture that you can translate to him portraying Hank Pym. But you do realize that's your mind controlling what you think he could do? You can find any picture and say. "Well hey have you seen this picture? He looks just like Hank Pym.. Yeah I can see it". But to tell you the truth that doesn't prove to anyone that he can portray that role because your not watching him act, it's his acting.. A movie you've seen that you say "Well the way he did that role, I could see him doing something sort of like that but more Hank Pym."

We can't determine who can do what by a photo, what if some go looked literally like the Human form of Hank Pym from the comics but was a terrible actor? You would probably say "give the guy the role!" Now this isn't against him as an actor I'm not saying that he's a horrible actor I'm just saying that you can't depend on a photo, now I will be stoked if you can really portray the role because I think you can look like Hank Pam if he dyed his hair, and if he can really do it I'm All in, I'm all eyes, I am really stoked either way I just hope that it turns out good

I really trust Edgar Wright the guy knows what he's doing so I will trust him with this casting if he thinks it's right then it should be right because he's a really smart filmmaker and I trust him!

Edgar Wright can't go wrong with the film so this will probably be amazing and I know in his eyes he sees something and Paul Rudd and maybe if I don't understand yet or others as well.. it will probably be amazing

Will it be good. ...No......it's going to another Marvel comedy. Not a big fan off Ant Man......but hope they link him to Ultron somehow.

Aside from seeing Rudd in serious roles (I actually had a hard time seeing him in comedies at first, as I'd seen him in dramas long before Anchorman came out, etc), comedy is also more difficult than serious roles.

How many comedians have crossed over into dramatic roles? Countless. How many dramatic actors are amazing at something like SNL sketches? Not too many. Comedic timing and delivery is INCREDIBLY harder than dramatic scenes. It's been proven over and over again that someone who can nail comedic parts will most likely have an easy time doing serious roles.

But like I said, he's great in the dramatic films I've seen him in. He also doesn't take himself too seriously. He may not ever have the box office draw Robert Downey Jr has, but I definitely see him having comparable qualities. I also don't see "serious" being much of an issue either way, since this film will certainly have plenty of levity.

It's also tough to get too worried about it since we haven't read a script, or even a treatment. We just saw a proof-of-concept video for the effects/powers, which gives absolutely no idea for tone. Wright and the producers have obviously read the script, know what the role calls for, and Rudd fits in their eyes.

I never would have thought of RDJ for Iron Man in 2007, nor would I have expected him to be so completely amazing in the role.

@0megaDaGod

The most obvious example is always goign to be Tom Hanks for me. But yeah, you named some solid ones. Bill Murray is another.

Clueless is probably one of his most grounded early roles. It's a comedic film, but he isn't a spastic nut like in 200 Cigarettes. Cidar House Rules is one I can't remember many laughs in. Also, The Shape of Things (which I can never watch again, and seriously ruined Rachel Weisz for me seemingly forever) is a dramatic role for him, and something I see showing up on HBO a lot lately...odd.

Our Idiot Brother...he's clearly playing a not-very serious role, but I'd describe it as a light drama all the same. And the already mentioned This Is 40...which is painful to watch in some parts, certainly shows his range. I think if you watch This Is 40, and then something like Overnight Delivery or 200 Cigarettes (to showcase how outrageously silly he can be), you get a solid sense of what he's capable of.

I think he might pull off a serious role but it's too hard to tell.
Like said before I haven't see him play a serious character at all and I hope marvel don't push for that comedic tone, since the audience are supposed to a character named
Antman serious.

I think Edgar wright might pull it off too, I'm a fan of Scott pilgrim movie,
This guy can do some good action scenes and make each one different from the last, so I know we might see some action like never before.

I wouldn't use his role in Clueless as a serious role at all

Clueless isn't a serious movie, but like I said, it's one of his most grounded characters. He's definitely not one of the sillier characters in the film, and may well give a good indication of how he can balance slight comedy with serious tone, which is likely with a Marvel movie.

And as far as Marvel "pushing for that comedic tone"...

Edgar Wright's films are comedies. Every Marvel movie since Iron Man has had plenty of levity. I think it's pretty clear what one should expect.

Okay, first, as others have pointed out, he may be Lang, not Pym. The announcement just said Ant-Man, it didn't mention the name of the person.

Next, not everyone is that stoked by this film. I think it has a very good chance of being Marvel's first bomb (unless GotG bombs first.) I'll watch it, but I might wait for it to move into a dollar theater, or for it to move to Starz/HBO.

@Omega, that test footage gives me such doubt about this film. I showed it to several non comic book fan friends and they thought it was silly and goofy. Whereas I thought it was incredible. However I guess this bodes well if they're going for a comedy.

Just look at Our Idiot Brother. That movie is a lot more serious than people realize. Especially when he breaks down during charades. He'll own this role.

@AlexRival

I concur. There's comedic elements to it, and it's not SUPER heavy, but there's plenty of dramatic stuff in Our Idiot Brother.

He played a "normal" guys in movies like Knocked up, This is 40, I love you man, etc.
So what if he likes to slappa da bass mon here and there? People have their quirks. Pym and Lang definitely have their quirks.
And ultimately the movie might end up being a full blown comedy or parody set in the MCU. What would be wrong with that if done well?
Now some will say IM3 and TDW were already comedies, but they're exaggerating.
