After reaching the $300 million domestic checkpoint last weekend, James Wan's Aquaman has now accomplished an even more impressive feat. The film, which currently sits at a worldwide total of $1.09 billion, has swam past the $1.085 total of The Dark Knight Rises, making the underwater adventure the highest grossing DC film to ever grace the screen.

During the past week, with the help of overseas takings, Aquaman also passed Toy Story 3, which as a result allowed the film to settle into the top 25 highest grossing movies worldwide.

At this steady pace, Aquaman is projected to pass Captain America: Civil War in the coming weeks. Currently only $63 million behind the Marvel film, strong legs in current markets and a decent opening in Japan will no doubt help the figures considerably.

With $316 million to date, the United States remains the film's highest market, with China following with $290 million.

@GoldGuy - The most "marvel" like DC movie. Wish it was better, but at least it wasn't junk. It's clear the market exists for DC properties, but they need to step things up more.

lol, genius. anyways, congrats to James Wan and the Aquaman crew in general, they made a fun, over-the-top, epic, anime-as-hell of a thing and people showed up to see it. not many have that kind of luck.

I think some of you are forgetting that those numbers are not accounted for inflation.

@Kur5e - Oh yeah and don't forget the stupid 3d, which pretty much makes everything more successfully if you compare it to earlier pictures.
