AQUAMAN Looks Set To Sink The Competition This Christmas According To Box Office Tracking

Aquaman, Bumblebee, and Mary Poppins Returns have hit tracking boards and it looks like the DCEU is about to get some long overdue good news! Hit the jump for details on how things will play out...

While many box office analysts have predicted a Christmas win for Mary Poppins Returns at the box office next month, it appears as if Aquaman will stand tall as king. According to new tracking data, the DC Comics adaptation is eyeing a debut in North America of $65+ million and should top the charts over the December 21st - December 23rd holiday weekend period.

With Christmas Day on a Tuesday, it's hard to say how things will pan out from there but Aquaman will have a huge lead over its two rivals; right now, it's looking like Mary Poppins Returns will make $35 million - $40 million during its first five days of release (it opens on
the Wednesday), while Bumblebee is looking at a $25 million - $30 million debut.

This is amazing news for Warner Bros. and seeing as it's hard to imagine reviews for Aquaman being anything other than glowing after those initial reactions, these figures will probably just rise from here.

Whatever happens, it's going to be an interesting weekend when all these movies hit
theaters next month and Fox has already backed down by delaying Alita: Battle Angel until February 2019. Are you surprised that Arthur Curry is going to be crowned king of not just Atlantis but also the box office? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.

With this kind of opening, Aquaman could end up anywhere between $225-300M in the US, hopefully in the higher end.
If Mary Poppins legs out like Jumanji: WTJ, it will end up with $330M.
Bumblebee cost just around $100M, so it will be fine.

@Pantherpool - how does Mary Poppins get a higher BO then Aquaman? I mean I’ll agree it’s plausible but that just depends on reviews. Mary Poppins gets over 80% then maybe but Until reviews for these movies come out its impossible to determine a final prediction for BO

@whynot - MPR will most likely have some of the strongest legs during the season; Aquaman will be more front-loaded.
Think of Aquaman as Star Wars/Hobbit and of MPR as Jumanji (legs-wise).

@Pantherpool - again that all matters on reviews from both audiences and critics. If visually it’s great audiences will flock at the BO look at Avatar. Visually it was a masterpiece I personally thought it was a shitty movie but I’m not one to do repeat viewings of any movie I just wait til it hits dvd. I think if Aquaman is as good as the initial reactions it’s gonna have some legs. Now with Mary Poppins I thought it would take opening weekend no problem. Usually a movie that hits 2 nd place doesn’t out perform 1st place unless it’s a close race to #1 I guess it all depends on MPR reviews

@whynot - The thing is, the Holiday movie season tends to be quite different than the other movie seasons, box office wise.

@Pantherpool - I’m just hoping Aquaman MPR and Bumblebee are successful

I've been seeing this in movies in general, but does anyone know why movies sees a rise on Tuesdays? Check box office numbers and it seems Tuesdays take a spike. Christmas falling on Tuesday is gonna bode well to the films playing.

@LongMayHeReign - it’s a good response. I think we all saw first hand the power of the General Audience this FALL with the mamouth success of Venom inspite of awful reviews and very strong vocal attacks from CB/CBM.

My faith in the IP and it’s connection with the GA was one of the reasons I stood by my prediction that Venom was going to be a huge win for SONY.

Now to your real question. It doesn’t upset me. It was simply a fascination. It tickled my fancy to see so many certain Genre Fans seemingly signing up for a film outside their genre and leaving behind the film whose genre was their wheel house. It only goes as far for me as seeing a strong example for Brand Loyalty.

As for unnecessary/necessary. You got me on that. I’ve been all over the Internet for many years reading critics take down so many films and using the phrase “unnecessary” as one of their tools. I tried it myself just now. Didn’t like how it fit.
