While many box office analysts have predicted a Christmas win for Mary Poppins Returns at the box office next month, it appears as if Aquaman will stand tall as king. According to new tracking data, the DC Comics adaptation is eyeing a debut in North America of $65+ million and should top the charts over the December 21st - December 23rd holiday weekend period.
With Christmas Day on a Tuesday, it's hard to say how things will pan out from there but Aquaman will have a huge lead over its two rivals; right now, it's looking like Mary Poppins Returns will make $35 million - $40 million during its first five days of release (it opens on the Wednesday), while Bumblebee is looking at a $25 million - $30 million debut.
This is amazing news for Warner Bros. and seeing as it's hard to imagine reviews for Aquaman being anything other than glowing after those initial reactions, these figures will probably just rise from here.
Whatever happens, it's going to be an interesting weekend when all these movies hit theaters next month and Fox has already backed down by delaying Alita: Battle Angel until February 2019.
