If I were Joss Whedon, I would kill this character in Avengers: Age of Ultron

There is this guy called Joss Whedon who is famous for killing beloved fictional characters in his work, and he is directing the upcoming MCU movie Avengers: Age Of Ultron; and last time I checked, I am not Joss Whedon, but I were him, I would kill...

Editorial Opinion

It is widely believed that Joss Whedon would kill a character in the upcoming MCU movie Avengers: Age of Ultron, given his track record of killing beloved characters like Wash and Coulson (I would like him to stay dead but I digress).

Now, personally I am rather fed up with the cliche of "killing a character to up the ante and make the audience think 'it is serious' ". It was done in X2 (Jean Grey), The Dark Knight (Rachel), The Amazing Spider-man 1 and 2 (Captain Stacy, SPOILERS sorry), as well as in a few other movies; heck, How To Train Your Dragon 2 did it too (SPOILERS sorry). But as stated above, given that it is Joss Whedon, it is very likely that he would like to do it again. And to be fair, it is a matter of how to use the cliche that counts. So I am open to the idea of killing someone in the movie

Therefore, if I were Joss Whedon, I think I must ensure that:
  1. killing that character would not disrupt MARVEL's future movie plans,
  2. the death of the character I chose has to be unexpected, and
  3. the death of the character I chose causes real sadness, in other words, no "ah, sucks, s/he is dead now, great use of cliche Joss!"

I would first elaborate on Criterion 1.
Obviously, that crosses out Cap America and Thor, unless Kevin Feige is crazy enough to introduce the female Thor and the Falcon Cap America in the planned sequels.
As Hawkeye is more or less confirmed to be in Cap 3, he is also crossed out.
Iron Man is also kinda sorta crossed out. MARVEL just paid RDJ a lot of money just to make sure that he would be in Avengers 2 and Avengers 3, it would be crazy to kill Iron Man off after all that effort and money. Granted, in the unlikely event that Iron Man is killed in Avengers 2/ Avengers: Age Of Ultron, he could still be ressurected in Avengers 3, but I think that is very unlikely.

On Criterion 2, I cross out Black Widow and Nick Fury.
A lot of these editorials I read online suggest that Black Widow, Nick Fury and/or Hawkeye (which I had already crossed out) would be killed in Avenger: Age Of Ultron because they are merely human, thus they are vulnerable and could be killed; and if I were given the choice, I would not do that, because it is too obvious, and it is very likely that when the death takes place on screen, a significant amount of the audience would shout, "called it!" instead of the desired "OMG!"

On Criterion 3, I cross out the twins, Falcon and Rhodey (if either or both of them are included, too lazy to look up imdb), and Maria Hill.
Simply put, we don't really care about Maria Hill, no one would bat an eye if she kicks the bucket, so it would be really cheap if she was killed in the movie, it would be nothing but a plot device to articially up the stakes.
Personally I don't care about Rhodey, yeah 1 movie with Terence Howard and 2 movies with Don Cheadle and I still don't care about him (and I want to erase the memory of Cheadle's second outing as Rhodey as well, but I digress). If you care about Rhodey, more power to you, I just don't, and same as Maria Hill, killing him would be a cheap plot device to me.
Killing either or both of the twins would be beyond stupid, why would MARVEL dedicate so much time and energy just to strike up a deal with FOX and get the rights to use the twins, just to kill them in their first cinematic appearance in a MARVEL movie? Case closed, they will survive.
Falcon is a little bit tricky, I had considered crossing him out in criterion 1, but I think he should be put here, in criterion 3. All the same, he is crossed out from the "Character-to-kill" list.
(Or in the very unlikely event that Pepper Potts are included, I would cross her out because of 2 reasons: A), cheap shot, a few people want her dead anyway; and B), they had already done that in Iron ... I swore to never mention that POS again, sorry.)

Which leaves us with...

Bruce Banner, aka The Hulk

Think about it.
  1. MARVEL currently has no plans on doing another solo HULK movie; and to be honest, I don't see how another HULK movie would work. He runs from the military. Ross is looking for him. Another Ross is looking for him. He hulks out, wrecks shit. Big climatic fight. Credits. That sounds quite like a retread. Or MARVEL could make a HULK movie, with more HULK and less Bruce Banner. Problem is, people seem to like Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner more; his mannerisms, facial expressions, and his way of showing a range of emotions; and it would be very very hard to showcase these qualities of Mr Ruffalo if HULK would be on screen most of the time, not Bruce Banner. Therefore, killing HULK would not affect MARVEL's plans (provided there is no secret HULK movie being planned).
  2. Let's be honest, have you ever pondered on the possiblity of HULK being killed in Avengers: Age Of Ultron before reading this article? I came up with the answer with logical reasoning, pondering on the criteria I set, and elimination; and I blew my mind when I reached the conclusion. Sorry if I brag but you have to agree that not a lot of people considered killing the Hulk after seeing Mark Ruffalo's brilliant portrayl of Bruce Banner in Avengers.
  3. As stated above, Mark Ruffalo's portrayal of Bruce Banner/ the Hulk is universally loved. Between killing him and killing Maria Hill, I believe 99 people out of 100 would have a bigger emotion response towards killing Bruce Banner compared to killing Hill.

Now I am NOT saying that I know for sure that Joss would kill someone in the movie, and I don't know how the Hulk be killed without breaking the set rules in the cinematic universe. All I am saying is that were I Joss Whedon, I would kill Bruce Banner.
So there you have it, my two cents on who I think Joss Whedon should kill in Avengers: Age Of Ultron. If you disagree/ agree/ think I am high/ have any comments, please sound off below, and please click the red glove on your left!

Yeah, if there weren't any rumors of plans for Hulk after Age of Ultron, I would actually consider this to be VERY plausible.

I mean, why not? He's not 'untouchable' like the big three of Stark, Thor, and Cap. The Avengers film basically made sure that we care about Banner again. Seeing Stark and Banner go at it in Age of Ultron and then possibly have Banner die? That's be a MASSIVE emotional kick in the gut to the viewers, especially because it'd most likely be Tony's fault in the first place.

But I also want to see Ruffalo's contract and see how many films he's signed up for: THAT would be the biggest indicator if this could be true or not, IMO.

Still, very logical choice! I can't see anything wrong with this.

I wouldn't kill anyone. I would write the funniest movie I could with some unique action scenes. I'd add in a little drama and emotion here and there. Then I'd sit back and watch a billion dollars appear.

Hulk won't die Hulk is strongest there is!!!!!!!!!

i could see vision making a noble sacrifice to save the avengers from ultron and then tony could rebuild him. they could pretend to kill thor like they did in EMH.

Although I don't agree with you, great article. This topic of "who should die in the sequel" usually spawns some insane reasons as to who and why but yours was A man.

He doesn't die. People are misinterpreting Whedon words. He never flat out confirmed an Avenger would die, he only said that if the time comes AND it makes sense, sure. And with Whedon teasing death, would normal citizens with no quarrel with these godly beings have a huge impact also? Yes.

But I hear the main characters who are most likely to kick the boot are Tony Stark and Thor.

I agree.... a lot. Killing Hulk (or appearing to) would make much more sense than killing off Iron Man or Cap. Great article!

This may sound crazy, but if I had to kill one of the man four it would definitely be Iron Man/Tony Stark.

I still don't believe any of the avengers will die. Don't need realistic stakes in my escapist sci-fi movies.

Thor needs to be the one to perish. That way the after credits scene can be Thor waking up in Valhalla and being greeted by Odin and have everyone be like WTF!

They won't need to kill an Avenger. Ultron is going to essentially commit genocide before they will be able to stop him. You don't need to kill a main character to make the stakes real. The stakes ARE real.

IF they kill someone it will either be Vision (who will be brought back) or Pietro. Only reason I say Quicksilver would bite the bullet is Aaron Taylor Johnson has been very vocal about not being a fan of sequels. And if Pietro died at the hands of Ultron? Wanda would legit [frick] shit UP! Can you imagine her clutching her dead brother and then going nuclear on the Ultron bots, just dismantling them to their base elements in a matter of moments. That also sets Wanda up as a potential threat on a global scale.

Characters I'd be happy to see die in the Marvel Cinematic Universe:

Warmachine - No more Iron Man movies, and he's a redundant character, so a loose end
Maria Hill - I honestly don't know what she does in the movies, aside from, be there
Hulk - He's funny as Hulk, but not as Banner, just quirky and shadowed by the others
Coulson - I'm sick of the whole "Is he really alive?" bullshit. Just kill him off
Heimdall - Idris Elba could be playing bigger comicbook characters, but Heimdall?
Odin - We all hate Odin
Jane Foster - Portman's sexy as hell, but Jane is just annoying. Let Thor get together with Darcy and keep Eric wearing pants all the time, and we'll have good Thor movies

And every single character on Agents of SHIELD bar May. She's the only awesome one.

@Gliderman,

I mean, throughout season one the whole "What is TAHITI? Did he really come back to life because of that blue alien?" etc. I thought with the finale we finally moved pass that, but now with the teaser of him drawing that whole creepy future plan thing that Garett foresaw, obviously there's going to be more to it. And I'm sick of it.

They introduced a one dimensional character to the movie universe, and now they're trying to create a big "Is he alive/dead/not human" kind of thing with him in his own spinoff show, and it's not working because;

A. All his allies are a bunch of original characters created for the show without any build up to them or substance beyond their recurring characteristics
B. All the villains used in season one are originally created. At least season 2 is fixing this
C. They ruined all the build up and story to the season finale with the last episode, patronising and mocking the lead antagonist and using too much of the "We see the future, we will make a new world order" gibberish without adding substance and explanation to their claim.

In short, Agents of SHIELD was a lot of promise, but never delivered for me. Agent Coulson was never meant to be this big of a character, and now that he is, he's too one dimensional to be anything else.

@Gliderman,

Fair enough, it's just a personal quirk for me. And I agree that Black Widow dying in the movie would have the most reason behind it; she's the only Avenger with personal unique relationships to each other Avenger, meaning it would hit them all equally hard. If someone like Hawkeye died, Thor would just be standing all like "Who is this Barton you speak of Rogers?".

Still if Heimdall died, Idris Elba could go off and make bigger comic book roles, like Luke Cage, Black Panther or even Green Lantern. He's a talented actor who deserves a bigger role.

Personally, Hulk is my pick to die too.

Simply, Marvel has no idea what to do with him, his character has nowhere to go after his "I'm always angry" moment, he's now got a grip on his powers.

His death would be meaningful, and wouldn't disrupt the future plans. Plus he's a fan favourite in a Joss Whedon title, it's like he has a giant bullseye on his back anyway.

Plus, Ultron is supposed to be this badass AI that will kill anything that threatens world peace. I think he'd have a problem with Mr Banner. You want to establish your villain as a threat? Have him kill the hardest to kill mother[frick]er in The Avengers.

@homodrome- Whedon already said he had greater plans for Quicksilver than just in the AoU movie. I think most people are seeing that as an indicator of his connection to Crystal and the Inhumans.

Reminds me a bit of the joke about the statistician in the airplane.

I was sitting on an airplane and the man sitting next to me was a statistician. We hit stormy weather on the flight and the captain came on the intercomm:

"Don't worry folks, lightning hit our wing and we've lost one of our four engines. Don't worry, though, these planes are designed to fly even with an engine out. But we will be landing a few minutes later than scheduled."

Later, the pilot came on again. "Folks, we just lost another engine, but we're still in the air. Don't worry. But we are going to be about an hour later than planned."

Finally, the pilot came on once more. "We've just lost a third engine. It may sound dire, but these planes are built to fly even under these sorts of conditions. We will be landing as soon as possible, but at this speed, it may be two hours later than scheduled."

The statistician laughed, turned to me, and said: "I hope we don't lose that last engine. We'll be up here forever."

What I'm saying is: sometimes pure logic will lead you astray. I understand how you got to the Hulk, and I'm not even saying it would be a bad decision, but it's not the direction I would go. I think Rulkalo will be a valued addition to just about any ensemble piece in the future (maybe a Guardians / Planet Hulk film), and I wouldn't throw that away for shock value (which is what a character death in this context is).

Let me reiterate, though. I respect the methodology and the reasoning of the article overall (even if we disagree about Iron Man 3). Thumbs up.
