'Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron' ranked on Deadline's "Most Valuable Blockbuster" list. How much did it really make for the studio?

With all of the numbers being thrown around about what 'Batman v. Superman' has to make in order to turn a profit, Deadline Hollywood's yearly Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament couldn't be more timely. Take a look at all of the earnings and costs of Marvel's last huge feature, and find out how much it really made when all was tallied up, as well as where it ranked on a list of other recent comic book films.

With the release of Batman v. Superman, talk of box office grosses and the numbers needed to turn a profit have been flying fast and furious around here.  How much does a film like that really need to make in order to be in the black?  For the past 3 years, Deadline Hollywood has been taking a closer look at the total grosses and costs of the major money earners and ranking them on a yearly "Most Valuable Blockbuster" list.

Starting with the box office broken into "Domestic", "Foreign" and "China" totals, they then determine how much of that money actually came back to the studios in Theatrical Rental gross.  Next they add in Home Entertainment grosses for both Domestic and International, and then Television as well as any other revenues.  From that Total Gross Revenue they subtract the production costs, releasing costs (foreign and domestic), home entertainment costs, interest, residuals, particiaption, overhead and distribution fees to come up with a final number representing the total profit earned by the film.

The the current countdown of 2015's biggest blockbusters has reached the next big Superhero blockbuster, Marvel's Avengers: Age of Ultron, which ranked 4th with total profits of $382.3m, just ahead of Furious 7's $354m.

Looking at the major numbers:
Global Box Office:  $1405.4m
Total Revenue (Box Office share, Domestic video and Television earnings):  $1042.2m
Total Costs:  $659.9m
Studio Net Profit:  $382.3m
(Be sure to check out the source for the full breakdown of the numbers)

A monster amount, but not enough to claim the top Superhero spot on their charts since Deadline started their yearly tournaments.  Despite outgrossing Iron Man 3 by about $190m at the global box office, in the end the total profit brought in by the direct Avengers sequel wasn't quite enough to overtake the solo hero's biggest entry in the profits department.  The biggest reason likely being the rising production costs, as well as an estimated $100m in payouts to talent involved.

Here are how the most profitable Comic Book Movies have done in total estimated profits since Deadline began their yearly list with the 2013 releases:

Iron Man 3 - $391.8m
Avengers Age of Ultron - $382.3m
Guardians of the Galaxy - $204.2m
Big Hero 6 - $187.3m
Captain America:  The Winter Soldier - $166.2m
Thor The Dark World - $139.4m
Ant-Man - $103.9m
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - $81.31m
X-men Days of Future Past - $77.4m
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 - $70.4m
Man of Steel - $42.7m

Where will this year's entries like Deadpool, Batman v. Superman, Captain America Civil War, and X-men Apocalypse land on the chart?  We'll have to wait until next year for all of the factors to be counted.

$100 M to the talents? It's insane to think that RDJ got an absurd percentage of that!

This movie is so good. Gotta watch both Avengers and Cap movies before Civil War.

Captain America's movies are the only ones that have been consistently good. All other solo films have been hit and miss.

Deadpool is going be #1 on this list next year.

@UrbanEnigma - It should be up there, certainly. It had around $140m less in production costs to pay off than 'X-Men Days of Future Past', so adding back in that money alone would put it around $220m in profits at this point, which is good enough for third on that list. But it has earned more stateside than XDoFP did, which usually brings more back to the studio, and it's hard to say how marketing costs have compared.

Plus it's not even done earning yet. Still, how amazing is it that 'Deadpool' is going to be the highest grossing X-men movie ever in a few days?

@Chewtoy - I think Deadpool will finish shy of $800M in total revenue. It really could have have nearned $1B if it wasn't banned in China. DOFP earned $116M there.

Even though I know it's just wishful thinking, I really hope the studio executives don't get too involved in the sequels. Unfortunately, Deadpool just became their most important franchise.

@UrbanEnigma - Star Wars is going to be number one. That 2 Billion dollars is gonna make for a portion of the difference between their budget and Deadpool's. And considering there's a bidding war for the Star Wars TV rights the revenue on that front is gonna be off the chart. DVD and Blu-Ray... you get the idea.

But Deadpool will definitely be second

@AgentZero - Star Wars The Force Awakens should be on this year's list. Star Wars Rogue One will be on next year's.

@AgentZero & @Chewtoy - Why would Star Wars be on a list of most profitable Comic Book Movies? Comic Books were made about Star Wars, but they're hardly a Comic Book Movies.

@UrbanEnigma - It's a list of movies in general not CBM. The article poster just selected the movies that would be of interest to us.

Read the article on Deadline

@AgentZero - Oh I'm referring to the posted list, not the article. As in Deadpool will be the #1 most profitable comic book movie.

i thought man of steel cost only 90 mil. ? all the product placement etc. same with BvS turkish airlines etc.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 3/28/2016, 1:32 PM
@HugoStiglitz - A lot of those deals aren't in exchange for cash so much as marketing partnerships. For instance, the amount that Turkish Airlines pays to produce the commercials and spends buying ad time during the Superbowl to run them is counted in the total amount earned from product placement, but it's marketing that WB doesn't have to pay for, rather than cash they can pocket.

And on really big releases, studios often don't spend less themselves because of deals like that... they still buy all of the ad time they were going to anyway, and count all of the rest as extra ads to really flood the market with awareness.
