AVENGERS: ENDGAME's Final Battle Nearly Included The Dark Elves; Identity Of Aliens In Thanos' Army Revealed

Avengers: Endgame's final battle is truly epic and features Earth's Mightiest Heroes squaring off with an entire army of aliens. Some of them were familiar but others were new, and WETA Digital Visual Effects Supervisor Matt Aitken has now shed some light on who - and what - was on the battlefield.

As for those massive beasts, it turns out that they're Chitauri gorillas/heavies who were newly created for this movie. "We see the Chitauri leading them out by chains and then they set them free," Aitekn said. "These are not quite King Kong sized, but yeah, giant gorilla-ish, alien gorilla creatures who are a formidable force to be reckoned with on the battlefield."

He added that the rest of the Mad Titan's army was made up of the Outriders from Avengers: Infinity War and the Sakaarans from Guardians of the Galaxy

However, another army very nearly aligned themselves with the villain: Thor: The Dark World's Dark Elves! "At one point, there were going to be - potentially dark elves were going to show up, they didn’t make an appearance. The dark elves were mentioned, but we never got as far as rigging them or making them for the battle."

Avengers: Endgame didn't really need the Dark Elves, but it certainly would have made sense considering the fact that we revisited the God of Thunder's second solo adventure in the MCU.

Loved when Falcon stabbed one of those gorilla-things.

Hulk looked [frick]ing beautiful in this movie.

@RageDriver2401 - CGI-wise, yeah. I didn't really like the characterisation, I think it was too jockish.

@Nebula - Well Bruce was probably living the best time of his life since the accident that turned him to Hulk. He's in agreement with his alter ego, he's home, people love him and Ross isn't hunting him anymore. Everyone was living dreadful times, yes, but he of all people was not affected much.
I wonder if he tried to reach Betty, since she was dusted.
In any case, I don't want this to be permanent, as much as I enjoy it. We need to see savage Hulk again.

I would have loved if Thanos had somehow wrangled the Dark Elves, Ultron robots, Hela’s undead, etc. Every previous evil army we’ve seen all marching under Thanos’ banner would have been insane.

Probably would have gotten way too busy & fan service-y, but so cool lol

I would have loved if Capt. Marvel brought Skrulls, Kree, and some other galactic army with her when she came back. Could have been pretty neat.

"and the Sakaarans from Guardians of the Galaxy"

I think you mean Thor: Ragnarok.

@Whaley87 - Guardians actually. In the first movie they're who Yondu kills in the field with his 1 single arrow. Their ships in Endgame are the same as in Guardians 1. It is a bit weird they're Sakaaran given how Taika made them look in Ragnarok, though.

Yeah, the elves wouldn't have made as much sense, story-wise, but I've always, despite the movie being pretty bad, loved the look of those dark elves - the helmeted ears and especially those giant vacant eyes - very cool!
