Kevin Feige Responds To Backlash Over AVENGERS: ENDGAME Gay Character Reveal

Avengers: Endgame officially introduced the first gay character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but some took issue with how it was handled. Now, Marvel's Kevin Feige has responded to the backlash...

Although Avengers: Endgame did technically introduce the first openly gay character to the MCU (not counting the Netflix shows), the reveal turned out to be a little disappointing for a lot of fans.

In the post-snap support group scene, a character credited as "Grieving Man" reveals that he's gay while speaking to Steve Rogers about trying to get back in the dating game after The Decimation. It's a throwaway line with hardly any emphasis placed upon it, but some people still took issue with the scene. The fact that the character was played by straight co-director Joe Russo probably didn't help.

During an interview with io9, Kevin Feige was asked about the negative response from some fans.

“That was never meant to be our first focused character,” he said. “That was just meant to be a matter of fact and a matter of life and a matter of truth. And I liked it that our hero, Steve Rogers, doesn’t blink an eye at that fact. It is just truth and is heartbreaking for his loss and for the life he’s trying to put back together. It was never meant to be looked at as our first hero. I guess it’s the first reference so it does, of course, get a lot of attention.”

Feige has previously promised that an LGBT superhero would debut in the MCU at some point, and he reiterates that this is going to happen very soon. We've heard that The Eternals will feature an openly gay main character, but that's yet to be confirmed.

What do you guys make of Feige's comments? Let us know in the usual place, and have a look at what else the Marvel head honcho had to say about some Phase 4 projects and the future of the MCU.

Deadpool And The Other Fox Acquisitions

Feige confirmed that Marvel is now in the process of deciding how to go about introducing the X-Men and Fantastic Four into the MCU, and that he's having a lot of fun doing it. When asked about Deadpool, in particular, he shot down a recent rumor that the Merc with a Mouth might be introduced in the third Spider-Man movie or on one of the Disney+ shows.

"No, I mean we're certainly having conversations about the future of all of those Fox properties," Feige told ComicBook.com. "How to weave them in and when to weave them in. That one, in particular, is not the case."

To be honest, that rumor always seemed a bit sketchy anyway since we already know Deadpool will remain an R-rated property moving forward.

Black Widow

Feige also confirmed that the solo Black Widow film will be a prequel, which is hardly surprising after the character was killed off in Endgame. However, it does sound like there's going to be more to the movie than meets the eye.

"There’s a method to the madness," Feige explained when asked about the currently shooting project by io9, hinting that some previously unrevealed MCU secrets could come to light. "There’s always a method and doing things in an unexpected way is something we find fun. There are ways to do prequels that are less informative or answer questions you didn’t necessarily have, and then there are ways to do prequels where you learn all sorts of things you never knew before."

Feige then pointed to AMC's acclaimed drama Better Caul Saul as an example of "a prequel that almost completely stands on its own apart from Breaking Bad because it informs you about so many things you didn’t know about before."

Possible Spider-Man/Venom Crossover

Despite being shredded by critics, Venom turned out to be a massive success for Sony, and this has led to a lot of speculation that we will eventually see the character cross-over with a certain friendly neighborhood wall-crawler.

When asked about the possibility by CinemaBlend, Feige admitted that it "seems likely," but that the decision ultimately lies with Sony Pictures.

"I think probably it's up to Sony. Sony has both those characters and, has Venom in their world. I don't know what their plans are for another Venom or if they’re doing that. But it seems likely at some point."

Because Spidey 's adventures take place in the MCU, it can be easy to forget that a different studio ultimately has the final say on how the character is utilized. Hopefully the Marvel/Sony partnership continues beyond a third solo outing for the Webhead.

Despite Deadline's report that Marvel Studios would have a presence at SDCC's Hall H this year, Feige stopped short of confirming as much when asked about it outright by Fandango's Erik Davis. If they do show up, though, it sounds like there's going to be a lot of awesome stuff revealed during that panel.

@jmorin - i forget the exact words , but it's joe russo (the director) in the group speaking about a dinner date he has ... then he says "he" which implies he's gay .
people find problems with anything now ah days smh

@knocturnalzen10 - i dont understand how people are mad about a throwaway line of a no name character. Its a simple group talk to show how life is going on post-snap and people are mad about it in so many ways. Some are mad because Russo is straight, and because they didnt hire a gay actor its not authentic enough, and then others are mad that is a no name character and not a hero, then others are mad that its even in the film, then others are mad it wasnt more apparent he was gay - i mean he says he was on a date with another man, im pretty sure in every universe that means youre gay or something like it. People just love to complain about shit that doesnt matter.

@Gizmoduck -

Same thing. I still can't believe there could be backlash about an original character (they didn't even change a pre-existing character to bring a political message, which is the main reason people complain about most of the time) and a very minor one at that. He's just your average guy who deals with the loss of a loved one and who happens to be a homosexual (and I consider not making a big deal about it the very reason this scene actually works, gay people as random guys like in everyday life). And it didn't matter if the actor portraying him (the director, I know) is gay or straight, that's what the actor job is about.

Also, this is not the first example of a homosexual character in a superhero movie. As far as I remember, Negasonic Teenager Warhead and Yukio were the first ones and they were very well received despite being much more important characters in Deadpool 2 than this guy. Yukio was especially popular for being an absolute sweetheart, very funny and destroying pretty much every cliche about gay people.

@jmorin - Even if people notice it, whats the big deal, ITS ACTING! Seriously some people had problem with Ruby Rose playing batwoman because she wasn't "gay enough", since she isnt a full lesbian. Seriously it's like even when people are trying to be "progressive", they are still being intolerant dicks

@jmorin - many people (men in particular) get triggered over any reference to gay people existing... unless it involves lesbianism and a threesome with them in the middle... then they are seemingly alright with it... but the lesbians have to be with a man or its no deal...

...these types of people are really sad to live around

@JonC - I think the backlash Feige was referring to was from the more insufferable group of the gay community. Being gay myself I find them utterly frustrating. They're the kind of group that are constantly on the attack, even when they don’t need to be. Sadly, there is still a fight to be had, but they often pick the wrong ones.

Ayo is gay and Valkyrie is bi, but because it wasn't depicted on screen it's gay erasure. And since Russo's character was the first openly gay character in the MCU, they are annoyed that the character wasn't a superhero because Feige had mention that there will be an openly gay character in the MCU soon. He obviously meant for the Eternals, but they took it as Russo's character and felt cheated.
And then there's the whole "you have to be gay to act gay" movement which I find utterly ridiculous. It's called acting for a reason. If a heterosexual person doesn't do an offensive stereotype, I really don't care if they are playing a gay character. It shouldn't matter.

@jmorin -
Effectively it was a badly written scene that felt out of place where they are meant to be talking about the implications of the snap and people trying to move on with life - but instead the movie stops to have the director talk about a dinner date.

I did not mind it personally, but considering how terribly they have consistently portrayed gay characters in this franchise so far it comes across as another method of pretending to be inclusive without actually delivering. Similar to how Valkyrie was meant to be gay in Ragnarok or how Captain Marvel is meant to be gay.

In reality, MCU's only display gay characters have been depicted as rapists in prison. It's absolutely disgusting treatment of gay characters.

I think people need to leave their houses more if a 2 minute scene in a movie upset them. Maybe travel to a third-world country and witness economic inequality, disease, and ACTUAL human suffering perhaps?
