Based partially on speculation and a tweet from actor Clark Gregg, who portrays SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson in Marvel's Cinematic Universe, the crossover spectacle The Avengers may have recruited a new cast member. Gregg's Tweet reads:

Brit Marling is considered the "It-Girl" at this year's Sundance, co-writing & starring lead in two films Another Earth & Sound of My Voice. As for her Avengers role, being that this is sourced from a 'SHIELD Agent', she could be apart of the extra-government intelligence & security organization. Who do you think?

Again, this tweet could have been misinterpreted, but The Avengers assembles Robert Downey Jr., Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Clark Gregg, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, and Kevin Pennington. And commencing filming in April, the team hits the big-screen May 4, 2012 in 3D!

Sharon Carter didn't even cross my mind. If that is who she's playing, then perfect casting. I think that might hint towards The Avengers being told from Cap's perspective.

Sharon Carter, I'll bet anything. If it's her I hope she does the character justice, Agent 13 has always been one of my favourites.

im gonna say Sharon Carter, i dont see why they would bring in another hero(danvers) without establishing them first with a solo film. so im gonna say Sharon is the best posible choice

She's been receiving a lot of buzz because of her role in two really big Sundance films. She's certainly attractive enough to play Sharon Carter. But WTF is up with her teeth? I feel like she wants to suck my blood!

Isn't Hayley Atwell supposed to portray Sharon Carter, because both Peggy and Sharon share a resemblance?

@Xenix, isn't Clark Gregg a director?I'm sure he's cast actors before, so maybe they thought it would be good to have him in on it.Or, maybe he's just the one reading with the actors.

she's pretty much unkown at this point. she has only acted in two films that were at the Sundance film festival. she hasnt really done anything major and absoulutly no tv roles soooo this could be her big break if its true

I know she's playing Peggy.I was saying because Peggy and Sharon share a close resemblance, and because Atwell is signed for multiple movies, she would also be playing Sharon.

@tazmaniak & InSpace - You're both right. Peggy Atwell will play both Peggy and Sharon Carter if they decide to introduce that character. They are supposed to look almost identical. My bet for this chick would be Carol Danvers or an outside shot at the future Barbara Morse Barton aka Mockingbird.

And those who say she could play Maria Hill... the only thing this girl shares with Maria Hill is the fact that both of them are women.
