When it comes to keeping up with all the news surrounding a film as large as The Avengers, it is difficult to keep up with everything, especially the mass of interviews. That's why sites like this exist - to do the work for you.
ScreenRant recently posted a gem of a junket interview. In it, Clark Gregg discusses his character's representation in the film,
It was spectacularly gratifying because I know I stumbled into a small role in Iron Man that got bigger and bigger and became a number of movies. I am a fanboy and I grew up loving Marvel comics so to be there I feel like I won some prize at Comic-Con.
Cobie Smulders explains where she wants to see Maria Hill go from here,
I won't know anything until I'm literally on set, but I would like to be a part of anything that S.H.I.E.L.D. is a part of. It's a cool thought to lead S.H.I.E.L.D., but I would be sad to see Nick Fury go at the same time.
and Clark Gregg talks about the future of the MCU, including some hints at what sounds a lot like the Guardians of the Galaxy (italics added by me for emphasis).
There might be another direction as well, represented in my opinion, as a fanboy, some of the villains we see here represent some other directions Marvel Comics took, but that's just me guessing as a fanboy...it wouldn't be enough if it was just muscles and suits. There seems to be some real ideas about what it means to consider yourself a guardian and the presumption that requires...
Do you think he's alluding to the rumored Guardians of the Galaxy movie Marvel is working on? Considering the villains he's talking about are plural, meaning the aliens, and a decidedly pregnant pause after "guardians," my guess is he's expecting to see much more of Marvel's cosmic side from here on out. Marvel branching the MCU into two paths seems like the next logical step on some counts, and could provide room for a ton of new characters on the screen. We'll just have to wait and find out. That won't stop us speculating in the meantime, though!
