ILM Visual Effects Supervisor Jeff White On Potentially Bringing THE AVENGERS' Hulk To TV

Talking in-depth about the visual effects for the Joss Whedon-helmed superhero ensemble, Industrial Light & Magic VFX Supervisor Jeff White also shared some info on the transition between big screen and television for the Hulk...

Marvel's The Avengers was a monster at the box office this summer. So far, it grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide, and it's the highest-grossing film of the year. One of the best parts of the film was Bruce Banner/Hulk (played brilliantly by Mark Ruffalo), where director Joss Whedon made this character in a way that we have all been waiting for. The talented VFX artists at Industrial Light & Magic were the ones who made the Green Goliath belivable, and the results were quite breathtaking. Now, talking to High-Def Digest about the whole process of making visuals for this film, ILM Animation Director Marc Chu and Visual Effects Supervisor Jeff White shared a lot of information on Iron Man's suit, CG version of New York City, what was the most challenging shot of the film and much more. You can read all that by clicking the source below. One thing that caught my eye was the question about the planned HULK television series and whether or not would ILM be able to work on it and if the character would be the same as in The Avengers. Here is what White had to say:

"I think we’d have to have a lot of banter. I think from beginning to end we got much faster at doing shots. We learned a lot about the process and about how to light him and how to make him look good. One of the things that was interesting was when we started off we kind of took our typical approach of really art directing the lighting, like rim, rim, rim, you know super stylized. And he really looked fake and popped out. And what we found is that we ended up having to kind of flatten out his lighting to get him to sit in there with the rest of the Avengers.

So I think after learning things like that, if you’re talking about a TV schedule and how fast you need to turn around production, it would be a matter of trying to build off everything we did for the movie and then get him in there, get him lit. You wouldn’t have time to do all the really detailed shape and frame corrections we do."

White also talked about what would they improve with the Hulk in The Avengers 2:

"A lot of the hair was difficult, especially his hair design and how different it came out in each shot. I think there’s more that we can push as far as the simulation of his skin and the muscles underneath. And some of the shots, especially where he’s at a mid-ground, those are some of the toughest for us to solve in terms of the sweat starts to look a little plasticy and things like that. If we can start from the basis we have now – there were shots like the close-up smile where we got a long way, but we wanted to add little spit bubbles in between his gums and things that we see in photo reference that there just wasn’t time for. So I think it would be great to have another opportunity to keep pushing that forward."

Starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, & directed by Joss Whedon, “Marvel’s The Avengers” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 25th. The sequel is set for May 1, 2015 release.

I'm confused is the Hulk tv series MCU or not?

@marvelstudios: I think when it was announced it wasn't intended to be but after Hulk's sudden surge in popularity following the movie, they may attempt to do so.

I hope its not in the MCU, then they would have to get a different Banner. I want a TIH2!!!

I don't know why Marvel doesn't get right into production on TIH2. Everyone wants to see it!

@Optimus:
He hasn't been cast yet.

I want to see them stick to movies with the Hulk. You could create a TV show similar to the Bixby/Ferrigno version but if some of the production quality that we go in the Avengers is dropped will it feel as genuine and real?

I can see a tv series but knowing that you want he rest of the Marvel Universe to come into play then you have new problems every week of more CGI. Rulk, She-Hulk, and the rest of Hulk's foes need to be as realistic and believeable as he is. I don't see that happening like it can for a the SHIELD series.

But there's an idea, have Ruffalo/Hulk show up on the SHIELD series to test his television popularity in a few episodes and then branch out if the ratings are hot.

Wouldn't it be Hulk 3? The Leader with giant robotic machines! General Ross and the Hulkbusters, Rick Jones, Doc Sampson, and She Hulk! Just do it!

First Hulk doesn't count, not a Marvel Studios movie.

There are too many budget constraints with television, just do a solo Hulk movie. Make Leader and Madman the villains.
MisterMagurlypse
MisterMagurlypse - 9/12/2012, 10:41 AM
Yeah, I don't think a Hulk TV show would work very well. Way too much CGI needed and to do it right would make the budget skyrocket. Then they would cut corners elsewhere. They need to develop characters like Daredevil, Luke Cage or Spider Woman for TV. Love Hulk though!!

Just write one season arc. Go through the pages and mark all the CGI Hulk scenes. Send them to these guys and have them make those scenes while you shoot the footage. Then release it later. Do not do this like a normal tv show, release the episodes long after they are shot and spend more time on them the CGI to make them good. You could make it eight 60 minute episodes.

Mark Ruffalo was trash as Banner/Hulk!!! Bring back Norton!

I wish ILM could do the CGI for the Hulk TV series, but of course, you apparently have to have an episode each week. Then again, ILM could conceivably get a smaller team to do the visual effects months or even a year in advance.

An 10 episode series would be fine. Leading to the next Hulk feature. Then do a Spider-Woman or captain Marvel series. You could do a high sci-fi Captain Marvel series introducing the Kree with Carol Danvers as the love interest and then feature a Ms. Marvel film for Avengers.

I used to think how would it be to have Norton back in Avengers... But after watching it I began to think what would've been like having Ruffalo in TIH.

Sorry folks...Mark Ruffalo is way too bland of an actor to carry a Hulk movie. Only way that works is if he is Hulk 95% of the time in the movie and Hulk talks...aside from that...GET NORTON BACK!!!

I have to agree with some of you, the tv show should be shelved in favor of the film franchise.

On a side note, am I the only one who thinks that this Hulk was flat out ugly? Loved Ruffalo and I thought the Hulk stole the movie, but that mug of his is Elephant Man quality.
poop23
poop23 - 9/13/2012, 12:21 AM
@DrainBamage I actually somewhat feel the same about the avengers hulk. I think they did a great job on the cg, but I don't think it had the look of the perfect hulk that everybody says he is.

I think the model from the last film allowed some better facial expressions, and is not nearly as terrible as people say it is. Not saying that its better than the new one though, I'd just like to something between the two

@kemuael Oh, I want a sequel to the Incredible Hulk as well. But come on, man!!! At least try and give the new show a chance!!!!! This tv serious has potential being a huge hit.

But in general, I am most certainly looking forward to the TV series in the future and as a long-time Hulk fan, I will support it with all my being :)

hey guys, i've been following this site for ages now but for some reason i have only JUST made an account.

and i think that this may be concerned to the S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series. hulk might have a cameo, like 2 or 3 episodes, that kind of thing. like maybe bruce (portrayed by ruffalo) hulks out and S.H.I.E.L.D. send some agents to make sure he doesn't harm anyone.
