Joe Cornish Unsure Whether Ant-Man Will Appear In The Avengers!

The writer reveals that while work on the script has gone well, he actually has no idea whether the character might pop up in The Avengers, and refuses to reveal what kind of tone the solo flick might have...

Talking to fans via an online webchat with Empire Online, the writer was quizzed about the supposedly planned Marvel Studios movie, Ant-Man. Here what he had to say about the chances of the character making an appearence in The Avengers next year as well as his response when quizzed on the tone of the solo movie. To hear more from Cornish on his latest movie, Attack the Block, follow the link below.

Hey Joe! What's going on with Ant Man? Will he get a cameo in The Avengers?

When it comes to Ant Man, I am only a humble writer, so I can't speak with any authority on that matter. But I can say that Edgar and I are very excited about our script. I've been working on Attack the Block non-stop for the last year and a half, so I'm not up to date on the latest Avengers developments, but I am pretty confident it will be amazing with or without Ant Man.

Does Antman have a serious tone like Dark knight or is it more comic in style?

Can't say. Don't want to give anything away. I believe movies are better, the less you know going in.

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Rufallo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Tom Hiddleston as Loki, The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

AntMan. Hm, who cares. Hey, an Antman tv show could get Terminix as a sponsor!

That's a good point. These days it is hard not to know almost everything about a movie while going in.

They would be better off calling this movie HANK PYM.

An Ant-Man film is not going to cause much noise among comic fans. The character carries too much baggage emotionally to be that exciting and if they go the Ultimate way which much probably they will he's going to be even much m,ore of a jerk. Sorry but I pass.

As much as I would like to see him in the Avengers I would like it better if he wasn't but they made a Ant-man/wasp and Black panther movies then put them in the avengers 2

I'd quite like to see antman as a 60's spy movie (not a popular choice I know) and then have someone else pick up the moniker (Eric O'grady??) for the SHIELD tie in.

I think it would give it an interesting individual tone whilst telling us what was happening in the Marvel Movie Universe around that time.

Unfortunately, I think if this were turned into a movie it would be a complete bust. He isn't a popular character and hopefully they have some sort of easter egg or cameo in the Avengers.

Ha! I've got no hate for the "Man of Ants"; just indifference. How about, "Paint-Dry Man" or "Bore-a-tron"! Now, THOSE, would be more interesting.

My pick for a Marvel movie; I'd REALLY like to see the Starjammers!

Ant Man is a textbook example of a guy that works in comics but would fail at the big screen. A shallow, self-absorbed geek with anger management issues, domestic abuse charges, and a weird sexual infatuation with robots? And that would be the lead?

Yeah not gonna work. Maybe for some artsy director in some low budget Cannes film, but not a true CBM. His old lady is just as uninteresting too. No to Wasp and Ant Man in Avengers.

The only thing Ant Man is good for is introducing the villian Ultron. That's it. And with the movies any scientist can create Ultron and it would be okay.

Im not really Big on Ant-Man, so I hope he gets left out of The Avengers. At least the first film... The character is okay, but I am not a fan at all...

Besides: Make mine DC!!!

I would say cast him in along with Wasp and the Black Panther for Avengers 2. I think it would be perfect or they could do a Black Panther Movie, with Ant-man, Wasp and The Klaw as the villian.

I think you guys are underestimating Mr. Pym. For a VERY long time, people believed Mr. Fantastic would be impossible to bring into live action. And while the end result wasn't too great in the acting/appearance departments, it was well done with the effects and the fleshing out of Reed's genius.

Pym appearing with a cooler, tweaked version of his costume from Avengers:EMH, along with the same personality/character traits from the show, would make Hank Pym, in my opinion, and excellent addition to the team. Although I am personally hoping for the impossible, Black Panther.

comicb00kguy - 5/16/2011, 8:58 AM
SpideyQuad: My objection to an Ant-Man movie has nothing to do with any dislike for Hank Pym. As I've said here before, he's just not a character that will carry much interest to mainstream non-comic reading audiences. Pym is one of those guys that can be a great character in an ensemble cast (and he's certainly a useful guy to have around, either as Ant-Man, Giant Man, or both, as we see him in the cartoon now and have seen for many years in the Avengers comics), but he's just not strong enough to carry a movie by himself.

I do think that a successful film could be made from the short-lived but VERY funny Irredeemable Ant-Man". Play it as a dark comedy, it could be a great twist on the superhero film that might appeal to more of the mainstream audience.

Pym brings a dynamic that is already being somewhat filled by Tony Stark. Ant-Man would be better suited as a nod in the first movie, and added to the team in the second movie as he introduces the team to his latest robotic invention, Ultron, who in-turn creates his own robot to spread havok throughout the land, Vision!
Hawksblueyes
Hawksblueyes - 5/16/2011, 9:31 AM
plasticman: I have to disagree with your Pym/Stark dynamic. If anything Pym brings a dynamic that could be compared to Reed Richards more than Stark.

blablabla for nothing.. always the same thing for years when someone ask for Ant-Man news.
It's frustrating.

How is it difficult to do a cameo scene with a CGI small man on the shoulder of Nick Fury and a small woman flying around him. We don't have to see their faces: we have a cameo of a CGI Captain America in The Incredible Hulk, so why not?

Nooo Ant-Man! The concept behind the character is lame! Now, Giant-Man, that's a completely different story right there! Don't be stupid Marvel, do the right thing!

Nice find though Josh, check out my X-Men fan cast if u got the chance!

Antman's a quality character. There's more depth to the character than simply his powers! Although as far as Cornish thinking that Antman will sneak onto the big screen without people knowing little about him...fat chance! Marvel will advertise and promote the shit out of it!

After Selvig alluding toward him in Thor i hope he gets a small airing in The Avengers!
Dakjaniels
Dakjaniels - 5/16/2011, 10:09 AM
Maybe if he's just Hank Pym. Make him a shield scientist who works with banner, dr selvig, and stark. Give him a couple of lines and that's all you would need.
Chewtoy
Chewtoy - 5/16/2011, 10:10 AM
Ant-Man and Wasp will only cameo in the Avengers if the Ant-man movie goes into production before the Avengers is completed.

I don't believe they'll pick anyone for the roles just to do a cameo in The Avengers... they'll want to take their time casting them just as they did with Thor or Captain America and let the director of that film pick his lead actors.

However, if they like where the Ant-man script is (and the box office returns on Captain America and Thor are promising), there's no reason to believe they won't go into production on it late this year or early next year, which would allow plenty of time to film a self-containted "Hawkeye in Thor" kind of cameo for The Avengers.

Chewtoy - 5/16/2011, 10:17 AM
And for all of the people thinking that Ant-man wouldn't appeal to the masses, I have no idea what you're thinking. Ant-man is a premise that people grasp instantly, and Hollywood has made films about people shrinking or growing regularly for as long as films have existed (the last version, or close enough, being Jack Black's horrible Gulliver's Travels).

Being tiny captures the public's imagination, and is a far more easily grasped subject than Norse godhood or energy constructs being shot from a ring.

Pym should Cameo in the Film and should have a showcase of his powers as both Giant Man & Ant-Man. But he really doesn't need a Movie unless they do what Comicb00kguy recommended above.

@ weneedrevelation: That is Pym's personality in the 616 universe as well. He is the only character that seemed exactly the same.
