Kevin Feige Describes THE AVENGERS As Being From Nick Fury's Point Of View

In a lengthy chat which covers both Tony Stark and Nick Fury's place in The Avengers, Kevin Feige, Jeremy Latcham, Joss Whedon, Robert Downey Jr. and Samuel L. Jackson reveal plenty of tantalising new details about the movie and the roles their characters play in it.

"Robert is a tour de force as Tony Stark and he injects that confidence and sense of humor that brought to life and defined the character in the best way possible in both ‘Iron Man’ films," said Marvel Studios' President and producer of Marvel's The Avengers, Kevin Feige. "We wanted to give Robert scenes with all the characters as we knew it would be a lot of fun to watch Tony’s interaction with Captain America, Thor and The Hulk. When Robert walks on the screen, the audiences embrace him in a very big and palpable way; he really is a powerhouse for us and the film."

Robert Downey Jr. meanwhile didn't begin to even contemplate going on to star in The Avengers until the night that Iron Man opened all the way back in 2008. "I remember when we were all huddled around the dinner table waiting for the numbers to come in. We had planted some ideas after the credits of the film, hinting at the notion of ‘The Avengers’ and in Hollywood, I’m always amazed when anything that difficult works out." As for how Iron Man feels about the prospect of joining a "superhero boy band," the actor said, "Tony initially thinks it’s ridiculous, but being Tony Stark, he is more open to the realm of possibilities that exist in the world of ‘The Avengers.’ Tony already had hints of it from Nick Fury who has been stringing him along for a while about becoming part of a larger universe."

The executive producer of the superhero ensemble, Jeremy Latcham, adds, "At the end of the day he is Tony Stark and he understands the severity of the situation. He’s willing to make the ultimate sacrifice but at the same time, he’s kind of enamored by the absurdity of it. As a result, Tony Stark really is the audience’s way in because he is the closest thing to a normal person among the Super Heroes. That’s saying a lot because Tony Stark is a billionaire, playboy, philanthropist, who drinks too much, but is really funny and entertaining, which works out nicely."

Of course, it was Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury (director of S.H.I.E.L.D.) who was the one chosen to introduce Tony Stark to a much larger universe in Iron Man's after-credits scene. However, after making brief appearances in Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger, Feige knew that The Avengers would be the perfect opportunity to shine the spotlight on both Jackson and Fury. "The promise we made to Sam was when we got to ‘The Avengers’ it would be his time to shine. Sam was very pleased when he got the script and saw how many great scenes Nick Fury had in the film. He is very active and in command on the Helicarrier and really gets into the action. If I had to say which character’s point of view the film is told from it would be Nick Fury’s."

"It’s great to be the guy who is the organizer of The Avengers team," says Samuel L. Jackson on his expanded role in the film. "He’s the guy who has the raison-d’être that kind of understands the threat and has to get them to understand the nature of the threat; that we’re a lot stronger together than they are individually. Using Coulson in a manipulative way to get them to do what he needs them to do is not above Nick’s character. He does kind of fudge the truth a bit to get them to take the bait and join in, and eventually they all do."

Director Joss Whedon had this to say when asked about why he has such admiration for the actor who will be his Nick Fury. "I always think that there are two of him because he is famous for the sort of bravado ‘Pulp Fiction’ speechifying guy who can out-moxie anybody in the room. Before we started shooting the film I told Sam my biggest note to remember was ‘less Shaft, more Glass [Jackson’s character in “Unbreakable].’ I wanted to see a guy who could absolutely command a room with his voice that leaves no question of who is in charge of this enormous organization. I am also a huge ‘Unbreakable’ fan, so I’m also very much in love with the great depth and well of sadness that he can bring to the character as well."

Man this movie sure does shift point of views. First they said it was from Steves, the marketing makes it seem like its from Tonys, and now its Nick Fury. What next? Will the twist be that its secretly all from the point of view of that blonde waitress?

Still thought it was better when they said it was gonna be from Caps point of view, but since Whedon said that idea changed after editing the film, i guess its from Fury's now

One thing is for sure, i really ike the role Fury has in the trailers and tv spots, his words remind us of the seriousness and depth of the threat. Without him, we would probably get lost see the movie as just the superheroes fighting the villain and his goons, but it's a lot more than that and I hope Fury, and hopefully other characters too, can make the real scope of the film more evident.

God I REALLY hope this doesn't become Iron man and friends because based on the marketing and stuff it makes me worry that it is. Dont get me wrong I love RDJ but too much of him is kind of annoying ESPECIALLY when its a team film.

I think the real question is... who has the most scenes, i think it might be Ironman, but they would probably tell it from both Nick's & Cap's points of view

@TheBlackWidow, I couldn't agree more. I want this to stand apart and be it's own thing than be Thor 2 or Iron Man 3.. 'and friends' as you put it LOL

I still can't believe I'm going to be seeing this in a few weeks.

Guys, please check out my first article! I'm still kinda new at this. It's an awesome close-up of a foot soldier of Loki's army!

@KingEmperor - that's what keeping me worried (seems like another IM sequel with a few guest stars in it)

@TheBlackWidow - my thoughts exactly, i have much respect for RDJ as a seasoned star but having too much of him/IM/Tony would ruin the concept of the film being about the TEAM. I felt bad that it would no longer be told on Caps perspective as again, (my fear, to be told on IM's perspective) but hearing it would be from Nick's then i guess it's alright.Just 26 days away till it's shown in our home turf...still waiting....whoooooo!

It's called MARKETING. Why do we see RDJ and IM in the promotion the most? Hmm, I don't know, let me think about that one. That's what marketing does, promotes the film the best way so it would appeal to EVERYONE, not JUST the fans. How hard is to understand that?

Oh and...

That is all.

@TheBlackWidow How funny would it be if it really was from the point of view of that waitress? The first 2 hours are just serving coffee and cashing out checks, then all of the sudden aliens attack NYC. Then Joss Whedon pulls off his mask Scooby-Doo style to reveal that he's actually Andy Kaufman!

P.S. I think they're just saying that to butter him up because Marvel knows what Samuel L. Jackson doesn't seem to: they'll never make a Nick Fury movie...

MadTitan
MadTitan - 3/30/2012, 6:21 PM
@WolvieCBM - point taken, but really i think that's an overkill. You have a set of well known comic book characters there with their own fan base and the fact that they're pushing for someone ahead of the other's just a bit too much is not good. Someone's been trying to even diminished or at least put the Captain aside in the promos (promo posters)well bad thing is it didn't look good at all. enough with the conspiracy theory there though i'm still seeing it but would be back if it turns out in fact all about Tin Man and not the A-V-E-N-G-E-R-S!
WolvieCBM
WolvieCBM - 3/30/2012, 6:26 PM
Chard7: Again, you are looking at it the wrong way. GA is not aware who is the leader of the team, and all that stuff. They don't care about that. Putting Cap front and center on promos and whatever, JUST because he is portrayed like that in the comics, wouldn't do much good. RDJ is the massive appeal for the film, and everyone needs to understand that.

Shark Boy, you are funny, like really funny.

I'm starting to think that this film is from everyone's POV, not just one character's. Remember, this is an ensemble film, therefore, everyone should be the main focus. With Joss at the helm, I feel like that's what we're gonna get.
MadTitan
MadTitan - 3/30/2012, 6:35 PM
WolvieCBM - "...Putting Cap front and center on promos and whatever, JUST because he is portrayed like that in the comics, wouldn't do much good"
--on the contrary, seeing something familiar would prove to be the best approach as GA could easily identify what's being offered.

"RDJ is the massive appeal for the film" - i resent that if it's an Iron Man film it is. It's about the TEAM (and being about the team, the individual needs to have they're own proper promos not on an individual.
rockerdude22
rockerdude22 - 3/30/2012, 6:40 PM
Guys, Iron Man is NOT the main focus of the film. A while ago, Joss said that he and RDJ originally thought of doing that, but they scrapped this because IT DIDN'T WORK! Therefore, Iron Man is not the main focus. I can't stress that enough.
WolvieCBM
WolvieCBM - 3/30/2012, 6:40 PM
Chard7: Correct, film is about the team, but what they have been doing with the marketing so far sure has been proven to be one hell of a great job. And if putting RDJ and IM in promos the most will get people to see the film, then there is no need at all to change the strategy. Just because we (fans) want something, doesn't mean it's a good idea.
Mrcool210
Mrcool210 - 3/30/2012, 6:41 PM
NO, WRONG, TRY AGAIN
MadTitan
MadTitan - 3/30/2012, 6:54 PM
WolvieCBM: that is of course your opinion, and i respect that. you can't attribute the sole success of the promos alone to RDJ's credit because again it's about the team and you have a bunch of folks there that had their own fans (Evans, Hemsworth, Jackson, Johannson... so that's being a bit one sided). And for some reasons a film fails because the suits thinks what they thought is best for marketing would work for the fans and the GA in general but the thing is you can't have the film without considering what the fans would want to see.
