More From Joss Whedon On THE AVENGERS

In more from the interview with Entertainment Weekly Joss Whedon expanded on his Comments about The Avengers being from Captain America's perspective calling him the "ultimate loner".

Yesterday JoshW posted a blurb from the interview Joss Whedon did with Entertainment Weekly where he said that The Avengers will take place mostly from Captain America's point of view. Now they have posted the full interview where Whedon says that all The Avengers are loners but Captain America is the ultimate loner, and that him and Chris Evans have worked really hard to keep Cap the 40's Steve Rogers we saw in his solo movie.

“[The Avengers] is very much about people who are alone — because I’m writing it.[Captain America] is kind of the ultimate loner in that way. There is an anachronism to him, and Chris and I have always tried to make it, without making it goofy or too obvious, always tried to make him that same grounded ’40s Steve Rogers he was in the other movie.”

Whedon also said that just because its told from the perspective of Captain America, don't expect him to be the main character. Going on to say all the characters have an equal share in the movie, and that they will have to work together to solve the problem at hand.

“You get them in a world, the world of S.H.I.E.L.D., where they fit in. And you say, upfront, these are monsters. These are freaks. These are not you and me, and what are they doing here? How are they human beings? Let’s just investigate that.”

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Stellan Skarsgård , Samuel L. Jackson, and will be released on May 4, 2012.

FIRST! - (always wanted to say that) ^^

... I wouldn't call The Hulk or Thor a monster or a freak to their face. Stark i might, if he was drunk.

I like how Wheadon speaks in tongues, but I still don't know if I like him, never liked anything he's had his name on so far

If that's the case, I wouldn't hold out too much hope of liking The Avengers! I mean sure Marvel's fingerprints will be on it, but at the end of the day it WILL be a Whedon movie, and if you don't like his style then that's that.

You don't like Firefly, Serenity, Astonishing X-Men, Runaways?

Awesome ensemble writer. The movie will be awesome as well.

Hey mini-bane just said something unintelligable. Why don't you go try and figure out what it was and leave the real superhero movies to us.

Although i'm looking forward to this movie I AM NOT looking forward to the constant onslaught of hype thats gonna be starting up here shortly with all of the marketing. I'm just gonna have to be disciplined and not read every Avengers article that gets posted here. Its gonna be tough

@coldblood6 thanks for instigating a TDKR/Avengers fight, we all really enjoy those around here. *fart*

@ror, I wouldn't go that far. The characters have already been established, he can't take them that far from what they already are. Just because I don't like Buffy or anything else in his catalog doesn't mean it's gonna be anything like his previous work. That's like a band sounding exactly the same on every album. People change there style to fit there mood and there ideas. Besides its the fn avengers!!!

There can be only one whiny guy here. And this is Grif.

I like the psychological exploration aspect in his approach to develop the character's together. I think that's VERY smart!
It helps the audience to emotionally invest in them and thus care about them. Ultimately the movies' about people and their lives rather that a action-packed orgy.(Transformers anyone?) The action is implicit.

Ps do you guys think Sharon carter is gonna b caps love interest in the avengers? I relised that's who the girl is at the end of the first avenger

The director and screenwriter MUST take us- the audience- into the heart and mind of the characters so we can identify with them on a personal/ human level.

That's the big mistakes with CBM's- those in charge of 'whatever' film are wayyyy to co-dependent on resorting to gratuitous actions scenes and cheesy, cliched dialog.

@headlooper - well said

@jesse - if she's not specifically his love interest I understand we'll see some interesting scenes involving her and steve, even if just talking about her grandma.

@lorddarkseid - grif is public property. he's like a national anthem of cbm. don't hate him.

Not sure I agree with what Whedon says. "These are freaks. These are not you and me, and what are they doing here? How are they human beings?"

Um, Marvel heroes are as flawed as humans and that's what makes them relatable from the get-go. So what's there to investigate. They are already very human in terms of personality.

I think Whedon is the best man for the job. He is great at ensemble movie/TV projects and that's what this is. Ever since IM and Hulk came out and we as fanboys knew that it would eventually lead to the Avengers I thought that Whedon would be perfect for it.

I hope this film is fantastic, but at this point I have serious doubts. Where's a new trailer? The film is coming out in less than 4 months.
Nemesys

I don't care what anyone says(the Nolanites, DC fanboys, Marvel fanboys, etc - and just for full disclosure, I'm not a Whedonite or any other kind of -ite), this is the fricking AVENGERS movie people!! This will be THE blockbuster CBM of the year! And yes, that means it will outperform TDKR (there, I said it)! The only movie, CBM or otherwise, that may beat it is.... The Hobbit.

Your Nemesys has spoken.

I'd like to echo what redleaf wrote - these guys aren't freaks or monsters, but they definitely aren't your average joes either and figuring out how to relate to an average joe when you turn green when angry has to be a challenge. Maybe that is what Joss meant.

Any-who, I like his work especially the way his characters interact with each other. Firefly/Serenity had some very different characters with different agendas and personalities, but they pulled together for the greater good. So, I have high hope for The Avengers.

@ironman53 I'm worried. Worried as holy hell, and I live Whedon. There's a good reason to be worried, especially when you're expecting a certain level of decency.

This will be a step-back for ensemble CBMs and the CBM industry as a whole if it doesn't come out short of spectacular.

Plus, it will be the jumping start for a Hulk sequel, and the interest in any other sequel for that matter.

I just can't live through another X-Men 3 experience. I just...I just can't.

@Empress - I think you can at least count on Marvel Studio's masterplan, disregarding any director they chose. And I think Whedon was apparently a very good choice.
TheHitchhikingGhost
TheHitchhikingGhost - 1/13/2012, 1:11 PM
@EmpressSkeith: I could not ask for any other director to deliver a great comic book movie of this sort under this kind of pressure. Your worry is justified, but Whedon is going to bring this home.

@jessepostal I hope so. It might not happen in the first one but by the sequels people will know her backstory and how her aunt was once Cap's love interest. Can't wait for that storyline to make it on screen, and well let's face it...Amanda is gorgeous!
