Nathan Fillion Says He's Still Too Busy For A Role In The Avengers!

While praising the director who he's collaborated with several times over the years, the Castle star was asked whether he'll have a role in Joss Whedon's The Avengers and his answer was unfortunately not good...

Although it was reported just a few weeks before Comic-Con that Nathan Fillion had signed to star as Hank Pym in The Avengers, fans were upset to find out during the convention that those rumours were seemingly false when both director Joss Whedon and Fillion himself denied that he would have a role in the 2012 epic.

Unfortunately, the following bit of news will do nothing to make those of us that were disappointed by that any better. In a recent interview about the hit TV show, Castle, with Collider the actor was once again quizzed on whether he'll be in the movie. He insisted that he's just too busy!

Are you hoping that Joss might find a role for you in The Avengers?

"That would be a lovely fantasy. The fact is that I’m on Castle right now, and that’s 10 months out of the year. So, unless they’re filming for two months, on my months off, there’s just no possible way it could logistically be done."

Personally, I think that Nathan Fillion would make a fantastic Ant-Man. However, recent reports seem to indicate that Edgar Wright wants to introduce the character in his own solo movie first and it's clear from the Firefly stars comment above that he probably wont have time to portray the Marvel superhero at any point in the near future!

If they go the animated route with Ant-man(which is what I believe, they've been planning), it would be easier to work with his schedule and have him do the voice, which would be a great setup to have him introduced in to the live action films later on.

Great find Josh! I love hearing Nathan talk about Ant-Man. It's perfect casting. Lately, I'm kinda liking the idea of not jamming Ant-man & Wasp in The Avengers just yet though. That's if Whedon & Marvel aren't jerking our chains. But I still think Nathan & Eva Longoria, or Morena Baccarin would work out.

I would like to see him do that, but Castle is a hit show, He needs to do that, plus Stana Katic is a hottie, shes too hot to leave LOL

DCMF: Thanks man! Ever since the rumours of Fillion's involvement began and I finally sat down and watched Firefly, I too have thought that he's the perfect choice for this role! And as disappointed as I feel about Whedon seemingly not including Hank and Jan in The Avengers, it does make sense to introduce them in a solo movie rather than cram them into that film...however, that really makes me wish that they'd have made that already! :P

marcolanni: Yes, but Fillion previously said he was two busy in interviews that took place nearly two months ago...this was done a few days ago and is an update of sorts - hence the headline stating that he is "still too busy" to star in The Avengers. And are you seriously complaining about the amount of news posted on CBM? That's the whole point of this site - we round up comic book movie news from all over the internet and put it in one place. It's always fun to see people like you (who post nothing) whine though!

Intruder: Lol, believe me mate - it killed me to write this article for the same reason! That day during Comic Con where Whedon said Fillion would play Ant-Man was like a fanboy dream come true and a few hours later, it was debunked as a joke...I'm still hoping that he'll have a role in the movie personally. Does it really take 10 months to film a TV show!?

I'm glad you finally watched FIREFLY @ JOSH!!!

Btw theres no reason in hell FILLION can't play a cameo role of HANK PYM in AVENGERS, even if its just a two minute segment, pity that CASTLE series sucks! : P

(or Patrick Wilson! : p)

P.S. Same goes with a quick cameo of JAN too (The Wasp)

GUNSMITH @ Take your WELLING loving butt outta here! ; D

Awesome stuff Josh. As a fan of Castle I am not to depressed about this, because it shows he is dedicated to his show. As awesome as he is for the role, we could always have Patrick Wilson or Alan Tudyk(Always liked him for the role more than Fillion). Plus I hope they plan a reboot for Jonah Hex in the near future, Because Adam Baldwin is perfect for the role(Something I plan on doing an editorial for).

I appreciate that Antman and the Wasp are important aspects of the Avengers mythos in the comics but I just don't see how it would translate into this movie. I could see it if they are setting up future films and they introduce the characters but I would be more accepting if it was just as Hank Pym. Not sure I really care about a guy who can shrink and telepathically communicate with ants or if they are going to go down the Giant man route. For this movie where they seem to be going for a more modern feel it just seems a little hokey. Plus how many characters can they use? we will already have the interactions with the rest of the cast, I would rather they dealt with the cast they have and flesh them out properly rather than just throw in extra characters just to appease the hardcore fan base. The Avengers have had so many additions over the years that people will always have some of their favourites who can't be included and yeah its dissapointing but overall, for me anyway the main characters I have always looked out for are Cap, Iron Man, Thor and the Hulk.

You obviously dont appreciate good tv shows, Castle is brilliant. Mostly due to Fillion and Stana Katic. Better than most of the shit on tv

@Moltenman None of these characters are realistic. They are all hokey in their own way, and translating Hank Pym into a character for the silver screen would be difficult, but not impossible. There are a lot of very human qualities that the Pyms have and these other character's don't, and as long as the cheesiness of the Pym's abilities are noticed and made clear by the other characters, this movie's cultural relevance won't be compromised, especially if they use their "hokey" abilities effectively, ultimately saving the lives of the skeptical characters who doubted them.

I'm really worried that this "modern" feel that Whedon's going for with The Avengers is going to end up being meat-head porn. They took out two of the most human characters in The Avengers (Hank and Janet) and replaced them with the two characters most likely to attract fourteen-year-old boys (Scarlett Johansson in a immodest, leather jumpsuit and the guy from The Hurt Locker with a bow). It's disappointing. I wanted to finally see another Marvel superhero movie that was actually a compelling film.

Fonzie, I get what you are saying and yes the Pyms do have a great human element about them, which is why I said if they are going to introduce him ( or tem ) then lets have them as Hank and Janet. I don't think we have to see them as their alter egos. My main concern is that although the main characters have or will have their own movies out by the time Avengers hits the screens so they will be established, they still have to find a way to intergrate Hawkeye into this movie and make him a valid character to the main movie going audience, which isn't going to consist solely of fans of the characters already. This will take up valuable screen time and if they are going to introduce possibly to more ( Hank and Janet ) then that will damage ( in my opinion ) the interaction for the other more established characters. Renner has already said that their is a going to be a relationship story for him and Scarlett, I am sure there will be focus on Iron Man and captain America, both leaders in their own way and then they all have to get to grips with a Thunder god in their midst aswell as the Hulk issue. I am not against antman or the wasp per se, I just don't want them to jam characters in for the sake of it at the cost of a decent storyline. If that makes sense.

There's always other people. Maybe Ant-Man will be played by someone that surprises us and be the character. I never thought Downey Jr. would be Tony Stark and he owned the role. People should accept that Fillion won't be part of the Avengers and maybe the Marvel universe at all.

Hank Pym should be in Avengers 1 and everybody knows
it but with Feige running the movie side of MARVEL
things are all frakked up!

AVENGERS shouldn't be a military group run by any
governmment but that's the way Marvel is making it
now!

AVENGERS are a private super security group not
bullies for SHIELD and the U.S. Government!
What a damm CROCK!!!

Janet and Hank named the AVENGERS THE AVENGERS and
were two fifths of the founding members!

This is all frakked-up and I'll never stop being disappointed!

Fillion for Yellow Jacket! Forget Ant-man he's
lame! We need a Giant-man named YJ and Janet as
Wasp! Without them there is no Ultron!

The Avengers ain't the Avengers without them!

ralphmouth I can assume you have never been on this site until this article. "All josh does is post an article from somewhere else and give his useless opinion. Quit acting like he's the one doing the interview". Every contributor on this site does this including myself. But Josh also gets some epic exclusives so shut the [frick] up and take your lack of proof and unwanted criticism to some other site. Josh has earned his keep here so you have to at least attempt to earn yours before insulting him.

oh oh oh! maybe he'll be an easter egg in the blu ray version of The Avengers?!! Yeah! You see that dot in the bottom right hand corner of the table? That's Ant-man! Now they must be making a solo movie!

PS. See article about Black Panther "easter eggs" in Iron Man 2.
